*** 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers: Defense dominant in road win in Atlanta (20 Viewers)

Tomlin signs a three year extension

You can hear the yinzers crying off in the distance -- Caw'er, Caw'er, Caw'er
Nah, it's not about missing Cowher. Nothing to do with Cowher.

It's about what Tomlin hasn't accomplished since 2010 when Ben was still 28 years old.

It is what it is, though. Tomlin might as well have a lifetime contract as long as he wins 9 games per year and maintains his reputation.

If Tomlin's teams beat Jville and Cleveland those 2 years and lost the next round games, would people be satisfied? I know the field goal posts would move no matter what they last 8 yrs produced. They could have won the SB in 2017 and people would still want him gone. All this fake outrage and rambling on is just a waste of time. He's the coach, and the players win games. Same with all the other 31 teams.

Tomlin signs a three year extension
I know some fans will hate this because this was supposed to be Tomlin's "prove it" year, but I think this is a good thing.

This feels like the start of a new era (for better or worse). We made a fair amount of changes from last season going into this season. I think this is Tomlin's last chance to prove it with a new OC and QB options. It also extends Tomlin to be at the helm through this current era of defense which I think the players wanted. If neither Fields nor Wilson works out, we get a new QB next season and Tomlin has 3 years to get this team to greatness again.

We have an incredibly tough schedule this year that should be able to show if either of these QBs are the answer.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans were very critical of Bill Cowher back in the day.

Steeler's organization is big on stability. I don't think the Steeler's will ever fire Mike Tomlin.

Some knocks on Tomlin: Playoff Struggles (Lack of Super Bowl Wins just has 1 and some will say it's with Cowher's guys), Clock Management, Gets out coached, lack of coaching tree, loyalty to horrible coaches (Canada) and Discipline Issues.

Philly is the opposite of Pittsburgh they are hard on head coaches they've fired 2 head coaches who've won a Super Bowl.

I’m generally a Tomlin fan but I’ll add he is infamous for not making any meaningful halftime adjustments.

And there always seems to be those 1-2 games every year that are “Tomlin games” aka the Steelers lose to a team they are seen as much better than. Example - Cardinals and Pats last year.

Tomlin NEEDS a strong OC counterpart to compliment his defense. Never once have I heard about a "Tomlin" offense other than high level stay on schedule & don't turn the ball over. Nothing to hint at play design or scripting out play sequences. Halftime adjustment on offense coming from Tomlin makes me laugh. His head is 80% on defense. Being a players coach, the WR get unruly and need someone to keep them in check. There is no seed for an offensive tree to grow here.

Defensive tree??? To be fair, his record when TJ Watt doesn't play is abysmal. Despite that, he typically does a great job putting playmakers in a position to thrive. Makes good adjustments when injuries crop up (other than losing TJ). Division record is good mostly due to defense. Not many teams can draw up a D that shuts down Lamar. Mad respect.

Considering Tomlin's weakness with offense and discipline, Arthur Smith is an excellent counterpart. He's a strong leader, communicates well and brings more discipline than we've seen since Tomlin took over. Other than moving on from Kenny a year early, bringing in Smith could be the best move of the offseason.

Looking back at the Killer's B's what a travesty / lost opportunity

The "Killer B's" in the context of the Pittsburgh Steelers refer to the era from the 2013 season to the 2017 season when three offensive players were in their prime:
Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell , and Ben Roethlisberger, all of whom have initials beginning with the letter 'B'. This trio was considered one of the most talented offensive combinations in Steelers history. Despite their talent, they only won three playoff games during their six years together. Unfortunately, their era ended after Bell refused to sign the franchise tag in 2017, and both Brown and Bell eventually left the team. Kind of reminds me of Troy, Emmitt and Michael from Dallas. I'd prefer Ben and AB. I could argue for Bell too but I won't.

I strongly believe that if Mike Tomlin wasn't the HC. Russell and Justin would of went elsewhere.

The reason these teams underperformed is Todd Hayley. He was pushed on Tomlin by Rooney

Fields apparently really struggling in camp..

Be interesting to see how it plays out, but I would bet him and Steelers don't come to terms with anything and he walks after the season.

If you don't shorten the field into one half with simple read concepts, Fields will struggle mightily. He is not a traditional pocket QB who you can force to run through his progressions and read defenses. He will stink in that scenario as he did before, so if that's what the old guard is trying to force with him, then I have to shake my head.

In other news, with the new Stevenson contract Najee fans can enjoy his last season in Pittsburgh. He's not coming back unless they're willing to overpay and go well beyond the $6.8 million they passed up for his 5th year option.

Naj fans needed to say goodbye to him the moment the 5th year wasnt picked up, IMO.

Omar isnt Colbert. He's a"money/data" guy first and foremost. Cant imagine he'd have ever drafted a RB with a premium pick in the first place, but I'd have been/will be floored if he offers him the contract Im sure Harris is looking for.

Itd be doubling down on a mistake already made, and he doesnt strike me as that sort of dude.

Rhamondre Stevenson although a good running back personally I don't believe he earned that contract. Unless you're betting on 2022 going forward. He could of hit lightening in a bottle that season. New England has to pay someone there. They no longer have a Super Bowl bound team with talent.

Alot of Najee hate. I think that Rhamondre contract will only fuel his fire.

Both players came into the league in 2021. Here's a career comparison
Certainly! Let’s compare the career stats of Najee Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson:

  1. Najee Harris (RB - Pittsburgh Steelers):
    • Rushing Yards: 3,269 yards
    • Rushing Touchdowns: 22
    • Receiving Yards: 866 yards
    • Receiving Touchdowns: 6
    • Total Scrimmage Yards: 4,624 yards
    • Total Touchdowns: 28
    • Pro Bowl Selections: 1
    • For most of Najee's professional career he had to deal with the worst ever offensive coordinator in Steeler's history. Whose play calling was so anemic and readable by opposing defenses. Najeee faced alot of stacked boxes.
  2. Rhamondre Stevenson (RB - New England Patriots):
    • Rushing Yards: 2,265 yards
    • Rushing Touchdowns: 14
    • Receiving Yards: 782 yards
    • Receiving Touchdowns: 1
    • Total Scrimmage Yards: 2,265 yards
    • Total Touchdowns: 15
    • Pro Bowl Selections: None (as of now)
In summary, Najee Harris has more career rushing yards and touchdowns, while Rhamondre Stevenson has been efficient as both a runner and receiver. Keep in mind that their roles and team situations may impact these stats!

Point is they will be hard pressed to sign him after the contract given to Stevenson, that is if they were even being serious about it anyways. Najee has been very vocal in the past about RB contracts, and won't settle for any discounts, especially now.

I'm with you on this. I don't see Najee coming back. I think he will take the highest offer. Najee should have kept his mouth shut about RB contracts and let his agent do the talking. I still feel that the Steeler's should have taken the 5th year option. Hopefully for him that he doesn't sign with the Jets next year where Steeler's free agents' careers go to die Neil O'Donnel, Leveon Bell, Santonio Holmes.

...that is if they were even being serious about it anyways.

It's been my opinion that Khan isnt that serious about it. If he were, they would have picked up the 5th year option without even pausing.

I think he'd be fine with Najee, the player, remaining a Steeler. But for over 10 million per season? No freaking way I buy Khan thinks that's a good way to spend that money.

No "hate" from me for Harris. It's not his fault the old GM thought he was worth the first round pick that they spent on him, but that doesnt make him a 12m per year player.

I wouldn't want to be paying Rhamondre Stevenson that much money either.

Najee should be pumped the 5th year option was declined. It releases him from CBA chains a year earlier. Now is his chance to seize the opportunity.

I think the Steelers did him a favor by opting out of the 5th year option. Najee will be 27 next season closer to that age wall. Could have limited his chance to earn a big contract until he turns 28 or restricted FA at 29. Out of respect, let the man sign his 2nd contract before he hits 28. He's very capable of being a Workhorse 3 down back. Been reliable and durable grinding out yards in stacked boxes for years. Deserves a shot.

Does he take up a roster spot while suspended
No.

Also his salary does not count. Not that he’s paid much but adds another half a mill to work with.

He’ll be available for all the division games, 9 total plus potential playoffs for a cap hit of around half a million. Signing him was good business.

there was no good business signing him.. The dude sucks and is a pos

Can't believe how some of you cheerlead woman abusers.

I personally haven't seen anyone cheerlead woman abusers. I have seen people like me stating that people should have second chances depending on the situation. Now I'm not going to go into should he deserve a second chance. No because it wasn't my decision someone in the Steeler's organization made that decision. But I think resigning him was more of a familiar face along with a low dollar contract.

Saying it's a good business move is cheerleading.. There is nothing smart about signing a player that did what he did. They are just lucky he only got 8 games.

I also don't buy the second chance ****.. The guy didn't get a speeding ticket, or even a DUI.. He violently assaulted a female, then ran from the police where there was a hunt for him. That really IMO don't deserve a second chance. Let me ask, how would you be handled if you did the same? Again, I said this in the KC thread. These guy continue to break the law and do it cause they know it will be ok, most of them are above the law. Henry Ruggs murdered a young lady, took her life away from her, and got the bare minimum. I know we are football fans, but **** like that is sickening to me.

Karl you're beating a dead horse and I respect your viewpoint. Sometimes it's just better to move on and/or say the serenity prayer ;)

If I owned the Stiller's which I don't I would not have signed him for all the tea in China. He's an at-risk player on the roster whose 29. He was a 3rd round pick who never transitioned into anything other than a slot corner.

never transitioned into anything other than a slot corner.
I would point out he is also is a year away from earning a 3 year $33M contract based on how he performed for this team.

That we get that for roughly half a million and he's available for every division game as well as against the Chiefs, Eagles and potentially the playoffs is a really nice get at a position of need. Not overly dissimilar to what we did at the QB spot, just different circumstances, but those circumstances being what they are enabled the team to get a heavy financial discount.

:towelwave:

It seems like espn is trying to pump Fields up, but I am hearing no chance and he really still struggling in the pocket.
Agree plan A hasn’t changed. Media loves showing the big highlight plays but glossed over mistakes. It is encouraging Fields looked terrific practicing in pads. Seems to be improving

Arthur Smith has Fields plays in the playbook. Curious if they are mostly short yardage/goal line situations. Trotting him out on short yardage shots has to benefit Najee. Fields is a bit of a cheat code running the ball.

Trade for Aiyuk?!

My guess, we will learn more 8/18 or 19. Think it's funny the latest "report" has him going to play with Watson in Cleveland or New England & the holdup might be Aiyuk not wanting to go to either team. Sounds like a bunch of hot methane gas. Aiyuk wants paid. It's funny they said Cleveland is interested then a parting shot about Pittsburgh needing to step up with an offer. Real subtle. Omar is doing a great job and can sit back and do Omar things.

Can Pickens handle that though??

Heard Olineman and 2nd rounder. Maybe more picks.
I feel like it'd have to be a pretty good OL for that little. One of the rookies maybe? I can't see SF doing that for James Daniels or Isaac Seumalo and can't see the Steelers trading Broderick Jones.

I saw this and Tomlin simply must agree with Arthur that he too likes Van Jefferson.

If Aiyuk is traded, I always thought of Van as a three anyway.
