2025 College Football Thread: Akron recruiter scoffs when player mentions maybe wanting to go to Penn State (35 Viewers)

Heard on the radio a clip of Ben Roethlisberger saying maybe it was best for the Steelers and Mike Tomlin both to seek new starts. And then said (I think probably tongue in cheek) that Tomlin could go and coach Penn State.

Penn State is currently between Montana State and Akron in the recruiting rankings. Years long disaster incoming.
Won't they eventually just hire a coach and he brings in 40 kids from the portal so it doesn't really matter?
Sure they will. Its a great chance to step right in at a legacy program and be a difference maker.

Do 17/18 year old kids know Penn State is a "legacy program"? It's been decades since Penn State was a championship contender. In between, they had the nastiest scandal in college football history.

Not sure it's the job old guys like us think it is. Plus, it's in the middle of nowhere. Hard pass as a player.

Penn State made the National Championship semi-finals a year ago.

The scandal came out when they were like, 4 years old.

And they fired their coach before the next season was over. What a "legacy program"!

Tell me, what do you remember most from their semi-final run season? Losing to Oregon in the Big 10 championship, losing to Ohio State (again), losing to Notre Dame or beating Boise State?

You know who wasn't 4 years old when the child rape and cover-up scandal dominated headlines? Their parents.

This program is serious doodoo. Hate to see it.

Parents weren't 4 years old... but player's parents didn't stop Penn State from having top 20 recruiting classes for years now. 15th last year. 13th the year before. 6th the year before that.

To say Penn State is in a deep hole right now because of Franklin's firing, I would completely agree with. And it would be hard to argue against since some of his 2025 recruits decommitted and are following Franklin to Virginia Tech.

But it doesn't make much sense the Paterno scandals would suddenly be playing some huge factor again when they haven't for some time now.

Y'all I'm in my 30s and I don't ever think of Penn State as an important program or blue blood.

Programs I think are prestigious football Blue bloods, in no particular order:
Oklahoma
Texas
Ohio St
Michigan
USC
Oregon
Alabama
Georgia
Notre Dame

Then probably also
Miami
LSU
Clemson
Florida State

Penn State had a dynamic coach who was a great recruiter. Now he's gone and Penn State has......nothing now in place to succeed him. And Franklin just had a pretty good day at another university.

You know who holds a grudge against Penn State and Joe Paterno turning a blind eye to child rape? Karma.

Brian Hartline to USF. Huge loss for Ohio St (already impacting their recruiting). Big hire for USF.
Wow. I really thought he'd be Penn State's backup plan when Sitake fell through. I really don't know where PSU goes from here as Hartline could be a great hire for Penn State, let alone USF. Feels like a homerun hire for USF.
Dabol is the only one I think they can do. No idea if he is interested or not but they are running out of options that their stakeholders will be ok with.

Thought for sure Hartline would be at PSU..would have been a good fit. Hartline was the main recruiter of all the WRS, and ran the passing game at OSU so this one hurts the Bucks for sure.
He seems to gave been a powerful engine for their recruiting for both WR's and in Florida which is obviously an important market. Good fit for him and good hire for the school.

Lincoln Riley is really really good at recruiting. The simple announcements that USC put out on social media for their signees are really cool and very well done. They will probably kill it in the portal too.
I think the social media stuff is more about Chad Bowden and his team than Riley. As much as I despise USC, if you can't recruit there then you can't recruit period. They have money, they have L.A., they have amazing talent of coeds, and I suppose there is somewhat of a legacy and brand too if you are into that sort of poo. They pretty much own SoCal and can certainly recruit big gets outside of there as well. That all said, you can't get a top recruiting class if the HC isn't on top of things and putting in the effort regardless if all the boxes are checked.

They did pretty good recruiting recently under Franklin. Is it as big of a brand as it was for us older guys? No. But it still has some power... or at least did. It will be interesting to see what they do in the portal but they need to finalize their HC now. Either go get Dabol or make Terry Smith the new HC but do it now.

If the Steelers are dumb enough to let him go then my Raiders better go get him or I will riot.

Michigan State has been more relevant in my lifetime. They are basically the Texas A&M of the big 10. Can't beat rival schools and rarely win a big game anyone cares about.

I think there is tiers to this. Top Tier:
Alabama
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Oklahoma
USC
Michigan
Texas

Second Tier (sometimes called 'new bloods'):
Oregon
Georgia
Miami
Florida St
LSU
Clemson

Bubble schools that were blue bloods but kind of on the outside looking in:
Nebraska
Penn St
Tenn
Michigan St

That is how I see it at least.

One of the quotes I saw lately fits this better than many realize. As you are alluding to, part of this involves sustaining a brand over time so it retains status.

Brian Kelly kept being talked up as saving ND football when he was there. Lots of disagreement amongst fans on that one. But the quote I heard no one disagrees with - “Marcus Freeman made ND cool again.”

He’s winning more than Kelly ever did, but his real magic is he revived the cool factor for today’s athlete towards ND. Today they tied for signing the most five star players and had a top 2-3 class. The 2027 class might be better too. Freeman revived the “it” factor.
