2024 Detroit Lions: Draft complete. (16 Viewers)

I was just talking with a friend about Jamo. He must be a beast on the practice field, because his personality seems to be in direct opposition with what they are trying to build as a culture. His red flags extend well beyond just this gambling incident. Local sports talk has had some stories, he's known around the casino's, and he has an arrogance that is outsized for what he has actually accomplished.
I hope he matures and turns into the elite WR we were sold on, but you are ignoring some seriously bright red flags if you don't see the risk in him right now.
A lot of highly competitive athletes are into gambling, Michael Jordan is famously known for gambling. Most of the local talk guys are idiots and go out of their way to look for junk to be negative on. And really, before Sheila, the Lions were a terribly run franchise and the negativity was justified. But they are completely off base with the crap they say about Jamo. He is an introvert who did not have a strong family upbringing. But he is also confident and realizes he has super elite talent he loves to display on the field. He is pretty damn humble and quiet. Yeah, he thinks he can run a 4.2 40, because he probably can.
The serious red flags are when a player doesn't give max effort, doesn't improve. We don't see those types of flags at all with him. He's hyper competitive and this is yet another example of hypocritical policies by the league. But rules are rules and he should have known better.

I’ve got faith because Holmes and Campbell have shown to have very strict character profiles for the type of person they want on their team. They don’t agressively move up to take him unless he has impressed them through the process last year. They can of course make mistakes, but he must have shown a lot during interviews etc in terms of his love for football and his mentality, even if there has been some mistakes since

When Jamo and Gibbs turn out to be studs leading the team to a championship, I hope everyone remembers all the negativity being thrown at them.

being widely reported Detroit opens the year on TNF at Arrowhead

random Reddit guy claims his buddy at ticketmaster built this into their system today (IOW 80% chance it's b.s.)

home games (allegedly):

WK 2 SEA
WK 3 ATL

WK 5 CAR

WK 8 LV (MNF)

WK 11 CHI
WK 12 GB (Thanksgiving)

WK 15 DEN

WK 18 MIN

Didn't speculate on where the bye week falls

being widely reported Detroit opens the year on TNF at Arrowhead
This would get the toughest game on the schedule over with early. Would still have the entire preseason to prepare and 10 days off after to recover. I dislike most Thursday games, but this one wouldn't be off short rest.

I love it - let's see where we're really at, how far we've come, how far we have to go. Gonna be a few months before all the pieces are integrated but we cannot afford another poor start.

Pride of Detroit reporting the Week 4 game at GB will be a TNF Prime game.

***************

Workouts don't mean a thing but the level of participation has been encouraging. Doing a lot of positional drills with coaches and the vets are putting in work this week.

Only rookie to come to terms so far is Colby Sorsdal but don't think that's any cause for concern. Rookie Mini-camp starts Friday - Mo Abrahim and Starling Thomas V are 2 UDFAs who should have a good shot at making the 53 man. The latter was an ace gunner on returns in college and has blazing (sub-4.3) speed.

Still not convinced we did enough to give AG more talent. DL rotation should be OK if we get healthy years from from two of Harris, Romeo, Levi and Paschal. Hopefully Houston continues to be an effective designated pass rush specialist. Added IDL Christian Covington this week but I get the sense he's been declining. Solid Slot CB/S group, Jacobs, Moseley and Sutton should be fine outside, but no true CB1. It is what it is.

Opening line is +7 with the juice leaning more towards 6.5 than 7.5. I know the Lions are a popular team to bet but then again the defending champs are usually even more popular with all kind of stats in KC's favor. I thought it would open more in the +8.5 range.

The Lions are favorites in both games against the Packers:
  • Lions -1.5 at GB on Thursday night
  • Lions -4 vs. GB on Thanksgiving

Top 100 Players reveal is a ways off, but thought this was interesting:
  • 2018 - Stafford (31) and Slay (49)
  • 2019 - Slay (86)
  • 2020 - none
  • 2021 - Hockenson (93)
  • 2022 - none
  • 2023 - ????
Goff - fringe
Sewell - possibly
ARSB - should be right?
Hutchinson - not yet IMO but he'll get consideration

edit - I don't think CJGJ ia there but apparently some people think he should be

I think the Lions will compete in KC but needless to say I'm not counting on a win. Week 2 at home against Seattle will be a massively important game. Need to get that for multiple reasons.

I'm fascinated by Seattle, they're so similar to Detroit it's eerie. Restored a dismissed QB to glory, run oriented offense, rebuilding the defense. Both teams moved the ball up and down the field on each other last time they played. That game will tell me more than the KC game I think.

All NFC teams have 8 home and 9 road games this year. Next year Lions 9th home game could be an overseas one.

Season opens tough and if Detroit starts 0-2, it will be disappointing but maybe the ego check they need. Those are 2 playoff type games. If I am being very conservative, I see 4-4 going into the bye and 10-7 overall. Weird playing the Vikings in Week 16 and 18. We play the Bears with only 2 games in between. In general, I don't like this but it does make for a relatively softer 2nd half of the year to make our playoff push.

A few things.

Only one cold weather game on the schedule.

4 of 5 games on the road for weeks 13-17 will increase the level of difficulty for that period.

I don’t have Amazon Prime so will have to go incommunicado and watch TNF Packer game on delay.

I really liked last year’s schedule because all games were played at 1pm except Packer finale that was switched to night. Easy to keep track and plan around.

Love that we have the Chiefs road game week 1. No expectations going in to it, so as long as we don't get blown out, we'll still be feeling good. If you do win, you get instant national attention. Get a game you're probably going to lose anyway out of the way during JaMo's suspension. And a Week 1 Thursday night game gives you a chance to see what worked and what didn't and have the extra practice time to make changes before week 2.

Can't wait for the season to get here!

Just stop it. No one is being negative, we just refuse to announce them as hall of famers like you are when one kid hasn't played a single down in the NFL and the other has played like 5 games and has 3 touches and a suspension.

ESPN is reporting that Jalen carters license was suspended at the time of his dragracing incident. It was reported that the license was suspended because Carter failed to complete a driver education program which was the result of a previous speeding charge for doing 89 mph in a 45 mph zone. If Carter had completed the driver education course, no points would’ve been added to his license.

Somehow Carter was not charged with driving suspended, which in most states such as Michigan necessitates a minimum jail sentence. Also, I do not know Georgia law, but in many states participating in a drag race, which results in another persons’ death is a felony offense.

Carter, however, is being named as, one of the defendants in the lawsuit, brought by the family of the player who was killed in the crash

The more that comes out about Carter (and maybe the license suspension is one of the things that Dan Campbell was referring to that they’ve learned about Carter from one of his teammates,) the more comfortable I am in the Lions passing on Carter.

Schedule says three Thursday games, but it's better than it sounds because for one of them you'll have time off before the next Sunday and nothing precedes it (first week vs. KC).

But TNF vs. Green Bay and then Thanksgiving vs. GB should be interesting.

Vikings heavily late in the year. Apparently they think that'll be the big rivalry in the division. I like the sandwich game between the Vikings games. Could be one of those "means nothing games" in Week 17 vs. Dallas because MInnesota is a divisional foe and we see how those have worked out in the past with head-to-head and division wins playing more of a role than the overall W-L record.

In the last page you indicated Williams was a mistake saying he was not into the football life and said Gibbs and Campbell were a reach. Seems kind of negative to me. Sorry for being excited about the young players we drafted and thinking they might succeed.

I am extremely comfortable having passed on him. One of The Athletic writers that covers Detroit said when the news broke at the combine of his arrest warrant, an unnamed Detroit front personnel guy said something to the effect of "thank god, now our fans will understand when we pass on him". I don't think Detroit was ever in on him. Word was likely out about him off the field.

Nick Baumgardner (The Athletic) was at the Lions rookie camp today and had several tweets:
  • Rookie thoughts: Jack Campbell is gigantic and moves really well, also was very vocal directing traffic.
Sam LaPorta caught everything. Looked great this morning.
  • Broderic Martin was present. Very long as advertised. Fun personality, too, it seems. We’ll know more about those guys when pads go on tho.
  • Was also good to see Obinna Eze out there with the Lions rookies today. Detroit still seems invested in that project and I think that’s smart. His length at OT he wild. He seems to appreciate the process, too.

The experts keep pumping up the Eagles and all their great moves they made. I see a team which lost two very key coordinators and several key players. Two of the new guys they are pumping up are a guy who gives 80 percent, is out continually of shape and has legal troubles still, and another who is a Lions cast-off who has yet to put together a good season in three tries.

The Lions on the other hand are vastly improved in the secondary, should be much better at Linebacker, and IMO the running game should be greatly improved. Add back Jamo in week 7, and our recieving crew is going to be much better. Even the D-Line could be better with a couple players becoming healthy, a years experience for some rookies, and a few new guys who maybe one could pan out. At QB and OL we stayed at least the same and added depth.

Call me a homer, but the Lions will be a much more improved team than the Eagles. Maybe not catching them, but getting a lot closer than the experts are giving credit for.
