2025 College Football Thread: Lane Kiffin suddenly feels compelled to read morals clause of contract (145 Viewers)

It honestly feels like they should go into next year with an interim head coach and then see who is available next season.

Can't do that. Would be terrible for recruiting/retention. Have to get someone in quickly who will talk to the current players (especially Bryce) and get them to stay.
Yeah I doubt they go that route but wouldn’t rule it out
They have deep pockets and regularly put kids in the league. They’re one of the best college programs in the country I doubt they stay down for long

They also made head-spinningly stupid hires like Brady Hoke and Rich Rod. They can stay down far longer than fans can stay rational. We've seen it happen.
Yeah but that was before you could legally pay players. Lot easier to flip a few kids these days

What makes playing in Ann Arbor any better than playing in LA, Austin, Florida or Ohio State when each of these schools has the same ability to pay the same amount of money?

I feel like that is the lesser of two evils. Hiring the wrong coach this late and after the coaches are picked over would set them back five or more years. Taking a gap year sets them back one or two.

Should also probably let the new AD do the hiring as well. I would want absolutely nothing to do with Warde Manure if I'm Michigan.

Yes, they need a new AD first. Who wants to be hired by a lame duck.

I am not sure there is anyone on that list that could keep up with Michigan in spending besides Texas or USC. At least not long term. A brief look at the booster and alum lists at those schools shows some pretty deep pockets. I looked at this when the claim was that ONLY ND could go it alone as an Independent. Turns out there are several schools that have multiple donors that could go it all by themselves and support the athletic departments at $65M a year and it be a rounding error for those supporting.

I will, after he transfers to Oregon.

That's half the list of what I posted...plus both are much better locations weather wise, to say nothing about the coeds.

You know what other school considers $65 million a rounding error? Nike knows.

Michigan is in some serious trouble right now.

There is a lot that goes into these kids decisions. Relationships matter. Culture matters. Fandom matters. Education matters. Development matters. Location matters. Proximity to home matters. System matters. Playing time matters. Legacy matters. Winning matters. Tradition matters. Facilities matters. A number of different uniforms matter to those who go to Oregon. On and on. Of course money matters and what is most important to the kids will always be different.

I recently heard the Love had been offered more money to go to Texas A&M out of HS but chose ND. I don't know the it's and out's of why he decided in ND for less money but it does seem to have worked out for him. Odds are he will be a high draft pick this year.

I find the recruiting process fascinating. It is largely why I post commits and of course it is ND because that is what I follow but I eat up learning about kids decisions not just for football but it is really honestly an intricate and personal thing that has a lot of implications for these kids.

We're done with the whole "student athlete" notion right? They are rented athletes each season.

There are over 30,000 D1 football players. My impression is the majority probably still qualify as "student-athletes" under any reasonable definition of that term. How much NIL is a back up right guard earning at a MAC or Sun-Belt school? I think the scholarship, room, board and degree is still extremely important for most college football players.

I was addressing the "pay the same amount of money" comment and those you listed. Only a few schools can do that objectively. That was my only point. I make no comment on state of the school or situation

Michigan to keep sketchy AD Manuel. What are they doing?

In his defense he did ask Moore and the assistant if they were having an affair. They both said no, so he wrapped up his thorough investigation of the matter.
This isn't his only strike and retaining him is ridiculous imo. His issues span more than just the football program and it's multiple scandals, there's multiple sports with scandals under his tenure.

I don't know all the details, but this does seem like an ideal time to change direction if the University isn't totally sold on the AD. Clean slates on these rebuilds/retools usually seem to work out better lont-term IMO.

It's the direction i wish they'd take. How much direct blame for Moore, sign gate, Mel Pearson hockey, Juwan Howard basketball, Weiss hacking computers, and plenty more falls directly on Manuel I don't know, but it's all taking place under his watch and i don't trust him to handle righting the ship.

That has been done for quite some time. When is the last time we have heard of a player benched for poor classroom performance. Half of the the players don`t even attend class..it is all online. Shadruer Sanders said he never entered a classroom at UC.

College football today has zero to do with actual school and educating young men for their future. My son in law helps coach high school football and he says that 9th and 10th grader players are talking about how much NIL $$$ they can make.

What will stop high school kids getting paid soon? I mean they can work part time jobs now..when will NIL trickle down to high school?

I can`t stand Manuel, but what I have been told he interviewed both of them after hearing the noise and both denied. When he heard of the rumors from others he said give me hard evidence and I will fire Moore on the spot

Then he informed Moore first that he was relieving Shiver of her duties in the athletic department.

When he informed her she went nuclear on Moore and provided all the evidence and said Moore had been stalking her. Moore was then called in and fired.

It makes so much sense now. Again "rumors" are that in the last month Moore was on an emotional roller coaster blowing up at assistant coaches..he knew his world was about to come crashing down.

Sad thing is a black local sports guy said back to back "Moore and Juwan Howard" sure did not do future black HCs at Michigan any favors.

Supposedly there were three investigations into Moore and the staffer. Mr. Magoo must have been on the case because this should not have been hard to find. He was banging cocktail waitresses two at a time!

That I don`t know. I do know the affair was going on for quite some time. I asked my daughter who knows many people in the department. "How did Moore think this was going to end?" If he ended it you know darn well she would file a lawsuit and have all the evidence needed: If she was let go from her position she would file a lawsuit and have all the evidence needed for an out of court settlement. It seemed like Moore was obsessed with her and if he divorced his wife and ended up with assistant that would have been a disaster as well.

How could Moore have been so stupid is what everyone around the program is wondering.
Actually they both made terrible life changing decisions. Decisions that impacted many people other than themselves.

Arraingment supposedly at 1 PM today. Moore being represented by Joe Simon, probably one of the best criminal defense attorneys around. I'd be very surprised if any of this sees a courtroom. Charges will probably be plead down and/or completely dismissed.

The length of the time the affair occurred is where I think AD Manuel takes some deserving heat. I don't think Michigan is any different than a lot of other high profile football programs. It just really becomes a game of plausible deniability and if the headaches are worth it. Moore wasn't above the cut line and this is the fallout. I think Manuel needs to own it though.

This is a DIII school describing NIL with "student athletes". There are no scholarships in DIII. Sure we aren't talking millions of $.

Unconfirmed but might be a cocktail waitress or three.

How much NIL is a back up right guard earning at a MAC or Sun-Belt school? I think the scholarship, room, board and degree is still extremely important for most college football players.
Cletius you nailed it with your comment, my son and I made several visits for football, mostly MAC and FCS schools. Largely these schools pride them on getting players to graduate and make their money through the jobs they can attain via their degrees. Everyone we visited had a requirement of 8-10 hours of study hall per week at the athletic building for all players. Plus the number of support staff to help a player navigate school and sports. I spoke to one player during a tour and he stated to me with the amount of support staff and studying requirements it is nearly impossible for a player to not graduate. If you think about it, all these smaller schools are all very similar, the one thing they pride themselves on is graduation rate and earning potential when players graduate. Obviously, top level division 1 is different where players can move around and be enticed by NIL money.

This is a DIII school describing NIL with "student athletes". There are no scholarships in DIII. Sure we aren't talking millions of $.

I kinda like this idea.

My son plays at a D3 school in Wisconsin and I would love to go on there and buy his gear with his name on it and stuff. As would our extended family. I'm sure he would earn tens of dollars from this.

They’re already getting paid the same way college players used to get paid. Here in SoCal the stud athlete is recruited, given a scholarship to a private school. Their family get help relocating to the area, or the athlete lives for free with donors. My friend’s kid was the first pick in the MLB draft a ways back. My buddy sat next to Scott boras at the World Series that year. His insights into that world were eye opening.
