Yeah. That's definitely more important to the NFL than giving a damn about their fans.

Look, I know why they did it. It's just wrong.

And it was a rare misstep for the national football league. And no, I'm not referring to the fact that they've screwed over fans that wanted to attend a game in person. That ceased to matter a long, long time ago. I think I'd rather be between a mama bear and her cubs than between the nfl and a dollar. It won't be long before they're playing games in Qatar or Saudi Arabia.

But I digress. The real misstep by the league was agreeing to Amazon's request for the ability to flex games before the current contract was up. They really should have waited until the next round of negotiations and used that as a means of extracting more cash for the product.

So yeah, the nfl doesn't give a damn about fans, but if it's any consolation they don't give a damn about players either. 3 games in 10 days for 4 teams, including the defending super bowl champs? Only if there's a spare nickel to pick up. Otherwise they care deeply about player safety. At least a little more than the wwe does. So there's that.

Well......Amazon did give the NFL quite a BIT of money to host TNF and are paying their talent handsomely. I don't like it either but were I Amazon, I'd do the same. They made the deal with the ability to flex games. It's not a surprise, but it does suck for fans who had plans.

Ohio State is going to struggle with the Tennessee front, but I think they're the more talented team and I think are capable of winning it all. I don't feel that way about the Vols.

Penn State gets a JV team. Should outclass SMU with size, pedigree and talent.

Texas will clobber Clemson.

I believe Notre Dame will handle Indiana. Neither played a really hard schedule but ND at home with momentum should take care of business.

Buddy......it's quite a stretch to think that because the new playoff format is "bloated" that it is comprised entirely of teams that "suck". Other than SMU, of course.

Texas does not suck. Ohio State does not suck. This isn't Twitter. It's not the Ticket Text line. I can appreciate scorching hot sports' takes but you're trying way too hard and are going to look awfully silly if SMU gets drubbed by a team you think "sucks".

Of course these players have no loyalty or real connection to their school, and are likely realizing they'll never have more leverage than they have right now. It's actually insane how wild West this all is. Idiotic that they can't come up with cleaner rules and such. Some obvious options for tweaks:

1. Start the season a couple weeks earlier. CFP should wrap by end of yearl And aign your idiotic transfer rules and stuff to the semesters better.

2. Or, transfer and just stay with the team. Who cares. It's obviously not about school. And you can miss one week of class at the start of the semester, get the materials online, and still transfer from Ohio State to Auburn but play for Ohio State until the season is over.

3. Standardize the NIL deals so you lose all the money if you dont play the games. Or, add in bonuses for playoff and bowl games just like pros.

The weirdest thing about the playoffs and transfer portal is the timing of it all. If the playoffs have to run into late January, do they need to move the portal opening until that point too? If they do, classes have already started for likely most/all schools. Maybe they should reduce the transfer window to being a once a year, summer focused period.

Yes, you can announce the transfer, but unlikely you can enroll and participate in spring football. Yes, it does put a bit of a damper on the ability for a transfer to immediately connect with his new team, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. Loyal kids have one more semester leg up on an incoming kid, the whole sport isn't turning upside down while some teams are still in the fight for the title, etc. etc.

Excited for tonight. The first thread I saw this morning on one of the ND boards calls tonight an "exorcism." Hard to disagree. So many times ND gets this far and has disappointed in recent years. Much of that was under previous administrations. Can Freeman finally get the team to show up when it matters?

If ND wins, we'll hear the "It's just Indiana, let's see what they do against Georgia...." and if they lose, "see....always overrated." But the team needs this and the organization needs this, even if this year's run does end earlier than desired. Tonight is bigger for them than many realize and hopefully the best version of the team shows up to attack that.

Sat next to a guy on a plane yesterday who got his undergrad and grad degree from ND. Dude flew in from Brussles to visit his parents for Xmas. He wanted so badly to go to this game but his parents are 90 and he thought ditching them to go to the game might kill one or both of them.


Guy talked my ear off for the entire flight from ORD to DTW, which blessedly is only 50 minutes. To say he was excited is an understatement.

I don't think they can do a CBA until the players have a union, and they can't have a union until they are employees. We're going to see how these issues are dealt with when the NCAA - House settlement is finalized and approved. We know they are going to allocate a few billion to back pay to athletes over the past 8 years or so and have a revenue sharing framework going forward with a salary cap of about $20m for schools who opt into the deal. The deal strikes me as a band-aid at best that likely won't last long and will certainly have unintended consequences and create loopholes people have not considered. Non-revenue scholarship sports are likely going to be devastated. There will be some controls on boosters and NIL collectives but that is unclear. What is apparently not going to happen is the NCAA or any member school recognizing players as employees.

With the portal so active this time of year, kids on playoff teams are fielding offers and their teams have to pay stay bonuses to keep them around for the next month or so. Of course these players have no loyalty or real connection to their school, and are likely realizing they'll never have more leverage than they have right now. This is probably especially true for the b- and c- listers who won't be getting the huge offers in the off-season but have high value to their playoff team this week.

It's actually insane how wild West this all is. Idiotic that they can't come up with cleaner rules and such. Some obvious options for tweaks:

1. Start the season a couple weeks earlier. CFP should wrap by end of yearl And aign your idiotic transfer rules and stuff to the semesters better.

2. Or, transfer and just stay with the team. Who cares. It's obviously not about school. And you can miss one week of class at the start of the semester, get the materials online, and still transfer from Ohio State to Auburn but play for Ohio State until the season is over.

3. Standardize the NIL deals so you lose all the money if you dont play the games. Or, add in bonuses for playoff and bowl games just like pros.

I reckon for #3, they probably need a CBA. Which, of course, is what they should have done years ago.

I don't think they can do a CBA until the players have a union, and they can't have a union until they are employees. We're going to see how these issues are dealt with when the NCAA - House settlement is finalized and approved. We know they are going to allocate a few billion to back pay to athletes over the past 8 years or so and have a revenue sharing framework going forward with a salary cap of about $20m for schools who opt into the deal. The deal strikes me as a band-aid at best that likely won't last long and will certainly have unintended consequences and create loopholes people have not considered. Non-revenue scholarship sports are likely going to be devastated. There will be some controls on boosters and NIL collectives but that is unclear. What is apparently not going to happen is the NCAA or any member school recognizing players as employees.

I hear you, but I guess that's my point. They should recognize them as employees and let them unionize. Otherwise, it certainly appears they are going to lose every lawsuit that Tom Mars files.* And not going to be able to put many, if any, restrictions on players.

Agree completely, but of course *its complicated.*

These players are never going to be employed by the schools themselves. One possible solution is one I've been beating on for many years but likely will never happen in my lifetime - that separate legal entities are set up to employ the athletes, such as "Alabama Football LLC." Probably the most difficult hurdle for this will be how we can continue to fund tens of millions in annual executive compensation at the NCAA, power 5 commissioner offices and university athletic departments when the revenues are flowing through separate business entities.

Wazzou and Oregon State basically got relegated and treated like discarded trash. It's awful. This will have long lasting ramifications that will impact everything from enrollment to support to sustainability. These are tiny dots of towns with nothing around them. Football provided an escape and at times, hope and cheer. Think back to Wazzou pulverizing Oregon a few years ago when Game Day was there. THE TOWN OF PULLMAN RAN OUT OF BEER!!!!


Those days are gone and they aren't ever coming back. It's beyond depressing.
