2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (8 Viewers)

Of course this is all predicated on the supposition that the holes on this team are fixable. If they can't right the ship on both sides of the ball, then this is all for not. I'm still optimistic.
I thought it was fixable after the SF debacle. I still expected them to lose this game...but to get blown out again? Might not be fixable in-season.
Totally. It might not be fixable. To be fair, if you clean up the turnovers, this is a different game. It seemed like every time we were finally driving and getting something going on offense, we'd fumble. And its everyone. Jalen, AJ, Davonte all had fumbles on big gain plays. Its back breaking.

Hurts only targeted AJ Brown, Smith and Goedert all night. That's ****ing ridiculous.

From your lips to God's ears. I'm honestly not convinced this is the case-at least on defense. Our LBer's are sub-par, secondary is old and it shows and the D-line-which is supposed to be a strength-isn't getting anywhere near the pressure they should. Run defense used to be great, now its marginal. We have the worst third down defense in the league. Thats not hyperbole. We're ranked 32nd. Its just really bad.

Thinking about that game this morning, you have to think that fatigue is setting in on this team. How many times do you think you see both AJ Brown and Devontae Smith not catch passes and drop balls that hit their hands? How many times do you think they give up those fumbles. And the defense, if i had the time to watch the first half of the season and compare to these last 2 games, I think one of the biggest factors that is different is the tackling, and more specifically gang tackling.

This Seattle game has become much more important than originally thought.

I think as of week 7 they were the 7th ranked defense in the league. Playing Dak, Mahones, Josh Allen, Purdy, then Dak again I think would have any defense in the league looking much worse then they have.

Who has a comparable stretch like that? I know Dallas has a close one coming up, but pulling the numbers from those 5 games vs. the first 8, I am sure there is a difference with the defense, more so than the offense.

stop with the doom and gloom guys. That was a BRUTAL stretch. Losing to a well rested SF team and on the road to a well rested Dallas team, no matter what the scores were, isn't the end of the world. This team still has the talent to go deep in the playoffs. The offense today moved the ball well but had three not so characteristic turnovers. The defense looked lost in the first half but played much better in the second.

Now we have an extra day to prepare for Seattle, who quite frankly isn't built to move the ball like the last SIX teams in a row have been. We've faced SIX TOP OFFENSES in a row, and won four of them. Of course the defense looks gassed.

Eagles will win out and win the East. It's unfortunate that they no longer hold control of the top seed, but SF could slip and give it back. If they don't, ok then...Eagles can still capture the 2 seed and be ok.

THIS TEAM IS STILL VERY VERY GOOD.
Agreed. Would have liked to see us fare better the last 2 weeks though. I think we are still a top 5 team, but not a top 3 team.

Bring on the 2 seed. I think we go 3-1 in the final 4 games, which means Dallas has to WIN OUT (@BillS, @ Dolphins, vs Lions, @ Washington)... really don't see that happening. Means SF has to play Dallas for their first playoff game. Luckily only one of them can move on.

Cowboys are playing well right now, but they will NOT win all 4 games. We lost the division with the Arizona loss.

You will win the East.

Yeah that’s fair, we haven’t played a subpar offense in what feels like 2 months.

To be honest our offense has looked pretty bad too though. 6 points last night, 19 last week. Not gonna keep up with Dallas or SF when your defense can’t defend and your offense can’t score TDs.

I know the titles are just fun but no way is there a "collapse"

Yes, Eagles look to be 3rd best in NFC.

But hard to imagine an easier path to win out as no team in the league has a softer schedule to finish than Eagles. No team has a cushier path to 4 wins to close out.

They don’t face a team with a winning record the rest of the way. (Opponents combined record is 17-33).

Including Arizona and Giants twice.
Had the toughest strength of schedule from last year's teams. Kind of an earned benefit with the brutal stretch of games for the Eagles to face in a row, with the 2 toughest games having each opponent on 10 days rest. I appreciate you reminding us Eagles fans about when the schedule is easy though haha.

 the last four weeks are cupcake easy but I'm looking at the whole year. Projecting by last year's wins, it was a tough schedule. But it's much more realistic to look at Las Vegas odds and projected wins. In the more realistic view, they had the 10th easiest schedule. https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/2023-nfl-strength-of-schedule/

It's not the losses that have me doubting. 10-3 is a great record, and the murderer's row of games they just finished was a buzzsaw.

I'm not even surprised they lost to SF and DAL both. I had reservations about both games because of the way both of them are playing.

What gets me is THE WAY they lost those 2 games. They have no identity; they squeaked out wins against bad teams and overrated teams that have the same glaring issues as they have.

Outside of the Dline, their Defense is so atrocious they have no shot at going deep in the playoffs, unless things change drastically. They are going to look like they are "getting right" for the next 4 weeks, although I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the game in Seattle. But the narrative will be: "They were just gassed from the schedule" or "Every team has a stretch of bad games".

But, in the playoffs, I see them losing to the good/decent teams. SF and DAL are out of their weight class. DET, LAR, GBP- I can see any of those teams giving us fits. The back 7 of this Defense is just not a playoff caliber Defense.

I will say nothing is easy about traveling all the way to another coast and winning on the road. And Sharp Football and Vegas Odds are literally a compilation of people's opinions. Even on the website its says its based off of "projected win totals" but that's fine by me if people want to believe we are still living off an easy schedule. NFL changes every week with injuries and how good teams are, and I'm pretty sure this site doesn't take into account how well rested teams are vs their opponents, etc. We were a 1st place team, got a first place schedule. Are 10-3 thru 13 games even after losing 2 in a row, and we beat a lot of good teams along the way. Still got a chance to handle business.

Now being realistic about the TEAM, we just look gassed and tired. Not to mention poorly coached (bad tackling, bad offensive playcalling) and keep turning the ball over WAY TOO much. I see this team not making much noise in the playoffs as is.

Losing to SF and Dallas is acceptable, the way they played and coached is not. They’ve been dodging bullets all year. This is an 8-5 team with a 10-3 record.
Yup this is how I see it. It’s sort of what banker guy said weeks ago. They don’t pass the eye test to me. Last year they looked like the most complete team in all of football pretty much the entire year. They should have won that superbowl (and probably would have won it 6 out of 10). They look off this year on both sides. Maybe it’s a combination of fatigue and age catching up? No doubt they have had a brutal schedule.

Say what you want about game getting out of hand and what not but again, 7 RB carries in the first half. 2 of which came with under 20 seconds to go. Seriously WTF are we doing? We are 100% predictable. Anything we get on offense is on sheer talent of AJ, Devonta, Goederrt and hurts. Nothing is being schemed open. The game plan seems to be token run, then 10 straight passes with routes 10+ yards down the field. I do not get it.

This is my issue as well. Overall we are 10-3, the world isn’t ending losing to good teams at the end of a brutal stretch with less rest than your opponents. The play calling though has to be near worst in the league. End of the first half they could have run clock to ensure they had the last drive for example. Drive stalls on horrible play calls, settle for FG, then end up giving up another TD. Maybe Johnson grows into his role and becomes good, but it’s time to learn from mistakes and not keep repeating them.

I can see that. Fortunately, rest will help if being gassed is the problem. Not sure coaching can be fixed in that time. That seems to me the most serious problem.

I still expect them to go deep into the playoffs.

Last week there were short plays to be had, and Hurts didn't see them, and held onto the ball too long. But yea - run the ball, use motion, get some screens and quick hitters. Whatever they're doing these past two weeks isnt working.

I posted earlier that there’s an argument that the 2 seed is an easier path to the Super Bowl as you’d be hosting the lowest seed in week 1 (Packers if it was today) and then hosting the winner of Lions-Vikings. This would mean also that Dallas and SF would beat each other up before we’d go to SF or host Dallas in the NFCCG.

You miss out on the bye but with the 1 seed you’d almost certainly have to face SF AND Dallas again.
Is that really how it works? I thought it readjusted so 2 seed would face the higher seed still in it ?

Correct, so where 's wrong is saying the 2 seed would host the winner of Lions-Vikings; they'd host the Lions if they won, but if the Vikings won that first game then the 2 seed would get the winner of TB-DAL instead.

yep. They don't travel well to Seattle, but think they should still win that game. And if they are a legit contender (which I believe they are) they should handle their business in the last three weeks. Finish the season at 14-3, which is a game better than I had them pre-season.

Cowboys almost certainly drop a game over the next four (@BillS, @Miami, Lions, @Washington) and even if they don't we'd still be in command of the NFCE.

Niners *probably* win out, but I could obviously see a scenario where they lose one to Baltimore, which would jump us back to the 1 seed.

Of course this is all predicated on the supposition that the holes on this team are fixable. If they can't right the ship on both sides of the ball, then this is all for not. I'm still optimistic.
Defense will still be weak for a contender, but getting back to how they held up for the first 10 games will put them back into the conversation.

Everyone thinks we are just gonna roll over the teams left on the schedule. With the way they are playing they can't beat anyone. Let alone 4 in a row

I will say that moving the game to Monday will inadvertently give the players an extra day of rest finally. Lord knows they looked gassed the last 2 weeks.

No, I expect the Seahawks to keep it competitive. Giants COULD keep it that way in NY....but probably won't. And there's always the luck factor, such as how the Jets got four turnovers, three of which were kind of bizarre and lucky (the pass off Goedert's knee that bounced up for an easy pick anyone?)

That said, Eagles will be favored in all four. I think they'll run the table, but don't expect them to lose more then one of them

I feel the same. As much as I feel like s*** today and all the S*** I talked to the Cowboys fans I know IRL, I'm just expecting us to finally win in Seattle. The pass rush and the defensive calls need to wake TF up though if we want to have a chance at anything in the playoffs.

Defense is a turnstile and offense has no confidence, whether it's the coaching, the players, or both. Maybe the "cupcakes" left on their schedule help them both get back on track, but it's just as likely they go from 10-1 controlling their own destiny for a 1-seed and the division to a 5 seed playing on the road in the WC round. That would be a pretty big fall and among the worst in team history. And if I'm in the NFL writer's room, I would punch up the script to include a devasting injury in W17 @ MetLife that happens only because we had to play the starters to still have a chance at the division because we also drop 1 of these next 3.

I generally agree, but regarding the bolded, I'd be shocked if that happens. They'd have to lose another game-probably to Seattle-and Dallas would have to sweep @BillS, @dolphins, Washington and Lions.

To be clear, I wouldn't be shocked if they lose to Seattle-I had them losing this game in the preseason prediction challenge. I'd be shocked if they lost that game AND Dallas swept the last four games. If Dallas loses one of those games, and we lost to Seattle, we'd still retain the #2.

I'm with ya here. I don't see Dallas winning all 3 games against the 3 winning teams they face next, including the 2 toughest being on the road in Buffalo and in Miami.

There is time to get some things right, but man I feel down and out today. A win in Seattle will do a lot to get me feeling better, but lol if its another 10 point halftime deficit to get there I might not see the end of the game b/c my tv will be in pieces.

Can't believe the offense only scored 6 pts
ugh. but then AJ and Davante both had drops that should have been scores and Hurts' fumble was in the redzone so that's a lot of points left on the field. I'm going with the "tired" narrative and that makes me feel a little better about the playoffs fun.

if we go with that narrative, we're also better positioned for the playoffs with the tougest part of the schedule behind us vs Dallas which is starting a stretch now into the end of the season. that defense played great, but we found enough holes we should have been able to take advantage of. just didn't go our way like the last match in Philly. we get an extra day of rest this week to regroup, on to MNF.

Hope Blankenship clears protocol quickly, that hit was vicious to the side of his head.

We look stinky across the board. Refs were poor this game. Dallas smoked us.

We need to get the defense on track for the playoffs. We need to get the play calling on track for the playoffs (kick the FG Nick!!).

All that said, Im not afraid of Dal in the playoffs. Im afraid of SF and (hopefully) Mia.

We can run the ball if we want to. Had we came out and ran the ball to open the game last night, I feel the narrative would have been different. Keeps the defense on the sideline (who is gassed), run blocking is more fun for the O lineman, keeps the WR's more juiced instead of running more routes, keeps the defense for the opposition honest, etc.

But we did not do any of this. We showed we could coming out in the 2nd half but it was far too late at that point. And we are definitely tired/gassed/what have you.

Gotta fix this s*** quick.

Before the last 2 weeks there was this lame drumbeat of "The Refs love Philly" to the point opposing fans were posting the names of refs like a criminal facing 4 felonies in different districts across the country posting the names of judges/family members and potential witnesses.

To a degree I am glad that narrative is killed. The refs just suck. I don't think anyone really wants to see 25 flags a game, just makes the whole game as a whole/the sport, just annoying to watch.

I would say refs have loved the Eagles most games. This Dal game was sooo one sided.

Crow: That said - the ref's didnt decide the outcome of this game. The Cowgirls smoked us.

yes. Yes I would be shocked if they lose to Seattle and one of the NYG or Arizona.

What does the bolded mean? The way the pendulum of random refs calls have favored the Eagles in some sort of odds way where just we have benefited from it

or

There is some conspiracy with the refs to deliberately throw games toward the Eagles and thus "this issue should be looked into"

Its just funny to me bc there always seems to be some sort of explanation other than "They are good" to why the Eagles the last 2 seasons have been overall pretty successful.

And we are going into "weird" territory to kind of explain it away at this point IMO.

Yep. The calls turned momentum but we still couldn't get stops when we needed it.

Both coordinators seem like busts. not sure which one I dislike more
For me is Brian Johnson and its not close. Has had a healthy offense all season.

On Defense, we have had so many musical chairs its insane, not to mention the age and regression of Slay and Bradberry. We have tried to bandaid it a little, but the organizational philosophy of overspending on Pass rush/DL and throwing a nickel worth of cap room at the LBs is really catching up to us.

Desai is not blitzing enough. He's betting on the 4 to get there and they hardly ever do.

Yeah you might want to check the numbers of teams' success against us when we actually do blitz and tell me if you want more of that.

I cant remember a single Eagles game this season where I was annoyed at the refs. I do recall thinking "huh, we got that one"
