2025 NFL Coaches on the hot seat & Front Office changes (2 Viewers)

holy crap
Bears coach Matt Eberflus said he is confident he will be coaching the team in Week 14 against the 49ers.

Firing Eberflus mid-season won’t turn around a season that has gone awry for the Bears since their bye week, but it’s a move that most feel could come at any time. Thursday’s clock management gaffe is just the latest in a number of indictments that have built against Eberflus’ coaching acumen over the years, and will be remembered as one of his more infamous moments when he is inevitably let go by the team. Firing Eberflus in mid-season would be more about sending a message than giving the team a tactical advantage over the final five weeks of the season, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if he remained with the team until season’s end.

like an hour and a half later..
Bears fired HC Matt Eberflus.

Eberflus becomes the first head coach in the Bears’ 100-plus year history to be fired mid-season. Less than two hours after saying he was confident he would be coaching the Bears in Week 14’s game against the 49ers, the organization has decided to pull the plug on the embattled head coach after another underwhelming season. Thursday’s clock management gaffe may have been the final straw for Eberflus, who was already on the hot seat to start the season. A former defensive coordinator turned head coach in 2022, the Bears’ defense showed steady improvement under Eberflus’ watch, and currently ranks ninth in points allowed per game. Unfortunately, the team never figured out it’s offensive identity, ranking 20th or worse in yards per game in each of the last three seasons. The hiring and firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in the same season was another indictment on Eberflus’ inability to get the right people in the building to propel the Bears into the right direction. Eberflus leaves the Bears with a 14-32 record while in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will now takeover as the Bears’ interim head coach for the remaining five weeks of the season, as the team prepares for yet another head coaching search this offseason.
The reason I'm losing my mind is they fired him after his Zoom call with the media, got dayum that's an extra layer of "git the F out!"

:lmao: let’s let him embarrass himself ONE MORE TIME before we pull the plug.

Yeah, don't blame your players when you have a proven track record of making horrible decisions. He was making these same mistakes pre-Caleb Williams. And maybe his players are screwing it up to a certain extent. But isn't that what coaches are supposed to do ... have players and assistant coaches prepared.

I can't believe they are rolling in the OC as the interim coach. The same one that is involved with them burning a TO with 43 seconds left during a dead ball. The same one that took 20 seconds to call a play with 27 seconds on the clock. They have already written this guys pink slip for game 17.

Bengals - I think the obvious compromise is Taylor is going to have to scape goat Lou Anarumo. You can argue all you want about how much it is or isn't his fault, but the defense has been historically bad for 2 seasons. Taylor would be missed badly as a play caller and we really have never seen a HC get demoted, but stay in a different role. He's going to have to just cut ties with the DC to stay IMO.

If Ryan Poles keeps his GM job in Chicago after last night, he owns nudes of Virginia McCaskey. Chixago isn't the worst team, but had the worst season based on expectations. The Jets can stake a claim also.

I honestly don't understand firing a coach at any point in the season unless 1) the team could make the playoffs with a change, 2) you think the next coach is on the staff, or 3) the team is such a shi+sh@w that it's impossible not to bring up an interim coach. Nobody is really in that situation. Even the lowly NYG and JAX. Just ride it out and make a move offseason. Rare are the seasons where a coaching change gets a team to the playoffs. It's too short of a season.

It was then that he knew the former Patriot first-round pick would be handed the keys to what, up until a few years ago, was simply the best franchise in the sport. Instead, impaired by a rotten roster, penny-pinching ownership, and his own missteps, Mayo couldn't navigate this challenging year. bostonsportsjournal.com/2025/01/05/gia…

Mayo the first one fired (that wasn't fired in season).
surprising.. Thought they give him one more season.
I wonder if the win knocking them out of the first pick had any influence.

Otherwise, I don't think Mayo made them better at all. Maybe they have a deal with Vrabel coming.
I would bet heavily on Vrabel
Same - as per the bolded, it was a pretty abrupt termination after the game and certainly could be there was some sort of conversation already going on with Vrabel. He's not currently employed, so no concerns about tampering.

Draftkings had a betting list of "next coach hired" odds up to this morning when it was taken down. Maybe something is imminent.

NE had a pre-written press release that they distributed when the game was over. They had already made their decision and the final game didn’t make any difference.

Vrabel indicated he was interested. I have to wonder how interested the Patriots are, as they could have signed him last year (and have the Titans pick up most of his salary). The Pats would have to have bought out Mayo then, but they have to do that now anyway.

I wonder if they felt they needed to honor the agreement with Mayo first whether through sticking to their word or fear of backlash should they renig on a deal with a minority coach.

Doug Pederson fired.
Yep just saw that. Least shocking one. I think Doug might catch on to a team as an assistant to the regional manager as a favor from a friend but his days as head coach are probably over.
If the Jags don't fire their GM, they will have to settle for bottom of the barrel coaching candidates.
This is right. Unprovens or retreads.....Pete Carroll would fit right in to the land of the early bird special. Ron Rivera? The Tampa OC?

He was dreadful
To be fair to Mayo, he never should have been the head coach to begin with (and they gave him very little talent to work with). Having a rookie head coach with every secondary coach in roles they never were in before was not the best of moves by NE. The Pats were in a tough spot, as no one wanted any of the jobs they had available. Either guys refused their calls, or they spoke with / interviewed them and they all declined. I mentioned in another thread that they probably should have let BB play out his contract, take that entire year to put together a better succession plan than Mayo, and save a wasted year of a lame duck coaching staff that was there as a bridge the gap until the next staff for 2025. NE needs to move on from other people . . . let's see if they actually do it.

I think Daboll is a good coach. Schoen seems to be the one that needs to be fired. That being said its hard to fire a GM and not the coach because he would want to be bring his own guy in. I think it makes sense to give this regime a chance at bringing in their own QB (remember they inherited Jones and subsequently made the mistake to extend him after he won a playoff game).

By running it back, I think it's unlikely that they'll roll right away with Ward/Sanders if they wind up drafting one them. Schoen/Daboll are assuredly on the hot seat and they probably can't wait for a rookie to blossom. Maybe they get a bridge guy of their own - who that is, I have no idea though.

The Bears will be dumb if they don't bring in an offensive minded HC to help Caleb take a step forward.
Bears have requested interviews with Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.
