2025 Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ New innovation on being a **** show ☠ (14 Viewers)

Geno is a ceiling 8-10 win QB, Nothing more.
What have the raiders been winning?

It's awfully tough to please anyone when the only acceptable goal is the immediate winning of the next Super Bowl.
Immediate winning of a Super Bowl? No. A nonzero likelihood of competing within the next 2-3 years? Yes. I don't see how Geno moves the needle in that regard and since they gave up a 3rd rd pick, I anticipate an extension coming.

Geno Smith will never be the starting QB of a Super Bowl winning team. Other than Pete Carroll trying to establish his culture by getting a guy he feels comfortable with as the face of the offense, I agree with MAC_32, this move doesn't move the needle for me.

Im pretty sure someone as intelligent as Tom Brady is , and having played thru the best run of Division and SB wins in NFL history , hes going to know the blue print to building a winning franchise .

I have complete faith in this upper management

Who in Vegas is trying to win the Super Bowl the next two years? Lmfao. What is going on here? Raise the floor, draft well, then get serious about trying to win it 3-4 years from now. Baby steps. Vegas should be trying to get to 10 wins and a 7 seed this year. You have to change the culture and raise the floor before you have any hopes of winning it all.

Geno Smith is 35 years old in the last year of his contract. So you're either, A) in the same situation next offseason; or B) extending Smith and then in 3-4 year your back to searching for a QB. At least, if you went the Sam Darnold route, in 3-4 years he'd still be around. Geno Smith, not so much.

ETA: Russell Wilson wouldn't have cost a 3rd round pick. He's only one year older than Geno Smith. I don't understand what LVR are doing here, Smith isn't a long-term viable option.

This team has SUCKED for 20 plus years. This is a win.

I don't think people understand. In the Jets thread some months ago and even a year or two ago (ever since his first completed year starting for the Seahawks), I was clamoring for the Jets to see about Geno's availability. Any competent QB instead of what we've got or were trotting out there (especially given the cost to do it) would be better. Geno's a good QB, IMO. Enjoy it.

Tough to see 10 wins and a playoff berth this year when they are the 4th best team in the division. Agree those are appropriate goals, though.

An issue with targeting 3-4 years from now to "get serious about trying to win it" is Carroll's age. Who will be the head coach in 3-4 years? That in addition to the question of who the QB will be.

Probably a sort of best case scenario for the Raiders is that Carroll stays for 5 years and raises the floor steadily to the point that they are competing for playoff spots by the end of that period. Meanwhile, Reid and Harbaugh both retire within 5 years, putting those teams through a coaching transition and possibly creating opportunity for the Raiders to move up in the pecking order and really compete for a division title. (Although the Raiders would also have to go through their own coaching transition.)

For that to be a legit best case scenario, at some point the Raiders will have to replace Geno with a top 15-ish or better QB. That is the hardest part, but they now may not need to worry about it for 3 years or so.

Why would harbaugh retire within 5 years?

Will Carrol groom a successor? Is it already graham?

Finding a qb is the holy grail. I suspect they will take one every year in the mid second or lower in the hopes of striking gold.

Yeah, that's a smart move, extending a 35 year old mid-tier starting QB with a 3 year horizon until the team is ready to compete. The Raiders would have been better, winning 3 games next year and drafting a QB.

Uhhh they’ve been doing that since 2002 and I’m sure you’ve noticed it hasn’t worked.

You’re an eagles fan right? You guys won 2 super bowls with a second round pick and whatever the hell Nick Foles is. Been a solid culture and foundation and find the QB once you’ve done that. The Raiders have been one of the biggest loser franchises in sports for two decades now, you gotta turn it around.

I doubt Geno takes the Raiders to the Super Bowl but thinking it is entirely impossible does not align with the actual composition of starting Super Bowl QBs.

Go back to 2000 and see. Even if you only count Tom Brady one time something like 30% of the 50 starting QBs in the Super Bowl were drafted in the second round or later.

30% isn't some kind of Lloyd Christmas fever dream.

It would be pretty stupid if the Raiders extend Geno, at least, before the draft. It is not unheard of that good QB prospects fall.

Carrol was the coach when the Seahawks payed good money to sign Matt Flynn only to have Russel Wilson win the job in training camp

According to Adam Schefter:
Back story: Seahawks were working to extend Geno Smith’s contract over the past week. When progress was not being made, the Raiders stepped in and showed interest in acquiring Smith. With Seattle struggling to get a new deal done with Smith, they opted for the third-round pick instead.

Its wild to me that anyone would think trading for Geno was a bad move by the Raiders. He's the best QB they've had since...Gannon?
Yea, fairly easily too. I guess Carr had that one good year but that’s it. Raiders fans should be over the moon imo.

I don't understand why I am seeing this comment twice now. Carr had multiple good years.

By comparison, how many good years would you say Geno has had?

They might extend him 2 years, with a reasonable out after 2026. This years QB class is a waste. I wouldn't even draft one this year. Draft one next year and build the roster this year.

We must draft one. Dart in the 2nd would be thrilling. Howard or Milroe in the 4th would be a good developmental target. Hell I'd be ok with trading down from 6 to the 20's and reaching for Dart there.

I don’t understand the posts that say that signing Geno somehow blocks them from finding their young QB of the future. Draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round this year and let them fight it out, just like the Seahawks did with Flynn and a rookie Russell Wilson.

So the answer is “yes, and” and not “no, but”.

IMO for any team that is not a contender, the objective should be to put the team on a path to becoming a contender, even if that takes a number of years. Are the Raiders a contender with Geno? IMO the answer is no. But that may be okay if they can build up the roster talent while he holds down the QB position, as long as they are then able to replace him with a QB who gives them a legit chance at contending. That will still be the ultimate challenge, they are just delaying that by some number of years.

And that is likely complicated somewhat by the fact that Carroll may not have more than a few years as the head coach, meaning there will be a reset coming there also.
Things move very quickly in the NFL. Look year-over-year and something like 50% of playoff teams don't make it back. Washington had the #2 pick last year for a reason. Jayden Daniels may be the Truth but so was CJ Stroud two years ago.

Any team is capable of making a fast turnaround but it won't happen if you don't try. Banking on a third round rookie QB is worlds more risky than using the #93 pick on a, now proven commodity who allows the franchise to build while he mans the most important position on the field.

It very likely won't lead to a Super Bowl appearance, but the same can be said for 30 of 32 teams every year. But Geno is a much smarter bet for the 93rd pick than a QB who didn't merit first round consideration.

You don't know that. It seems like people who are saying things like "8-10" wins is his ceiling or "Geno Smith is their solution?" with three laughing emojis are getting at something like I'm saying.
We heard the 8-10 wins with Jared Goff.

Are you suggesting that Geno Smith right now is comparable to Jared Goff when Detroit traded for him?

Geno is eight years older than Goff was when the Rams traded him, so no.

Purely as a factor of on field production at the time? Yes. Easily.

The point of my post was the age difference. Goff still had room to grow, obviously. Geno is who he is at this point, especially going to play under Carroll (i.e., not much reason to expect offensive ingenuity will spark Geno to new heights).

So, who is Geno at this point?

He's 34, the same age Rich Gannon was when he joined the Raiders. And Geno has been performing at a higher level over his 30-33 age years than Gannon.

I am in total agreement that there is no reason to get overly excited about Geno Smith, particularly in the AFC West but, can you really say, with confidence, that you know Geno has maxed out?

I say you can't, particularly in an era where more and more QBs are playing at a very high level far later in their careers than they did even a decade ago.

And Pete Carroll isn't the interesting coaching factor in this equation.

Yes, I can say IMO Geno has maxed out. I understand everyone may not agree.

As for Gannon, when he joined the Raiders, he was playing for Gruden. IMO Gruden had a huge impact on Gannon's success. Carroll is not Gruden in terms of influence on QB success in the passing game.

No but Goff was written off by then and considered a bridge QB.

Dey wrote me off, but I ain't write back!

I just saw something that I did not know, surprised me and gets me more excited about Geno.

Apparently he is the #1 QB for accuracy over the last 4 years.

More importantly, signing Geno allows the Raiders to avoid the desperately reaching for a QB in any round this draft rather than taking a player that can contribute. I don’t see any great QBs in this draft but LV should take a swing on a QB if one falls to them in rounds 3 or 4. If not, take a swing next year when there is QB talent available. LV has plenty of holes to fill on both sides of the ball as they build a competitive team and shoot for being a legit playoff team in a couple of years.

I think Caroll 's, tenure in Seattle suggests that you should reevaluate your confidence levels on his ability to have a positive impact on the development of the quarterbacks he coaches. And specifically on the quarterback he just traded for.

And, again, Caroll isn't the most interesting offensive coach for the Raiders when it comes to the development of the offense.

?? The coordinator is Chip Kelly
Yes, I don’t get that statement. First, Gruden was very hands on with the offense and his QB's and second Carroll is very hands off, as he is much more a CEO type of HC than running the offense or defense.
Regardless of coaching style we simply should not ignore what an undersized third round draft pick and a eighth year, second round reclamation project accomplished under Carroll and multiple different OCs.

The argument that Carroll isn't a quarterback "guru" or whatever doesn't hold up to the least bit of scrutiny.

LV has plenty of holes to fill on both sides of the ball as they build a competitive team and shoot for being a legit playoff team in a couple of years.
That is the biggest plus for me. The biggest fear I had was some massive trade likely over paying to move up and even if not reaching for a QB at 6. Now we can take the BPA on the board and get another impact player like Bowers. That is how you build a team, not continually chasing/wasting picks to fix your QB problem. If the BPA is a QB, so be it... but that isn't the case this year. I would potentially be good with a trade down too depending on who is still on the board, what we get and how far we went down.

Carroll is not Gruden in terms of influence on QB success in the passing game.
?? The coordinator is Chip Kelly

And he works for and takes direction from Carroll.

This tangent began when someone referenced Goff, implying that because Goff improved significantly after being traded that Geno will or could as well. That is apples and oranges.

And someone also referenced Gannon. Again, different situation.

If you guys expect some kind of big improvement from Geno under Chip and Carroll, I will agree to disagree.
