2025 Papal Conclave - UPDATE: **POPE LEO XIV - First American Pope** (4 Viewers)

Most Americans reject Catholicism
Isn't Christianity and all it's sub denominations out numbering the folks going to Sunday Morning mass in America?

-I get it that the Catholic Church has done a lot of wrong and hoping that an American Pope can tap into the $$$ train here
"Spotlight" in 2015, America has spoken already

I don't see how an American Pope really helps the Catholic Church and they still elected an old man at 69. How about a pope closer to 50 that can relate?
Feels also like they are somehow trying to please a certain leader that i won't name but likes to broadcast photos of himself in Pope apparel

I read an article speculating that cardinals might think he was too young.

As a Catholic - I am not at all interested in Pope Leo's nationality, but mostly concerned with the direction and mission of the church. As I said earlier, and having listened to him now, I think the Church will continue on the right path - with open arms for all, and a mission to try to bridge divides and bring people together.

🙏

taking leo as his name is important leo 13 was known as being decidedly on the side of the poor and those who needed help i am hearing that 14 will be a continuation of francises reforms but not a carbon copy and that 14 is more moderate and a consensus builder also a cubs fan from the south side so hes tough or crazy take that to the bank brohans

How about a pope closer to 50 that can relate?
This made me curious if there were many cardinals at that age. Apparently only 15 cardinals under the age of 60. And only 1 under that age of 50. Definitely limited selection in that age range.

The rare demographic that skews older and more male than the FFA

reading some speculation that an american pope is a direct message that the guy many think of as a religious leader is not the voice of chrisitianity in the americas take that to the bank brohans
That seems like a very short sighted perspective given the length of terms of spiritual leaders vs the average reign of a pope.
thats what i said just above take that to the bank brohan

He brings u an interesting POV that I hadn't thought of
Evangelical Christians have changed the dynamics in this country
Look at Joel Osteen, here's a guy like him or not that is killing it as far as making money and keeping the doors wide open (except in major storms)
I think the Catholic Church wants a bigger piece of the action...now when I attended Catholic Church when I was in school we had progressive music
There were traditional Catholic Churches where they just had an organ and not much else, maybe a choir for one of the masses.

The ones we went to and sometimes had to pass other Catholic Churches along the way, they had a guitar player leading everyone at the front of the church, back up vocals, other instruments like percussion, bass guitar and other acoustic guitars and keyboards to make for some real music and we enjoyed ourselves even if the lecture was boring or in between "Our Father in Heaven"
I played bass guitar in the church throughout HS and it kept me awake thru mass.

Those churches are hard to find that are Catholic, but they are everywhere for say Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, too many to list
The Catholic Church needs an enema and a full blood transfusion to make waves and expand the brand

69 is a nice age for a Pope. There was no way they would pick someone 50 (there may be like one Cardinal that young) as they would effectively picking a Pope that would be in office until like 2057.

As for the pope apparel guy part I think to any extent it is the opposite of that actually. But really he has been in Peru for decades and is seen more in global terms than parochial.

It isn't about him being an American it is about approach. Really I think it is more like they elected a Pope who happens to have been born in America.

If even a Packmigo like @SWC can be excited about a Bear fan Pope I can say I am good with the choice (though I wish he was a White Sox fan instead of Cubs)

Looks like a mixed bag Pope. He’s pro immigration but against the western media’s portrayal of certain lifestyles and views it as being at odds with the Gospel .

Maybe we get a North American Pope tour with Pope Leo

Another thing that really irks me about the news coverage of the Pope is the BS look to everyone as if they truly care
They are cashing in hoping folks will stay glued when most of the time these networks are bashing religion
Christianity in this country specifically has to swallow an awful lot from the media and its just widely accepted
Then suddenly the media cozies up to the Pope and Catholics as if they are good friends all the sudden

BTW: Does anyone that is Christian outside of Catholicism give 2 spits about who the Pope is?
Does Joel Osteen ever mention his name during the weekly pep rally?
Did the Pope do anything in the last 5-10 years that had any impact on modern society in America?
What power do they actually have any more outside of holding everyone hostage while they Conclave?

Pretty sure I heard a comedian (can't remember which) talk about this years ago (with regard to another Pope), but I'm always amused by the idea that there are going to be a bunch of guys who grew up in Chicago who are telling their friends and family right now "I went to high school with that guy. What a !@#$%"

Thanks this is gives a lot of great background.

I've already seen a picture of a friend's aunt with the new pope when they were school children at St. Mary's. Apparently my friend was also baptized there. And one of my coworkers grew up in that same town and even went to the same church growing up that the pope attended as a kid.
