2024 Outlook for Ravens RBs - The King Henry era is here! (1 Viewer)

The Baltimore Sun's Jonas Shaffer said Latavius Murray (ankle) didn't practice Friday and is "likely" out for Week 7 against the Bengals. 

Murray has now missed an entire week of practice. Fantasy managers can safely assume he won't suit up against the Bengals. Baltimore's backfield rotation remains something of a mystery to the outside world, but Devonta Freeman -- who had a season high nine carries for 53 yards last week against the Chargers -- would seem to be the lead back with Murray sidelined. Ty'Son Williams will probably be active against the Bengals, though his role is a big question mark week in and week out. Le'Veon Bell could also be in the mix with Murray out.

Expecting a complete cluster of three unstartable RBs.   Certainly hope that Ty'Son looks like the best back with whatever touches he gets, but probably giving the edge to Freeman for most fantasy points.

I actually think Freeman is a sneaky good play this week. RB2 numbers?  BALT offense seems to always run all over the CIN defense.

 
Going on record to say Balt will give Bell 10 touches to see if they can trade him OR Just to see if he is worthy of sticking around to determine if they want to give TySon more of a role. 

So next year, Dobbins & Gus (UFA?) will be back and they might be looking at how the RB group will structure

Not for nothing, but Cincy is right behind Baltimore in the division.  Not sure if that’s the type of game where you go “let’s see if we can showcase this guy (that no one wanted or else they could have signed him off our practice squad) for a trade.”

This. 

Baltimore is in a dogfight for the #1 seed and they are trying to mix-&-match best they can just to find something that works. If Bell pans out, there's a less than zero % chance they trade him. Same for the other guys.

The Ravens RB situation is a mess, IMO, unless attrition leaves only one guy standing.

Bell clearly showing he does not belong on the field ....  5 touches for 5 yards?  Not worth the $$. 

Move on ... 

 
Latavius Murray (ankle) is not practicing on Thursday. 

Murray has not played or practiced since injuring the ankle in Week 6. Le'Veon Bell led Baltimore's running backs in carries in Week 7 (they had a bye in Week 8 ) with five, while Devonta Freeman had four and the lone touchdown. This backfield will remain hard-up to create fantasy points with that kind of split. Ty'Son Williams and Freeman have been the most productive backs by yards per carry for a run game that has struggled despite Lamar Jackson's obvious explosiveness.

Ravens reportedly cut Le'Veon Bell after just 5 games

What will the Ravens do in the backfield?

With Bell gone, the team will likely rely on Freeman and Murray as their primary running backs. The team already showed a preference for Freeman over Bell in Week 10, giving Freeman 10 carries while Bell received three carries. 

Murray hasn't played since Week 6 due to an injury, but the Bell release could be a sign Murray is closer to a return. Murray was listed as doubtful in Week 10, suggesting he at least had a chance to play in the contest.

In either scenario, it's going to be tough for a player to emerge as a true bell-cow back. The Ravens were content to use a committee once J.K. Dobbins went down with an injury, and Lamar Jackson is a constant threat to steal carries and touchdowns.

The Ravens are 6.5-point favorites at BetMGM against the host Bears on Sunday.

Latavius Murray (ankle) returned to Ravens practice on Wednesday.

The Ravens have moved on from Le'Veon Bell, so getting Murray back would be a boost for the Ravens' underwhelming backfield Murray has missed the last three games with a sprained ankle. If healthy, he will likely take back over as the Ravens' starter. Although Devonta Freeman can be expected to remain involved to some extent. All Ravens running backs are best avoided in Week 11 if Murray returns, with Murray serving as a desperation RB2 option.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Latavius Murray (ankle) is expected to play in Week 11 against the Bears.

Murray has been out since Week 6 and Devonta Freeman has played well in his absence. The veteran runner is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has three scores over his previous four games. Murray should return to starting duties but his split with Freeman may be tighter than it was in the opening weeks of the season. Neither back can be trusted but Murray has the slight edge for desperate fantasy managers in need of RB4 numbers.

Asked about running backs at a pre-draft presser, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said "if the right guy falls, we will certainly strike."

The Ravens have both J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards coming off injury, and the only back in their backfield rotation at the moment who had carries last year is Ty'Son Williams, so it could make sense to add a little stability. A Day 2 pick would be a red flag for the fantasy stock of Dobbins and Edwards, though both are under contract through 2023 at reasonable salaries. John Harbaugh recently noted that both backs could start training camp on the PUP list.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent RB Melvin Gordon is "in discussions" with the Ravens. 

Gordon, whose return to Denver seems more unlikely every day, would create a fantasy backfield nightmare if he signs with Baltimore and joins J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, both of whom are returning from ACL injuries. Turning 29 in April, Gordon would likely sign an incentive-laden deal with the Ravens if Baltimore can lure him into a short-term contract. Gordon flashed at times in 2021, posting the second highest yards per carry (4.5) of his six-year NFL career while scoring ten touchdowns for the Broncos. He would presumably split the workload in the Ravens' backfield, though it's unclear whether he would be the 1A or 1B back. His departure from Denver would catapult Javonte Williams into workhorse-back territory for 2022.

not saying he’ll be worthless, but for what people were paying this would be an extreme blow to his value.

Yeah I'm the idiot that traded away Barkley and Tyreek for Dobbins and Scary Terry a week ago.  :bag:  Luckily I have Gordon on this roster but still hardly ideal if the lands there. Great for Javonte though (whom I also own in this league) 

 
Bad timing for me.  Just two days ago realized that Ravens have 7 picks in rounds 3-4 which is a great area of this years draft to obtain some high quality RB depth. Seeing that I went about making some offers to move Dobbins but only sent out one offer so far and was waiting for a response.

I'm sure I'll get rejected and just pull back for now if Gordon signs but should he not sign with someone else I'm going to be a lot more aggressive about trying to move Dobbins before the draft. Not that I think a RB in that range would take his spot, not worried about that at all so long as Dobbins is healthy he'll be the top RB. Just an overall drain on a player whose major negative was already usage related upside.

 
The Athletic's Mike Sando believes the Ravens' 2022 draft picks "could signal Baltimore doubling down on its run-heavy offense" rather than a more balanced approach. 

Dealing Marquise Brown to the Cardinals, not drafting a wideout, and loading up on tight ends in the draft, Sando said, might show the Ravens are ready to return to their offensive roots after operating a balanced offense in 2021. The Ravens in 2021 had a 57 percent pass rate, 12 percent higher than in 2019 and 2020. It would hardly be surprising if the Ravens -- with a healthy Lamar Jackson under center -- revert to the slow-paced, run-heavy offense that netted them 407.3 yards per game (second most) and a league-leading 33.2 points per game in 2019. A massively run-heavy approach could impact the statistical ceilings of Mark Andrews and Rashod Bateman.

Love to see this and it makes total sense. Leaning into a player's strengths makes more sense to me than trying to make them "balanced". Let Lamar burn bright. If he gets hurt he gets hurt. Better than keeping him healthy in a middling offense for 5 years.

This is looking better than I could have imagined after the draft and free agency for Dobbins. The Ravens actions so far do not indicate any concerns about his health which is a huge positive. Hope his value does not start creeping up too much in redraft.

 
Gus Edwards (ACL) was held out of Ravens voluntary OTAs. 

The same is true of J.K. Dobbins (ACL). We have not heard much on Edwards' recovery other than coach John Harbaugh's March declaration that the team would "play it safe" with both Edwards and Dobbins' ACL rehabs, and that they could begin training camp on the active/PUP list. Sidelined since last September, Edwards should gain clearance some time during training camp as long as he has not suffered a setback. At least as of early June, the Ravens' backfield profiles as Dobbins taking the lead, Edwards operating as the breather back, and some combination of forces, perhaps including sixth-rounder rookie Tyler Badie, operating on third downs. Edwards will not be a part of that passing-game mix.

Cautiously agree here.  They've signed Mike Davis since you posted, but I also think that could simply be a means by which to lessen the load on Dobbins/Edwards during TC.

And in trading Brown...the WR corps looks desolate.  Having Lamar drop back as many times as he had to in 2021 got him hurt so getting back to a bludgeoning rushing attack would seem to be the Ravens plan.  Plus, they get Stanley back at LT hopefully.

Dobbins not only tore his ACL, he damaged his LCL.  I hope he doesn’t go on the PUP because I need him in one league, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

 

ESPN's Jamison Hensley speculates Mike Davis "could get the most carries early in the season."​

Gus Edwards (knee) is going to miss at least the first four games after being placed on the reserve/PUP list, and the Ravens are easing back J.K. Dobbins from his ACL injury. That leaves Davis in a good spot to get carries early in the season. Davis struggled before falling into a secondary role last season in Atlanta, but he will have a chance at RB3/FLEX value if he has a meaningful role in Baltimore's offense early in the season.

This keeps coming up in 2022 and it's mind-boggling. People just legit ignore the Ravens very-productive rushing blueprint and just make up stuff, ignoring that Devonta Freeman was racking up points with Latavius Murray (lesser so). With Drake a midweek signing, Davis should get a slight nudge regarding the Ravens prototypical run split.

At least for today, Mike Davis is a decent flex start in most leagues. He's only rostered in 19% of CBSSports leagues.

I legit do not know... you'd think it was Davis since he's been with the team longer and is stout in pass pro, but Drake is more dynamic. We could also be looking at a 'hot hand' scenario here.
 
Drake profiles as the 1A back with I guess Justice Hill the 1B now? Really odd Mike Davis became the guy to get 10% of the work but eh.
