2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (5 Viewers)

• Coach X is known for being grumpy and introverted, two traits that don’t often go hand in hand with wooing recruits, glad-handing donors and giving motivational talks to 18- to 22-year-olds.
This.

Personally, I think Belichek has a very dry sense of humor. Unfortunately that, along with the above, ain't gonna work with the youth or boosters.

I'm sure there are tons of examples of successful college and pro coaches who are "grumpy and introverted" and many others who are cheerleader / players coaches as well. My feeling is the author formed an opinion and then back-filled in support with these bullet points. I'm kind of interested now but doubt I'll be watching when UNC kicks off its season next fall anyway.

I feel like his child-bride of a lady friend has tried to get him to loosen up and relate to people closer to her age but when he does, it comes across so cringey.

No question Mandel had an opinion and worked hard to back it. This is a great observation of a writer I really respect and read religiously but he comes across as a guy with an axe to grind.

But I do disagree with Cletius a bit - I'm for sure going to tune in to UNC football week zero or whenever they first play. I am intrigued for sure.

Regardless of the changes we've seen, today, programs are built on recruiting and motivation. This guy's never had to do either one. NFL dudes are there for their livelihood. If they aren't motivated, they are an after thought pretty quickly. I just can't see how this works. Just like it doesn't work when college guys go to the NFL and try their shtick there. Goes both ways. Only two dudes have had success at both in my lifetime and they are Carroll and Harbaugh, only Harbaugh hasn't won a SB yet.

Jimmy Johnson was successful too......Barry Switzer, sort of.
Both WELL before my time
I mean it doesn't work except for the guys it does...Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh...those feel more contemporary?
Dunno honestly. It stands to reason Harbaugh would be successful in both. He gets the players and is able to meet them where they're at. Carroll seems the exact same way. All these others, thus far, seem to be stuck in "their way" of things and rarely is that conducive to both very different environments.

Potential scenario ... Army or Navy go 11-1 in regular season w only losses to ND. But they beat 2-3 top 25 teams along the way. Or maybe they beat ND but drop another game. So maybe one of them is ranked #10 or so. They get in as the last team of the top 12. Then they lose this game after the top 12 are announced. I guess it's meaningless? Or do they postpone the announcement until after the A/N game.

This game does not factor into the playoff rankings and decisions because of when it's played.

Had they both made the AAC championship, they would have played last weekend in that game and still played this game today.

F'n refs now getting involved in the Army Navy game. Nessler said it best, just stay out of this one. I mean, a flag for spiking the football on a TD, in the vicinity of an opposing player drew a flag.

Just hope that doesn't come into play, SO much on the line for these "kids", never want that to be a part. And if there are two teams where you really don't need to be tossing flags around, it's these.

Last thing we need is an unregulated military.

Stuart Mandel blasted the hire and I generally agree with Stu on most things but....
Man, he had both guns blazing in that piece. He's never been afraid to share his opinion, but I don't think I've ever seen him be that pointed for that long.

I know....I started reading it yesterday and was taken aback at his pointed criticism on this one. He went off!
Picturing you at BWW reading the printout…..

I can't even watch him on the Manning Cast. I have no idea how he will manage with the youngsters he isn't dating.

FCS bracket remains straight chalk. The semifinals next weekend are Montana St. (1) v South Dakota (4) in Bozeman and N. Dakota St. (2) v S. Dakota St. (3) at the Fargodome.

Good run for UC Davis, was pulling for them (my daughter goes there).

My nephew played at SDakota and was at the game. UC Davis was in it up until the late Coyote TD. Great game. Next weekend is going to be awesome. Bozeman could be a snowbowl. All four of these teams finished 8-0 at home so I'm sure Montana and NDSU are favorites.

One of the Davis RBs is the same year as my kid and they went to high school together so I first watched him play like 7 years ago. Wasn't able to watch the game yesterday, but just checked the box score and he had 111 total yards and a TD. Nice game, Matteo!

Cool that Davis is moving up to the Mtn West for everything else, good step forward for them. Football is left behind as they would need to put more resources into that, would need some donors to step up big time in the next few years.

Being from Montana, it seems weird the stranglehold the Dakotas and Montana have on FCS sports.

It's uncanny and I've no explanation for it. It is really NDSU and SDSU who've dominated the last 10 years or so. SDSU has won the past three and NDSU won 8 of the ten seasons before that. In the last 13 seasons, one of SDSU or NDSU has been in the final every year except one. That streak is guaranteed to continue again this year. Montana or Montana St. have also been in the mix pretty regularly. I've no idea why schools from outside that upper western mid-west region haven't been as competitive in the past 10-15 years. These are D 1 schools and I know they recruit nationwide. I think maybe the kids who don't get interest from FBS schools maybe just prefer to stay near home. My nephew seems to have loved his experience at SDakota. He never complained to me about it although I've heard its not easy being a black man in Vermillion. Its not big city life at most of these schools. But he got a completely free ride for all 4 years and is now doing fantastic. He still has strong ties to the coaches and the team, goes to games and gets tickets, access, etc. as much as he wants.

Looks like Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State could all have snow this weekend. Fun.
And then there's Texas - sunny, 60s and in a dome :lmao:

Its in UT's stadium, no?
It is....I had Jerry World on my mind whenever I hear Tx Stadium. But still, Clemson lucked out not having to travel north.

Do you......do you know where the city of Austin is in relation to Dallas/Fort Worth?

Most of the competition in the East moved up to the big boys bracket. Not sure how wise that was/is for teams. Seems like it would be better stay in the lower division to fill your stadium and get a big pay day sacrificing yourself to Alabama on the road.

Nope. Texas is one big blob to me :lmao:

This seems like great news for the FCS: The Ivy League has agreed to participate in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs, starting with the 2025 season

Mateer committed to OU, would have been an abject disaster had he gone elsewhere. Just a horrible time to be a Wazzu fan, this has to suck so bad for them.

Wazzou and Oregon State basically got relegated and treated like discarded trash. It's awful. This will have long lasting ramifications that will impact everything from enrollment to support to sustainability. These are tiny dots of towns with nothing around them. Football provided an escape and at times, hope and cheer. Think back to Wazzou pulverizing Oregon a few years ago when Game Day was there. THE TOWN OF PULLMAN RAN OUT OF BEER!!!!

Those days are gone and they aren't ever coming back. It's beyond depressing.

I really think we’re gonna get back to a more logical setup that is based on geography eventually. This bubble will pop.

Even still, it would take those two schools years to recover from what is and will happen to them. Give me revenue sharing, salary cap, 8 team conferences, and a governing board setting non-conference schedules please. Give the players contracts and pay the hell out of them. Just end this portal nonsense.

I don't know, man. Historically, it takes college programs lifetimes to recover from death blows like this. Washington State just lost their entire coaching staff and their QB. What's going to lure players and coaches there?

Have you ever been to Pullman? Doubtful many here have. I might be 1 of 3 tops. It's remote, man. The biggest city close by is Spokane and that's 90 minutes by car. There's no major donor here - no Phil Knights or T. Boone Pickens. It's farmers, ranchers and salt of the earth people who are very careful with their money. They have to be.

They used to stack rosters with JuCo kids, cast offs and guys with very questionable character. But they had dynamic coaches and played in the Pac10/12. That's gone. Jake Diekert just left for Wake Forest, which would have been unfathomable 3 years ago. And he was a right place, right time kind of guy who took over for a coach who refused to get vaccinated.

I don't know who they hire. I don't know how they recruit. I don't know how they retain players. I don't know how they keep season ticket holders. What are they even selling for the future?

Remind me why they can't just join the MWC?

I think the plan is that some of the MWC schools and other mid-tiers are going to reform the Pac10/12 but regardless, this is relegation for both Washington State and Oregon State and it sucks. They got ditched.

Yeah, this whole college football thing is a joke now. Heck, even pro sports.

I've ranted on here about this before but there simply isn't enough money for these greedy sacks. Let's uproot everything good about college football because more money, and more money, and more money.

And what the NFL did to Chargers and Broncos fans for tonight's game is despicable. For what - WE WANT MORE MONEY!!!!!!!!

Screw it all at this point.
