Not a Catholic or religious at all, but these conclaves have always fascinated me. I wonder what politics and drama might be happening behind the scenes. Watching movies like Godfather 3 and the recent Conclave makes me even more curious. I secretly wish for a 3 year long conclave like back in the 1200s.

so, i just put on yttv and got cbs 2 live at the vatican. maybe it was nora o’donnell? who said its around 5:55p and beginning to encroach on dinner time for the cardinals. not to be a snob, but dinner here for locals is around 8p on average. i saw them interviewing an american couple…..no way i am not going to be on TV this weekend. gotta come up with a tv name though and sneak in footballguys somehow. maybe i reference my pastor bryant. i could be john smoo. endless possibilities. i’ll be in rome around 1p local time friday until around 1p local monday. would love to get a new pope friday-saturday and maybe a sunday 12p apartment angelus.

lol omg yes. the conclave process shukes me, but it’s their shtick for hundreds of years?

i’d bet on gates being the next pope?

Maybe the support for Pizzaballa is a ploy to motivate Tatum Bell.

William Hill odds:

Pietro Parolin – 12/5
Luis Antonio Tagle – 11/4
Matteo Zuppi – 4/1
Peter Turkson – 5/1
Pierbattista Pizzaballa – 6/1
Peter Erdo – 8/1
Robert Sarah – 14/1

William Hill odds:

Luis Antonio Tagle – 11/4
Matteo Zuppi – 4/1
Peter Turkson – 5/1
Pierbattista Pizzaballa – 6/1
Peter Erdo – 8/1
Robert Sarah – 14/1

Given the Henry VIII thing not sure I'd go with odds from a British Book. Though I will predict it will be someone not on this board and that it will happen in round 9.

Besides too many gray candidates for me to bet on this 🐴

Not even Crosseyed? I think he has an outside chance as a dark horse. ;)

Where does the Pope rank among influential/impactful/powerful "offices" on the world stage?

Interesting question. And as a non Catholic, I don't know I'm very qualified to answer. But I'd guess it has to be way up there right?

Maybe leader of 4-5 most powerful countries and then the Pope? Federal Reserve Chair. CEO's of largest Social Media Networks would be way up there with CEOs of largest media companies, especially newer platforms like YouTube and Spotify.

Yeah, my guess is he's way up there. I was wondering if he's even #2 just behind the US President. I wonder if throughout history if it's basically "Leader of the most powerful nation" and then the Pope. But maybe that's too high.

Interesting thought to put social media CEOs up there, too.

I think everyone is qualified to answer because it's a question about the political influence of the Pope moreso than anything specific to his religious significance.

I also think it depends on the pope and the geopolitical climate. John XXIII (I assume?), JP II, and Francis were all very influential on the world stage (JP II probably most of all). Benedict the XVI much less so I think. I'm no student of history but I bet there were popes who were #1 and there were popes who weren't influential at all, depending on circumstances.

If the movie Conclave is to be believed, they mentioned that whoever is elected will instantly become the most famous man in the world.
I wouldn't guess it's quite to that level, but top 10 for sure. I couldn't even tell you the previous pope's name (his real name), just Pope Francis...

Top ten for sure.

Also, it's so hard to refrain from making a joke about a recent Twitter post with [omitted political figure] superimposed as the Pope...

i hope they get a pope in the mold of francis we need a whole helluva lot more of that kinda guy in the world take that to the bank brochachos

As a confirmed Catholic I massively disagree and think that liberation theology is a nightmare. He was a disaster for philosophical doctrine and tradition. You might see his love of the poor but his situational ethics (relativism vs. truth) and borderline communist economics (his anti-production and MMT economic adviser) were and are a disaster and a loser proposition for the Church. His absolutism about immigration might cost Vatican City its own character, never mind the countries he administered to.

Worst Pope since Pius XII in WWII

And you can’t take him to the bank because he didn’t believe in banks, brohan.

Just for fun off the top of my head. I wonder if I get any of the spellings right...

Jorge Brogolio
Cardinal Ratzinger
Karol Wotywa

ps: Josef I think was Ratzinger's first name

Archbishop Wozniak should have been elected in that movie. Easily the best character.

I didn't mean to limit my question to political influence, but that's obviously a big part of it. I think the religious influence is also a huge factor in some formula of total influence.

And, definitely, one Pope will have more influence than another one. Just like one President might end up with more influence than another one. That's why I asked more about the office than the individual. The office of the Pope seems to have a ton of influence potential. It's then another question how much, and how, a particular Pope uses that.

When you are talking about the power of the Pope I think it's harder to gauge against World leaders because while the Pope certainly weighs in when he feels the need, it's not his central focus. I think we all know the position has immense power but it's not wielded the way we traditionally view World leaders wielding their power. Maybe it's more behind the scenes that I'm just not aware of. I don't really follow the Pope's positions on world topics. Not sure that makes any sense to anyone other than the voices in my head :loco:

Every time I see the words Papal Conclave together it sounds like something my wife would try and tell me after her yearly doctor appointment:

"hey honey, my papal conclave was normal today."

Me with fingers in my ears "lalalalala i can't hear you don't talk about stuff like that to me lalalalalala....."
