2025 Detroit Lions: Game 1 Lions vs Packers. (33 Viewers)

Lions headed to the 2024 Pro Bowl:

ED Aidan Hutchinson
TE Sam LaPorta
C Frank Ragnow
ST Jalen Reeves-Maybin
OT Penei Sewell

Hutch & the 3 offensive players were all selected as backups

ARSB left off; AJ Brown & Lamb are the starters, Evans & Nacua backups

Five Pro Bowl players are the most the Lions have had since the 2014 season (Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Ndamukong Suh, and Glover Quin). But Detroit has a good chance of surpassing that total because they also have sevenplayers currently listed as alternates, including two who are the top alternates. They are:

  • QB Jared Goff (second alternate)
  • RB Jahmyr Gibbs (first)
  • RB David Montgomery (fourth)
  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (first)
  • G Jonah Jackson (third)
  • LB Alex Anzalone (fifth)
  • PR Kalif Raymond (fourth)

Sewell not getting a starting nod is horrendous.

In terms of fan voting, here are final positional ranking of Detroit Lions' players.

(Fan vote counts for 1/3 the process):

Ragnow - 4th
Hutchinson - 7th
Joseph - 10th
Goff - 8th
Gibbs - 4th
Montgomery - 8th
Sewell - 5th
LaPorta - 4th
St. Brown - 7th

Basically most of the Lions ranked higher in peer voting but lost out in the popular vote from the casual masses.

Still better than MLB I guess.

Would much rather play the Packers. Loves first playoff game, and I don’t think we allow thanksgiving to happen again. Take that over the Rams comfortably

I would be perfectly ok if the Lions rested some starters in the second half
Would be the smart thing to do

It should be under consideration but no indication they will do so
Seems Vegas is the only "indication" Detroit may not be as full of octane as stated on Sunday. I would think, in the least, the Lions would come out ####ed off from the get on Sunday, but FanDuel has the 1st half spread at only -1.5 for Detroit (granted with a high hold of -125). I've bet the first half in favor of the Lions at the -1.5 and the full game spread in favor of then Lions -3.5. With the crazy outside chance both Philly and Dallas lose, both playing the late afternoon game, I can't see Lions not playing to win and win big on Sunday as this is the quickest route to resting players later in the game with a big lead. While I don't wear the NFL conspiracy :tinfoilhat: , the narrative seems too good to pass up that Washington and The Giants just might make things interesting in the afternoon should the Lions win. To having a rooting interest in both games I've bet Wash +13.5 and The NYGs +5.

It will be interesting to see if they give Hooker some snaps. Most likely they would want to give Teddy some reps, but it would be fun to see Hooker get some action.

I believe Hooker can be a big surprise to the upside.

I think Hooker will get a ton on snaps next training camp and preseason games. If anyone gets snaps late in this game it should be Bridgewater, seeing as he's the #2 QB this year.

Hendon basically gets no reps during the week. It’s up to Teddy; if Bridgewater needs the reps, he takes all of them. Hooker’s role is scout team QB.

Would be highly ill advised to give him any snaps this year.

Teddy should get some reps - he hasn't played real action in a looong time, and with it being his last year in the NFL, it would be nice to give him some time playing against Minnesota, the team who drafted him. I'd expect him to play most of the 4th.

For sure.
Then root for GB and SF to both win their games this week, each a 3-4 point home favorite at 4:30pm.
Would be ironic if all of that happens, except Philly and Dallas also lose and Lions end up playing LAR in the 2-7 matchup. (And for the record, I would totally take that)

Ruled OUT

  • WR Jameson Williams (ankle)
  • TE Brock Wright (groin)
  • EDGE James Houston (IR, ankle) — evaluation days remaining: 13

Questionable

  • DT Benito Jones (illness)
  • DT Alm McNeill (IR, knee) — evaluation days remaining: 18
  • DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson (IR, pectoral) — evaluation days remaining: 5
Jones is dealing with an illness but was able to return to a full practice on Friday and looks to be headed in the right direction to play on Sunday.

McNeill and Gardner-Johnson are both expected to be activated from injured reserve this weekend and available to play against the Vikings. The Lions have already cleared two roster spots - Buggs and Firkser - in anticipation of their return.

Full practice

  • TE Sam LaPorta (ankle)
  • LT Taylor Decker (groin)
  • C Frank Ragnow (toe/back/knee)
  • RG Graham Glasgow (rest)
  • CB Cameron Sutton (toe)
LaPorta was practicing in full on Friday and will be in the starting lineup against the Vikings. The Lions starting offensive line has taken their appropriate rest days and appears good to go for Sunday. Sutton got in a complete week of full practices and is also ready to play.

Do Lions go all out this week to try and get the 2 seed or will they rest guys after a half? We have a Week 18 contest in our league for a little $. I own Goff, ARSB. Wondering if I should pivot to Mullens as I also have Mahomes out.

Don't have an ESPN+ subscription, but Barnwell was kind enough to tweet out a screencap of his Lions writeup. No surprise that he identifies Goff as the Lions' biggest liability heading into the playoffs. Also says that we should want to avoid a Dallas rematch (not much anyone can do about that, obviously)

I thought Detroit matched up just fine with Dallas. Obviously there was the controversial play but there were 2 other 50-50 plays that could have totally swung the game. Lamb's fumble out of the end zone and Barnes inability to wrap up Dak on the 98 yard TD. Those 3 plays that could have gone very different ways and were really the points that titled the game. I walked away from the Dallas game feeling like we could hang with them. Who else has played them that tough in Dallas?

I think Detroit's biggest liability is it's pass defense. Not even close IMO. Sure Goff is prone to some bad turnovers but he is also spearheading one of the most productive passing offenses in the league. As for our pass defense, the Lions give up 7.7 yards per pass attempt- 5th worst, they give up a 1st down on 36% of the pass attempts- 3rd worst, only 6 teams have fewer sacks.

Yes, I mostly agree with this. I feel pretty good about a potential rematch in the divisional round, too. The CeeDee coverage was awful, but one would hope they could scheme it better than they did (Sutton clearly couldn't hang with him one-on-one).

The Goff thing is what it is at this point. You know it's always lurking, and you just have to hope he doesn't screw up at the wrong time (which he did twice in the Dallas game, on the second INT and the final conversion attempt). But let's say that, for whatever reason, the illegal touching penalty never gets called and Detroit wins 21-20. We all walk away saying, "Goff made that one terrible throw on the INT, but when the chips were down he led them on a really impressive game-winning drive."

We know from his history that Goff can lead a team to the Super Bowl. It may take a bit of an inside straight to get there, but it's not out of the question

I don't really care if we play the Rams or Packers. But it might be better if we play the Packers, meaning the Rams would be the 7 seed.

First, I don't think the Packers can beat the Cowboys on the road but the experienced Rams definitely could. Not saying they will but they have a much better chance than the young Packers team.

So if we play the Packers and win, which I expect, and the Rams upset the Cowboys, we would get a second home playoff game and the Rams would play the 49ers.

Lots of ifs but I am rooting hard for the Packers to win tomorrow and the Rams to lose. I think it's our best chance to get two home playoff games.

The Lions officially activated Ceedy Duce and Alim McNeill from IR. In addition, they are elevating FB Jason Cabinda and DT Tyson Alualu from the practice squad.

My parlay calculator math is a little rusty but per current odds there is about a 60/40 chance of facing the Rams instead of Packers round 1. It just occurred to me that the Rams "storyline" is one that could propel the game into one of the prime time time slots while the Pack may not. I prefer the early games myself but that's just me.

As long as it’s not the Peacock-exclusive game on Saturday night

Forward down the field,
A charging team that will not yield.
And when the Blue and Silver wave,
Stand and cheer the brave.
Rah, Rah, Rah.
Go hard, win the game.
With honor you will keep your fame.
Down the field and gain,
A Lion victory!

With
  • David Montgomery (13 TDs)
  • Jahmyr Gibbs (11)
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown (10)
  • Sam LaPorta (10)

Lions are the second team in NFL history with 4+ players each recording 10+ scrimmage TDs in a season.

Gibbs & LaPorta are the first rookie teammates with 10+ TDs each
