2024-25 NBA Thread: Steve Kerr was right all along (22 Viewers)

Does anyone understand the cap rules around trades now? I've read that since the Wolves are into the second apron they can't aggregate salaries this year, meaning the whole Randle + DDV package is irrelevant. I've also read that they aren't under those penalties until the offseason, meaning they could package salaries together. So confused.
NBA unintentionally killed the trade market with all these new apron rules.

There are so many teams above the level where they can’t take more salary back then they send out is going to make lots of trades impossible. Any third party teams with space to take on salary are going to make out huge this deadline.

So Jimmy Butler wants to be traded. He wants to go to either

1. Dallas - would have to give up both Gafford and Washington to make the money work (I'm assuming they don't want to trade kyrie).

2. Houston - They have a lot of Nets picks, promising prospects, and a few big enough contracts to make it work. They could do it by trading Brooks, Jeff Green, and Jock Londale along with a lesser prospect (Whitmore or Eason). They also have Steven Adams at $12m expiring. Lots of ways to make it work without much long term impact to Houston if they want to upgrade from Brooks to Butler.

3. Golden State - Have pretty much all their own picks, but would have to include either Wiggins or Draymond along with Payton and Melton.

Basically this works for Houston if this is where they want o shoot their shot. They have the ammo in terms of picks, prospects, and big contracts. I don't know that I would do it for Butler, I'd probably wait for the next guy, whomever that might be.

What about a straight up trade of Kawhi for Butler?

Denver media has been talking about MPJ + Nnaji but that would murder their already awful three point shooting.

What about a Minnesota return? Randle and DiVincenzo for Butler might make both teams better.

OKC has the ******** assets to make it work even if Miami doesn't really want the matching salary - Hartenstein and Wiggins plus like three mediocre 1sts works. Miami could flip Hartenstein for positive value elsewhere (make it a three team trade to LAL or Memphis or even hold him for the offseason).
Those are terrible deals for Miami. Hartenstein is perfect for OKC but how much sense does he make to any other team on a $30m/yr deal?

Would be shocked if OKC rocks the boat in this fashion.

Thunder have more steals than turnovers, is that good? Between Dort, Caruso, and Cason Wallace they are an absolute nightmare to play against for wings.

I think GS makes the most sense. Give up Kuminga, some salary and picks?

I don't think HOU is going to have any interest. I have a feeling Riley is going to demand Amen and that's just not happening.

If you’re in the second apron (over $189 million) in total salaries, you cannot aggregate salaries in a trade. I believe that Minnesota has the possibility of getting out of the second apron after the season of Randle opts out, as they are currently $17 million into the second apron. Maybe they could get there if Reid opts out, as he and NAW and ingles coming off the books would be about $21 million. At the point, they could aggregate salaries because they would be out of the second apron.

The other three teams currently in the second apron are Phoenix, Boston and Milwaukee.

generally in favor but this Rockets court is an atrocity
The red courts are just too much. I did lke the Knicks' court tonight though.

Also, the Rockets need to quit screwing around. Can't let the Warriors stay within single digits or they will find a way.

I haven't watched any Rockets games this year until tonight.

I kinda like Sengun, but man is he weak in the paint. Every time he tries to post or drive he either turns it over, gets blocked or barely gets the ball to the rim. Dude needs to spend some time in the weight room.

Those is painful to say, but the Warriors did have a few bad calls go against them in the 4th.

ETA: looks like Kerr agrees with me

Yeah, he's a finesse guy but he's got a lot stronger and tougher this year. Last night was probably the best defense I've seen against him lately Green and the Warriors were all over him but I thought he handled it pretty well. The rest of the team wasn't helping him out with their pathetic outside shooting.

Er, Kerr operates out of the Phil Jackson playbook. Has a dynasty that usually gets the calls, but when one doesn't go his way, cries and acts like it's the crime of the century. Yawn.

i know i am old and falling apart but i have a hard time tracking the ball even on my relative to me big tv in the living room with these fancy lookin courts same reason i cant watch a boise state football game its just too much take that to the bank brohans

Well one super annoying (unintended?) consequence of the NBA Cup is that Dallas loses a home game. 42 road and 40 home now. Which sucks. Because I'm getting refunded face value for a game that A) is an opponent and date I'd go to or B) would sell for 4-5x face value on secondary.

So that sucks.

My fellow nerds and I will just retire to the nerdery with our calculators

The Wizards have to be at the bottom of the league at the end of quarters, and every other minute of the game obviously. I wish I knew how many times I've seen them holding for the last shot, turn the ball over without getting a shot off, and then their opponent scores on the last shot of the quarter.

Embiid just cracks me up. Dude takes an incidental hand to the side of the face and he's done for the night. I take a harder hit in my Sunday morning men's league and keep playing at least once a month. And I'm 41 years old.

Dude is absolutely stealing money out there.

Edit: apparently he has a "sinus fracture".

He took a pretty good shot there with a forearm coming down right across his face.

Dude does seem to be very injury prone.

Unless they are playing the Nuggets....

So explaining the NBA Cup to Little Woz has proven difficult.

Little Woz: “Daddy, this is the playoffs?”
Me: Yes.
Little Woz (who is cheering for the Bucks bc their logo kind of looks like the Wolves’): The Bucks are going to win the championship!
Me: Well, no… this is a mid-season playoff.

Little Woz looks at me like I have three heads.

True, why can’t the guy just play with a broken face?

Also if there were harder hits than that in a typical Sunday morning league there would be punches thrown.

Nets deal Schroeder and a 2d to GS for Milton and 3 2ds....was hoping for a 1st but that would be too much for a journeyman PG. He played really well but Marks wisely dealt him as he was impeding the tank.
I bet they could have gotten a first if they had really held out for one but it was more important to get the tank going

I dunno. I can't imagine anyone signing up for the Schroder contract year experience at the expense of a first

any chance of a 1st they would have to wait until deadline - couldnt risk more wins - unlike the Jets they know how to tank!
