2025 Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ 2025 verion of "Our QB better stay healthy" ☠ (5 Viewers)

Pulled from X: BREAKING: The #Raiders and QB Geno Smith have agreed to a 2-year, 85.5M with 66.5M Guaranteed contract extension, multiple sources tell @NFLonFOX.

Also pulled from X: 85.5M in addition to the 31M this year brings it fully to 3 years/116M at a 38.33M average (16th paid QB)

I think that is a good contract. He has a decent floor and good side up of upside. A veteran but not too old.

Based on initial details of the contract available, I agree. He was going to get paid. This doesn't break the Raiders and gets the need to have him extended out of the way. On to the next on the to-do list for Spytek

That sounds about right.

Devil is in the details but I'm hoping the Raiders have a solid out after two years (maybe even one. I believe that is the reality of Sam Darnold 's contract).

Thought just popped in my head: if the Raiders draft Jeanty at 1.6 it’s a strong indication that Carroll et al think we can be competitive quickly. So if they draft him, I’ll take it as a vote of confidence in their plan and vision of the current team.
With a healthy amount of 🤞🤞🤞

There’s that damn offseason optimism again! Ugh.

Did you see morks comment? It’s his favorite of year, they’re undefeated!

Optimism reigns!!! 0 and 0 record, baby!

I want to see deets, but guessing mean Gene's deal is really 2yrs/$66MM guaranteed, then a 3rd yr team option.

I'm good if so.

I 100% guarantee the stated terms are exaggerated by Geno's agent.

But, even if every nickel was fully guaranteed, getting Geno for the QB16 salary, which will easily be QB20+ in two years, is a great deal.

Even if he flops this contract does not look like a cap killer and doesn't prohibit effective roster management going forward.

This is my guess as well. "Guarantees" 2025 (which we all know he was going to make regardless) and then $35M in 2026 with incentives (he made like $5M in incentives in 2024). 2027 non-guaranteed. We were committed for 2025 already anyway, and 2026 is at worst an overpriced veteran backup to a breakout rookie - nice problem to have.

@DA RAIDERS

27 picks are off the board, if you want to make up for passing in Jeanty, it may be time to see if you can leapfrog the Chiefs and grab a RB.

Couple of potentially RB needy teams in front of pick 2.6

Ditto if you think OL or WR is the BPA ATM.

I’m not well versed in OL at this point in the draft. Got any?

Where do you see them going here?
Chiefs? Offensive line most likely. Possibly WR, it depends on what they really think of the pending Rice suspension. Some people think they could take a RB but I think they are happy with Hunt/Pacheco. I could also see TE but I have no idea about the talent available at that position.

As far as which OL to target... Ask someone who follows those things. I pretty much never look deeper than the potential Raider first round picks.

For RB I think Hampton is still available as is the RB from OSU, I forget his name ATM.

If Hampton is still there take him. He won't make it out of the first round in the real draft though.

Was taken by Washington in that mock

Us. The raiders. I don’t usually refer to the team as mine. :lmao:

Thought you were referring to the Chiefs as that is who i suggested you try to jump in front of.

To snipe an OL from them is a double win IMO.

I’d just stay put and take top rated OL or RB at 2.6 @DA RAIDERS

So one of the Ohio state RBs, or find a list of OL rankings and take the top dude available (I have no clue ;) )
No skattebo? Just the name. Since we seem to fixate on some oddly named player every year.

Like @Chaka , I don't know anything about college football players beyond the ones that are in the range of what the Raiders might do at their 1st round pick. So I'm 5 or 6 players deep in barely-scratching-the-surface-knowledge of a couple of QBs, a WR/CB hybrid, a DE, a WR, an OT, an RB, and maybe a CB ;)

Besides that, I wait for the rookie dynasty rankings to come out post-NFL draft for me to become "smart" about rookies [exceeded winky-face limit for the day]

Skattebo is massively overrated to me. I haven't looked at who's gone but OL that I dream to be there might be, in my order, Booker, Simmons, Connerly, Jackson. Only Donovan Jackson is likely to be there though. RB Henderson by a mile if he's there and none of those OL are.

I keep hoping to read that we've cut Jack Jones but so far the team continues to disappoint me by keeping him on the roster. His attempts at tackling against the Panthers was the worst thing I've seen in a long time
Rapoport is saying that he is getting released.

This seems like the petty "prior regime guy" purge that I always hate. So what if he's not your choice, he's here and he did some good things. That interception in 2023 was one of my top 10 favorite Raider plays ever. We need to not be sending value out the door for free.

Agreed. He can play

I agree he did have some good moments, but he also allowed the most TDs in the league last year and his effort has been questionable at times. Second team to give up on him before his rookie contract is even up so I'll give the new regime the benefit of the doubt on this.

So bench him and see what happens. Our depth still sucks, we lost Hobbs and need players that have some talent that might be able to step in if someone gets hurt. Maybe this lights a fire under him and he steps it up. Maybe not. If his attitude or effort or play level becomes an issue then handle that when it comes up. But you make those decisions in September, December, or when they happen, you don't proactively jettison talent when you are a shambles of a team. It's a terrible move.

Fait point and I don't necessarily disagree. I wonder if Carroll/Spytek spoke to him and didn't like what they were hearing. They are trying to instill a new culture and maybe that's what happened. Pure speculation though.

Jack Jones:

I don't think he was very good last year. From a site called ProFootballRumors

"In his first season as a full-time starter (16 starts, 94% snap share), Jones struggled. In the estimation of Pro Football Focus, he finished as the 102nd-best corner out of 116 qualified players, and he yielded a 62.8% completion percentage and 98.5 QB rating as the nearest defender."

His 2022 with the Patriots was very good. He was the top coverage corner in the NFL through five weeks, according to PFF. He came back to earth, but his PFF grade was a respectable 74.7 before a season-ending injury.

Then there was an altercation with Belichick at the end of the year, a loaded gun on an airplane and subsequent arrest, and in 2023, ineffectiveness and a missed curfew, and Belichick released him.

In 2023, after being released from the Patriots, he was very good for the Raiders and had the Raiders' fourth-highest PFF defensive grade with a 71.6. Crosby, Koonce, and Spillane were the top three.

But then came last year. I wonder why they released him outright and so quickly, but given the off-the-field stuff it makes sense that he wouldn't find any suitors.

I agree, unless there is something we don't know, there is no reason to do this move now. Wait till September and see if anyone goes down in camp, then make a trade.
