2025 Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Live by the Geno, die by the Geno ☠ (17 Viewers)

Also, FACT: Tyree is on pace for 17 sacks.

That's maths.
So nice to see Tyree's preseason success roll over. Koonce had that beautiful strip sack too.

It's a shame Wilkins didn't work out because adding an interior rush would be huge for his D. I hope Tonka or JJ pan out (Both really impressed me in preseason).
Bummer for sure but four sacks from four different DL is great to see. At least for one week it wasn't just the Maxx Crosby show.

I'm really happy Graham has stuck since McDaniels first year. I don't pretend to understand the nuance of it but I believe he runs a complicated system and I hope that continuity pays off.

I liked how the announcers were talking up the stats from the Crosby/Koonce combo from 2 years ago. If Tyree can step up, and the rest are just a solid rotation, we have the makings.

I admit I fast forwarded through chunks of the game (already knew the final score when I was helping out my in laws today) but I thought I saw some plays from our DBs as well. Can anyone give an assessment of their play today?

I swear I'm not trying to write Tyree's HoF induction speech just yet but, yesterday was a promising start.

He played 38 snaps (54%), fwiw Koonce played 32, had 3 combined tackles, 2 solo, 1 sack, 1 TFL and 2 QB hits all team leading (or tied) among the DL. It would be amazing if this kid could become a strong player for the Raiders, even as a rotational guy.

In other defensive news Devin White sure came to play yesterday. Played 100% of the defensive snaps and tallied 8 solo tackles, 11 combined and 1 TFL. Again, if some of these guys we were unsure of, show up to play every week, this unit will surprise people.

Also, who in the world is Kyu Blu Kelly and why does he look like Terry McDaniel out there on the corner? And, not just because of the number. Anyone know how to break down defensive tape? Were the Pats targeting him as a liability or did he just have a great game? Played 100% of the defensive snaps and it seemed like every time I looked up #36 was sticking his nose into the play. Drafted by Baltimore in the 5th in 2023 he didn't even make it out of TC with them, he ended up with Seattle, GB and Was and played a total of 18 defensive snaps that season. Raiders picked him up in 2024 and he didn't do much, 4 games, 14 defensive snaps. Now he's a starting corner playing the full game.

Did he have injuries and that's why he couldn't stick? Can he maintain this level of play?

Pleasantly surprised by play of the defense. I still kinda think we in the Bengals boat, needing to outscore people most weeks, but IF Koonce is back and picks up where he left off, and IF Devin White remembered how to play LB all of a sudden, and IF Tyree has taken a step, and IF their CBs are a pleasant surprise, and if this Booker mystery man is a useful DT, then hey, we might be onto something.

It was the Pats, with not many WR weapons, and a young QB. But it was on the road, and there are a zillion new faces on defense. Communication breakdowns are coming. I expect bad performances. Chargers will be a very good test. If I was the Chargers, I would have to think I could score easily, as long as I avoid obvious passing situations with my backup LT, as Koonce and Maxx are the Raiders best chance of winning on D.

Game Day! (And super quiet in here...)

Sounds like the Raiders will have Roberts back on the field, but JPJ is dealing with a concussion. Last I read (update from Sunday) he had not passed the protocol.

It’s the o-line, plain and simple.

Next Gen Stats
"Geno Smith did not complete any of his 12 pass attempts over 10 yards downfield against the Chargers, throwing three interceptions on those passes.

"He became the only quarterback since 2016 to attempt at least 10 downfield passes in a game without a completion."

No time to throw and always under pressure. I can’t recall a clean pocket for him all night. Embarrassing.

Geno was dogwater too.

Bald Bowser is clear hurt.

And while Jeanty is a rook... He doesn't not look like the legit top ten draft RBs of times past. Too small.
I don’t think Jeanty is the problem. As advertised, the first dude does not bring him down.
Need to commit to the run MORE in order to take the pressure off the pass rush.

Too early to cast meaningful judgment, but Pete is gonna need to be a maestro to get this team to compete against the top half of the NFL.

Defense actually looks half decent, good even, all considered. But offense is filled with schwag from QB to OL to WR. Bald B and Jeanty are the only above replacement level talents, beyond the two TBD rook WRs, and even Jeanty is not fure sure in that category. #RealTalk

I think we all expected this kind of game to show up this year. Geno is who he is, and our team isn't ready to rally when he has a stinker. Our OL is clearly not ready for prime time either. D looks solid, holding a team to 20 should get you around .500 so if the offense can be not a problem we'll win some games. I'm most encouraged with our coaching prospects - Pete is gonna keep their heads in the game, we're getting solid play from veteran castoffs, and if we can develop young guys like we've seen flashes then this franchise can get on a good path.

What would a Raiders season be without some WTF moments though. Brady in the coaching booth with a headset??? Is he just a clown? Is he really going to insert himself here? This is such a bad look.

Full disclosure: I want to hate Brady for soooooo many reasons. I can't yet, at least not from the Raiders' perspective, because there have been a lot of encouraging-ish moves so far, but I'm not going to be able to give him much leeway.

I don't think there was anyone more vocally against bringing Brady in as an owner. Purely because we hatesses him!!!

But, I don't mind him in the booth looking at defensive alignments. There is legitimately a chance that he will pick up on something that others miss.

Torn on Jeanty ATM. I want to see him touch the ball 25 times/game but, it was obvious to everyone that he isn't ready for that. His running looks next level to me but, dude you have to know the play call. You have to identify which blitzer is your responsibility.

Until he figures that out, we can go expect to see Zamir and Laube a lot.

BTW IDK about anyone else but, I thought Laube flashed in his opportunities. Someone in the game thread called him Temu CMC. My new favorite nickname.

Overall, as much as I actually like Jeanty and believe he is the future of the position, as long as the OL plays like it did last night I am going to have trouble forgetting how much I wanted them to take Membou or Banks at #6 and go with a RB in the 2nd.

Speaking of the OL; does anyone who follows real closely have an update on Caleb Rogers and Charles Grant? Two third round OL picks who, AFAIK haven't logged a snap in any capacity this season.

Are they injured? Terrible? What?

(Just to keep digging into the pit of misery…)

And now we get to face the commanders…but, yay!, they might not have their young stud QB….but, uh oh, they might not Raiders have a storied history of making back up QBs have career days against us….and this one is a former Raider, so maybe added incentive to stick it to us.

Oy.

A number of random thoughts:

- The Chargers D looks pretty legit.
- Geno throws into bad coverage far too often. A few times a game, sure. But it seemed like he was throwing into heavy coverage multiple times a game. One could argue that it was great coverage of the Chargers secondary and the Derwin James factor, but he did the same against NE.
- Bowers didn't look like Bowers, but still a force.
- Jeanty had some big rookie mistakes yesterday, not knowing the play call (running to the wrong side of Geno on a hand off), and had trouble picking up the pass rush he was responsible for. The good news is he showed flashes of how dangerous he can be in space, and how he rarely allows the first guy make the tackle.
- Laube looked quick on the series he got at RB. Wonder if Chip continues to work him in. He may just be too buried on this roster to get the opportunities.
- Jakobi looked great imo.
- The D need often over pursued on the outsides of the line leaving the middle of the field completely open. Wonder if that's bad scheme, or players out of position, probably both.
