2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (6 Viewers)

That's the way I see it. Big names but what have they done in the league over the last 2-3 years. They could easily be cut and ideally we want them to be because that means the you g guys stepped up.

I expect both to make the roster, Morrow, who signed a deal with 0 guaranteed money, to be cut, and potentially one more move at the position, but probably unlikely.
Unless Bradley has really fallen out of favor or the Dean injury is more serious than they are letting on, I can't see both making the roster. Ellis and Bradley both had a heavy ST role last year and the team likes to have depth LBs that can contribute there and with the way they seem to want to use guys like Reddick and now Nolan Smith occasionally as a DE/LB hybrid, I think 4 LBs is going to be the max for the Week 1 53 (Dean, Ellis, Bradley, and one of Morrow/Jack/Cunningham, with maybe the 2 odd-men out on the PS as vet call-ups like they did with Anthony Harris and Safety last year.)

At this point we have to be at peace with the fact it will never be a position of strength for us (because of deliberate philosophy to focus on other spots) unless a draft pick like Dean turns out to be the next Bobby Wagner, or the missed shot they took with a development player like Davion Taylor pays off for once. Otherwise, we'll just have to live with a rotating mish-mash of JAG's.

They seem happy to just cycle guys at the position. Hopefully Nakobe Dean can be the next TJ Edwards where you can get 1-2 decent years and then 1 really good one out of the guy before they bring the next one in.

"Derek Barnett did not appreciate a block from Landon Dickerson, pushed him to the ground from behind after the play. Teammates came quickly to get between them."

This dude can't even make it a month without a penalty. How much longer are we going to deal with this kid?

50/50 he's on the roster when the season starts. If no penalties (haha) he is a nice 4th/5th rotational pass rusher IMO.

According to overthecap.com: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/philadelphia-eagles

Cutting Barnett only saves $58K against the cap. He'll be on the roster.

He won't be cut that's for sure. Traded? Not so sure.

this is a good point. Wasn't even thinking about how many roster spots it'd take to keep them both as depth.

Just read on Twitter: "Jalen Carter's freakish talent has reportedly already caused Eagles guards to "game plan" how to stop him in camp practices. Fletcher Cox said that 'you don't see' what Jalen Carter is doing from any other rookies."

SOTD.
And Nolan Smith apparently looks phenomenal in camp, too.
This might have been the best Eagles draft I've seen in all my years of being a fan.

Yeah, he is getting high praise from Lane Johnson who is stating he is almost unblockable at times. Very excited about him.

So happy nine other picks went off the board ahead of him. And to think, there was talk of taking Nolan Smith at 10 if Carter was gone, only to have him fall into their laps at the end of round 1.

Hope to have them as anchors on the defense for years.

Gainwell reportedly taking all the early down work over Penny (with Swift more of a receiving back).

Interesting.

I wonder if there's a chance Scott gets cut.

Doubt he gets cut. Only $132k savings. They could try to trade him. Then his full $1.2m is saved.

Interestingly, Trey Sermon saves $1.1m if he's cut. Got to think he's a real possibility.

I think right now they're just giving everyone a chance to work with the 1's. Apparently the team released a preseason depth chart per Bleeding Green Nation. Here's the RB order:

RB: Kenneth Gainwell/Rashaad Penny/Boston Scott/Trey Sermon/D’Andre Swift, Kennedy Brooks

Somehow I doubt it stays this way. FYI, this is the only one I've seen. Don't know how accurate BGN is. ETA: looking closer, it almost seems like they're lumping KG, RP, BS, TS, and DS together and they're all above Brooks.

Another player that needs to really show his worth is Quez. If they think he's not worth the roster spot, they save $2.7m on the cap cutting him.
Apparently he's stepped up huge this offseason and looks fantastic as the 3.
2nd this. I have heard and read from multiple sources that he is having a very good camp. Also that O.Z. hasn't really stood out all that much.

I saw on Twitter that he’s taking 3rd team snaps and unsurprisingly dominating as a result. TBH there has been less buzz about his TC performance than expected.

Unless howie can work his magic and trade him

Barnett has the lowest IQ of any football player I've seen or met play. I mean in a football sense. This guy routinely doesn't know where to line up and makes stupid decision on the field that cost the team at times. Probably if he was healthy he'd have cost us a SB berth last year. I don't know what happened with Watkins. If you can find a taker and trade them for draft comp by the end of preseason you do it. Get what you can for both and run. A draft pick is better then nothing and could be used in a future trade for a player or pick later that could be better.

Eagles have always been weird with their depth charts. I suspect Penny is the main guy with Swift and Kenny G playing recieving roles. I could see situation where Gainwell Smith are in the game with Penny and one of those guys is split wide to create match ups. Theres been some reports of them doing this already in practice. Also in Philly there is no RB1. the three are like RB1 A, B and C. They;ll all play. Fantasy wise its a nighmare but it works for the Eagles. Like Phillip Rivers once said to someone when the didn't get Keenan Allen the ball enough "We don't give an F about your fantasy team. I'm trying to win a football game and do my job."

This is kinda how I thought it would be before training camp opened, and it may play out that way over the course of the season. However we are talking about the Eagles so the lead back will most likely change week to week based on match ups and hot hands and such.

show me some stuff in some real games quez

Can't believe the Ravens have won 23 straight pre-season games. That's bonkers when you consider that they're basically coin flips.

Let's see if we break their streak tonight :P

Also penny got alot of runs. Rbs that are a huge part of the plan don't tend to get that many carries in preseason game 1. Thinking it might be mostly Swift and gainwell......

Yeah, no doubt. Sermon in there after Penny. One thing I thought was that if you're a running back and you're watching this, aren't you really hesitant to sign there? I mean, Penny surely had suitors with his end to last year. Guy isn't cooked in the least. Advanced metrics had him wayyy at the top of running backs last year when he was able to play.

You just wonder if the organizations that keep treating these guys as interchangeable and disposable don't get a little pushback from the players themselves. And I'm not talking just in terms of contract but in terms of even giving the organization the time of day when it comes to interest.

Injury concerns prevented him from getting a long term deal. Sign with a great offense. He saw what Miles did last year. He's banking on staying healthy and getting that for himself. Will it happen? Who knows.

Sign with a great offense

If I'm a player, that's not enough given how they rotate backs. They're sort of like New England. If I'm an agent, I don't let my guy sign a "prove it" deal there, because you don't get enough playing time or run to "prove it" to anybody. This isn't just about Philadelphia. I think guys are going to look around the league, figure out which teams are the most mercenary-like in their dealings with players, and sign elsewhere.

Penny could have gotten more money somewhere if he signed for only a year. I'm almost sure of it. What's weird is once these guys get lost in the RB shuffle, they're lost and out of the league before they know it. Penny might have signed his own retirement papers when he inked this deal. Rather than proving anything, he might have submarined his own career.

He also signed before they traded for Swift.

Impressive showing by the Eagles ‘23 draft class, particularly Carter, Brown, McKee and Ojomo. Steen and Ringo are clearly talented but need work. Smith had one real nice speed rush but other than that was not very noticeable.

Watched the game off and on. Biggest take away is I have a man crush on Sidney Brown. Didn’t see a ton of his pass coverage but that guy is a dart flying in from the secondary in run coverage, loved seeing that

Also I don't know who Tyrie Cleveland is but he looks pretty good. Running good routes and catching everything catchable.
Former UF WR he has special teams experience as a return guy. Has speed to be a deep guy. If they wanted to replace Quiz’s deep speed he’d be a guy to look at in the cheap category

And mckee is already better than book
Might be better than Marriota too. Looking forward to the next pre-season game to see some more
Source told me the other day he might have the best deep ball on the team. I went to the camp practice as a guest of my cousin for the prep seniors and McKee is impressive size wise. Moves well for his size. Gut feeling he’s gonna be out next Nick Foles type. Fanbase media falls in love with back up QB wise.

Ian Book looking impressive.

Or McKee rather.
What little I saw last night Ian Book looks like he shouldn’t be playing football. Last drive had a wide open guy and decided to run.
I think it is hard to judge him too much. Baltimore was running 6 guys blitzing or more from all angles and the 3rd string OL was getting beat up a bit. It’s like Baltimore wanted to win the game more than actually use it as a pre-season game

Every time he dropped back he ran before going through any progressions. It was like the reverse version of when the Linc was chanting run the ball. Congrats Mr Book for being one of the worst Eagles preseason QBs in my 45+ years of observing.
