2023 Las Vegas Raiders - RIP Jack - one of the greatest Super Bowl moments ever (4 Viewers)

Ruggs gets 3-10 years.

"I have no excuse", his remorse seems legit. I hope he does "good time" and secures his release in 3. I believe he can still do good things with his time on this planet.
A horrible mistake of a young kid with lot's of sudden money. We mistakes made by professional athletes all the time... in his case, it lead to the loss of life. There was nothing in his past that would suggest this was who he is. I hope he uses this to come out better for it and make a real positive impact on the world.

I predict Ruggs will be a positive light on society upon his release at age 27. I can also see a scenario where he plays in the league again. One night of idiocy defines him now, but given his prior character, I don’t believe it will define him forever. Good luck, Henry.

After two rest days, the Las Vegas Raiders returned to the indoor practice field Wednesday, running through drills in shorts and shells. The intensity will ramp back up Thursday when the San Francisco 49ers come to HQ for the first of two joint practices between the teams

Notes and Observations from Day 11:

Offense

  • Jimmy Garoppolo really hit his stride Wednesday, connecting often with Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow throughout practice.
  • Keelan Cole Sr. made a dynamic catch on the sideline during 1-on-1 drills. He played in 14 games (three starts) in his debut season with the Raiders in 2022.
  • Second-year wideout DJ Turner saw an uptick in reps. The gadget receiver played nine games for the Raiders last season.
  • Brandon Parker saw his fair share of snaps, as he's engaged in a healthy competition at right tackle with Jermaine Eluemunor and Thayer Munford Jr.. Parker started 13 games for the Silver and Black in 2021, but didn't see action last year after suffering a season-ending injury in the Hall of Fame exhibition against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  • "Jermaine Eluemunor played really great last year. Thayer played really great as well, so in order for me to even be in the mix, I have to step my game up because they both have evolved in the following year," said Parker. "Every time I see them do it right, I'm trying to get it right up there with them because competition breeds excellence. It doesn't do anything but help us all if everyone else is getting better."

  • Defense

    • Many younger guys saw the majority of snaps on the defensive line Wednesday, including Nesta Jade Silvera, Adam Plant and third-round pick Byron Young, who had a nice batted down pass in 11-on-11 team period.
    • Neil Farrell Jr. returned to practice from the Non-Football Injury list.
    • Jordan Willis had an underrated showing at practice, in my opinion. The defensive lineman is gearing up for joint practices against a 49ers team he played for during the last three seasons.
    • The overall defense looked stout in red zone drills. Rookie linebacker Amari Burney continues to excel in coverage, making a nice play on the ball to force third down.
    • In the secondary, Sam Webb is settling in and has clearly looked more comfortable on the field throughout this year's camp. "It's a lot easier, comes a lot more second hand," Webb said of Patrick Graham's defensive scheme. "It's great right now coming in knowing the play style that we're looking for."

There may be hope in bringing my older son to the Dark Side.

He is starting up his 3rd season of football in 5th grade. Even though they want to use him in a skill position on offense (something he wasn't able to do the first two years due to size and weight limits) he still seems more excited about defense. He can play any position on defense from DT to the secondary. He just has an unusual very good blend of size, height, speed, agility and overall athleticism and one of, if not the best, conditioning on the team thanks to him being in club swim. Last year he played mostly DT on defense with some DE and even a little OLB in a 5-2 alignment (hardly ever throw at that age). I think the best spot for him to use his abilities is at DE. Plus, this year they have a couple of boys that can play DT that are a bit taller and heftier than him and they have a good amount of smaller kids with good speed.

Anyways.... the whole point of all of this is he is getting super excited about DE. in the past he has been obsessed (still is really) with speed. So, it wasn't totally shocking (though still deeply disappointing) that Tyreek Hill and thus the Chefs became his favorites. (I had him pointed towards Ruggs and his jersey number is even 11 because of that push but we all know how that ended up).

I have been talking to him about effort and always keeping the motor running. That if he doesn't give up on ANY play and goes hard until that whistle blows then he will make 1 or 2 more plays a game and in football that can be the difference of the game. I mentioned Crosby because he is probably the best example of this. He perked up and he showed more interest in Maxx so I kept chatting him up about why Maxx is so good and how exactly good he is compared to the other NFL players. I read an article on The Athletic that mentioned how Crosby runs extra sprints at practices which goes directly into what I have been trying to encourage my sons mindset to be. So, I showed him that part of the article and his face lite up like 'wow'. So then we watched highlights of Maxx in both college and the Raiders and we broke some of it down, talked about his moved, his high motor and how he is held on almost every play but still keeps going. It was a good little Dad/Son time that went on much longer than his normal attention span for watching sports stuff (he loves to play but doesn't last long watching).

Hoping that that can be something that brings him to where he belongs. The only good thing right now is that he is no longer a Chef fan after Hill was traded..... comparatively having a son that is a Fins fan is much better than a Chef fan but I have always thought my kids would follow me in being stupidly in love with the Raiders.
Now that is some top shelf parenting right there!

Maxx Crosby loves Nesta. “Since the first day, he came in with an attitude. He is hungry. He is going to be a big-time player for us.”

Found my young DT to watch
If Ziegler hits on another 7th rounder two years in a row I’ll be impressed. Looking forward to watching this player as well.

Notes and Observations from Day 12: vs 49`ers

Raiders offense

  • Jimmy Garoppolo was on fire Thursday, with a number of incompletions you could count on hand throughout the whole practice. The former 49ers quarterback was obviously still pretty familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of their defense and was able to zero in well on his new receivers.
  • "For the most part, it was the same guys I was going against last year," said Garoppolo. "Fred [Warner] running the show, the D-line is still damn good. It's a talented group, but I thought we held our own today."
  • This joint practice was a great example of how tantalizing the trio of Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers and Hunter Renfrow could be. All three receivers fared well against a stingy 49ers secondary, with Adams and Meyers making routine catches out wide and Renfrow showcasing his skills in the slot.
  • "Hunter's a dog, he's made out of the right stuff," said Garoppolo. "You go out there and starting competing in these team periods, you can see it in the huddle. ... Jakobi has been awesome. He had an hell of a day today too. He came came ready today. He's another one of those guys, like I was saying about Hunter, you can look into his eyes and know he's made out of the right [stuff]. He's ready to go."
  • Veteran Austin Hooper stepped up against the Niners, grabbing a touchdown pass from Garoppolo.
  • Running backs Ameer Abdullah, Zamir White and Sincere McCormick had productive days in the passing game, with all three making multiple catches in 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 team period.
  • Aidan O'Connell went in during the last 11-on-11 team period of practice, and was pretty precise on his throws. In the two-minute drill situation, O'Connell connected with McCormick twice, Kristian Wilkerson, DeAndre Carter and Jesper Horsted.

  • Raiders defense

    • The usual suspects turned up the heat during their 1-on-1's against the 49ers, that being Pro Bowlers Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones. Another player who was getting after it was rookie defensive tackle Nesta Jade Silvera. The 2023 seventh-round pick was able to stack another good day of practice on top of what's been an impressive camp from him.
    • "Nesta's a dog," Crosby said. "I've loved him since the first day he's came in. He's had the attitude that you can tell he's hungry. And he just getting better and better."
    • The linebacking corps fueled by Divine Deablo, Robert Spillane and Luke Masterson looked formidable. The trio made a few plays on the ball in 7-on-7 drills.
    • Amik Robertson made an impressive pass deflection in the red zone.
    • Cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Duke Shelley both came away with interceptions.

The only thing that matters is Davante's status.

Hearing McDaniels say it's not "crazy serious" didn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

The homie Hondo can't seem to say enough good things about Raider D performance last two days against the Niners. Pimpin' Silvera, Spillane and Epps, in particular.

Says Raiders won both days of practice. Yesterday was like a 20-17 type game, and today like a 28-10 type game. Interersting.

Is there any video of him getting hurt? I wonder what part of his leg was injured and what he was doing?

Yeah, doesn't that imply that it's some degree of serious? It's not crazy serious, it's just serious. Yikes

Las Vegas Raiders Marcus Peters has had a day. Peters has INTERCEPTED Brock Purdy twice. The Raider defense with 4 INTs
LFG. If this defense can show out, then this offense should be good enough to fill in the rest. Add Tyree and ROLL.

TRAINING CAMP UPDATES vs 49ers DAY 2: (via The Raiders Silver and Black FB group)
-Rookie WR Tre Tucker with a splash play. 30 yard TD on a flag route from fellow Rookie QB Aidan O’Connell.
The speed on display from the rookie.
-Raiders 2nd team offense drove down the field on the Niners 1st team defense.
-Marcus Epps with a shove to Brandon Aiyuk resulting in an unsportsmanlike. Lots of talk between the two before and after.
-LB Luke Masterson intercepts Sam Darnold. Rookie DT Nesta Jade-Silvera was a menace and disrupted that throw.
-RB Zamir White had a couple long runs. One being a TD.
-Trey Lance did well in 7-on-7s he threw a couple TDs. Trey didn’t get a chance to do anything in 11-on-11s.
-Good stuff in first round of 49ers-Raiders of 1-on-1s.
Maxx Crosby beat Yackle Colton McKivitz with a vicious inside spin move.
Jordan Willis, now with the Raiders, blasted by 49ers’ Matt Pryor — who took his first LT rep of camp. Willis gets blocked up the next play though.
-Rookie NT Nesta Jade-Silvera bringing that man strength at the point of attack. Literally walking back 49ers IOL 3-5 yards into the pocket. A good sign for a late-round pick. He’s making an impression.
-Safety Marcus Epps just snagged an interception in redzone 7-on-7.
-Next play LB Robert Spillane intercepts Purdy.
-Brock Purdy threw 4 INTs. Some are reporting only 3 but there was 4 including the 7-on-7 drills. Brock also made some good throws as well going 16-28.
-Purdy’s next throw was a slant to Chris Conley that was broken up by a Raiders Tre’Von Moehrig.
-Marcus Peters makes a diving interception off Brock Purdy, tried to hit Deebo Samuel over the middle. The receiver was well covered.
-The 49ers next three pass attempts resulted in consecutive throwaways after being pressured and a coverage sack. Facing third and 16, Purdy hit Jauan Jennings over the middle to pick up the first down.
-LB Robert Spillane Intercepts Brock Purdy for the second time today. Spillane was covering Willie Snead.
-Jimmy Garoppolo carved up the 49ers defense for the second day in a row. In three possessions Garoppolo and the Raiders starting offense came away with 2 TDs and a FG.
-The first Raiders drive saw Garoppolo hit on four of six attempts before RB Zamir White burst through the 49ers defense untouched for a score from 35 yards out.
-On the following Raiders possession, Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t miss. The quarterback hit all three throws including a five-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Carter.
-Jimmy G throws a quick slant to WR Jakobi Meyers for a red zone TD pass. That’s back-to-back touchdown drives for the Raiders Garoppolo then wrapped up his day by leading the Raiders offense into position for a 53-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson.
-In Jimmys three possessions he finished 12-18 with a couple Touchdowns.
-Marcus Peters with his 2nd INT of the day. Maxx Crosby was in the backfield causing disruption. Peters First time was in 7-on-7 redzone. This time 11-on-11. Both on Purdy.
-Duke Shelley got another interception to add to his one from yesterday. This time in was on Trey Lance both teams were running 2nd Strings.
-LB Spillane who had a Big day today also said had the chance to pick the brain of Fred Warner. Warner told him non-stop effort helps him stand out as a player.
-More positives from the Niners today compared to yesterday but again the Raider won the day. The Defense continued to show out! I counted 7 Interceptions today alone.

Reading up in various articles it seems like Crosby has really taken the leadership role in the defense and as it is often the case, that strong leadership starts to shape the group and begin to take on the leaders characteristics. It sounds like this defense has been very high energy and confident in attacking. Even more encouraging is that there has been a ton of good buzz for the young and rookie additions to the team. Nesta Jade Silvera has been turning heads and positives about the whole DT group. You get good production from that interior then this defense can be good because we know Crosby is going to be disruptive and hopefully either or both Jones and Wilson end up being somewhat in the same vicinity of making an impact.

A lot of good reports coming out of the practices with SF.

But before I get all excited for this upcoming season.... camp/pre-season is not the season. But still.... good reports are better than indifferent or bad.

he Las Vegas Raiders got their first big scare of training camp during an August 11 joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers. During the first play of team drills, star wide receiver Davante Adams got hit hard by 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward, which caused him to leave the field limping as he pointed at his calf.

He did not return to practice. Fortunately, it appears to only be a minor injury, per an August 11 tweet from Tashan Reed of The Athletic.

Jalen Carter 1st snap.

The only way to compound the Ruggs disaster? Passing on the best DT in a Henderson because "also a car thingy"

Imma be mad about this for ten years, I have no doubt
Okay, you know I was stumping for this guy right with you but... was that even a starting guard? And, let's see what Wilson brings to the table...uh when he gets healthy, which should be...uh... anytime now, right? ... Right???

###damnit! :kicksrock:

I wanted Carter as my top choice but Wilson is a nice consolation prize or should be. It kind of sucks to have your shiny new car still sitting in the garage when everyone else is test driving theirs around the neighborhood. There hasn't been any indication of something to worry about as far as his health and I have a high level of confidence that he will be an effective defender for years to come. I also think Carter will be as well. The biggest reason for wanting Carter, for me at least, was not so much that I believe Carter is a better player but that it is harder to get a top tier DT than it is a top tier DE.

I like Wilson's size a bunch. He's a giant of a human being. I'm hoping that translates to him being 1) stronger in setting the edge (something I had hope Cle could do as contain is almost as important as sacks when you are dealing with Mahomes & Herbert x 4) 2) being strong in the run game and 3) that he can slide into the middle on obvious passing downs. I want him to be a legit 3-down DE. I want to see Neil Smith or, in a perfect world, Reggie White.

But, damnit they spent the #7 pick on this guy and afaik he's not even doing position drills on the side. It's a lot of draft capital for what is feeling like a lost season.

They aren't even close as prospects.

Nothing to do with Wilson. Draft is over, he's on my team, I root for him. I love DL in general, and he's a fun prospect. I am not unhappy about the pick.

I just think for the next ten years I will be watching a monster DT, who filled our BIGGEST NEED. Nope, let's pass on him. Because Henry Ruggs.

I know, let's let the EAGLES, recent Super Bowl participants, get the best DT prospect in 10+ years. I guess the Eagles didn't get the memo, because Jerome Brown died in a car crash.

Anyone catch the protests outside Eagles headquarters, in their Jerome Brown jerseys (SAME POSITION), burning their season tickets in rage after the Eagles dared to draft a guy who drove fast?

No? That's weird, me either.

I know, too soon! Too Soon!!! My god if the Raiders took Carter, after the Ruggs thing, it would have been a PR nightmare. Pro Football Talk would have written about it for at least TWO WEEKS.

Glad we dodged that bullet.

I think it may be a little more nuanced than that but, yes Ruggs was the driver on that for sure. Then again seven other teams also had similar concerns, need and no Ruggs (okay 4 if you want to exclude Hou, Car & Ind) and still passed on him.

Two I agree that generational talents at DT are unicorns but I can easily see that a high end DE opposite Maxx may be more important in today's NFL.

In an NFL with diminished running games and QB mobility being the rule and no longer the exception, particularly in the AFC West, having two guys who can keep the QB in the pocket is a big time advantage.

I am 100% rationalizing but the nasty DT may be less important than it was 10 years ago.

🤞🙏🍸

Unpossible for team to look better after two drives.

Two sacks on SF first series, and O'Connell cruises team down the field for a TD. First catch? Tre Tucker.

AO'C looks really good. Zamir looks like a backup RB at best. Tre looks and moves the part, but the two drops are concerning.

Aside from AOC, my favorite performance was Koonce.

Maybe not the stats, but he has been a problem, from both sides. Converted speed to power, and has been so exaggerated bendy round the edge I am starting to think he might be showing off.

A designated pass rusher role is there for him. Man, I hope Tyree hits field soon.

AO'C played that half like an early career Tom Brady. Yeah, I said it. The quick (and good) decision making, the rhythm and timing, the accuracy and (decent) zip on the ball... It was one half against Niners scrubs, but you can only play the opponent in front of you. Very impressed by this guy so far. 10 of 13, but should've been 12 of 13 if Tre Tucker had better hands that half.

Tre Tucker has been lining up outside, not the slot.

That 2nd "drop" was after he completely embarrassed a guy off the line, and was wide open up the sideline. I am not unhappy with his half, at all.

Agreed. Lots of good so far from Tucker, besides the whole holding onto the ball thing, which could be nothing more than nerves in his first NFL appearance. And yes, that second catch was high difficulty, but fact is he let the ball into his forearms on the dive, rather than snatching it with his hands. Again, more good than bad, but if he makes those two catches we are talking about him in similar ways that we are O'C.

Tell you what, the guy who was the obvious reach of our class being a guy that has looked good from Day 1 is a point to Zeigler. So far, anyway.

Everyone reaches in the draft. If you do, and the guy pans out, it speaks well to your evaluation.

Been talking about the new #4 all preseason long. Love this guy.

Pre-season is pre-season but they play them for a reason... to evaluate players.

First observation.... Trey Lance is a bust. For a guy that has been in the league going into his third year, he looks like a rookie. I tried to trade Darnold to the Purdy holder earlier in one of my leagues and he responded Lance was the backup. I told him "have you seen Lance play?" I saw some reports that some teams inquired about trading for Lance and the Niners obviously didn't. Bad move, his stock is declining even more.

Now for an actual rookie QB that didn't look anything like a rookie.... The Big O'! (sorry, not going with the AOC, just seeing those initials makes my get the heebeegeebees). His accuracy was said to be his strength so it wasn't a suprise but it was nice to see it on an NFL field. Good decisions, getting the ball away quickly and he looked comfortable and in control of the offense. He even got away under pressure and got a throw off which apparently was the thing he couldn't do per draft profiles. I loved it. As I said, his strengths seem to scream what McD wants in his offensive system. The game doesn't look too much for him at all and it looks like he is picking up the offense quickly. Cut Hoyer and add him to the coaching staff. Promote The Big O' with Garbers on the PS as ready to promote when Jimmy G goes down. I am more comfortable now for that inevitable moment.

Loved what I saw from Tucker. The one catch called back was close but what I saw was that he was competent with his speed. It looks like they will try to move him around and do some gadgets for him to get some mismatch opportunities or just his hands on the ball.

Parham going down.... looked like a concussion issue to me. He looked like he got his bell rung coming off. A lot of blinking, did not seem to favor any body parts as he came up, etc.

The defense looked energized. They looked like they were more aggressive than they were last year. They got pressure on the Niner QB's with some sacks and forcing bad plays.

I liked what we saw from White. Assuming we get Jacobs back before the season (it is hard to imagine that does not happen) I would like to get White more carries in the games than he did last year... which isn't too hard of a bar to jump over. He has speed that Jacobs doesn't. He will break a long one with enough opportunity and even the shorter game, he showed he has some power. Work White in more for more than the breather snap for Jacobs. Let's keep Jacobs fresh and ready to go versus banged up and fighting through.

Overall, happy with what I saw on both sides.

Fairly unimpressed by Zamir. Dude has zero wiggle and his vision is avg at best. He also doesn't have much power until he gains steam. He does have burst and runs hard, but he is a backup NFL RB only IMO. He is a huge downgrade from Jacobs and the other backups are limited in their own ways. Annoying that the NFL thinks a guy like Jacobs or Saquan is so easily replaceable.

One more superlative about AO'Cs throws today... Notice how even on intermediate passes, they are on a *line*, yet still seem very catchable (i.e. somehow still have touch). That's not common, folks. It was night and day comparing him to the rest of the QBs that took the field in today's game, including and especially the two #3 overall draft picks playing for the Niners.

Think the fantasy community wants this guy to be something, but he seems replaceable.
