2nd Official Free For All Chess Tournament- Green & Gold= Champion (1 Viewer)

otello has played this endgame remarkably well. If that was all instinct, we have a Capablanca on our hands.
To be honest, I use the analyze game feature to play out every possible permutation I can think of (my skill level limits me in this regard, obviously). I measured this set of moves several times to queen my pawn before starting the process. OTB, it would be very difficult for me to process that many variables.

Wait - so folks aren't just playing the games themselves but rather utilizing other programs to help them determine the best move to make in the game?

I believe he's referring to the analyze game feature within the Chess Time app. Basically just a free board where you can move pieces without it impacting the game.I use this occasionally to help see how things will look a few moves ahead. If this is frowned upon I will stop.

ETA: The Analyze Game feature doesn't give advice or make any recommendations.

No- he meant he did that AFTER the game was over- right Otello? Please tell us you didn't use a program to analyze your moves during the game? Because that would be cheating, of course...

No, it's ok to use a free board, IMO. So long as you're not getting advice.

This would explain why we've had a game going for a month now and we've only finished like 10 moves. I tend to take awhile analyzing moves too.

My problem with the analyze game feature though is that it doesn't limit you to legal moves. I've done some analyses where I've totally missed that someone was in check for like 3 moves :bag: . I have another site that I use on my laptop to play around with rather than using the analyze game feature, when possible.

Wasn't even aware that feature existing within the app. If that's all it is (and it doesn't offer suggestions), I don't think there's a problem with that. My initial read on that was something very different. Sorry for the confusion!

Yes, it's a free board right within the app. Click on "action" and then "analyze game" and it takes you to a board where you can play around with the current position. It does not render advice. I use it from time to time as well.

You are right about the legal moves.

I am just using the analyze game feature, which is not the best.

I am opposed to using the analyze move feature. I think we should treat this like 2 guys sitting down to play a game of chess. You don't usually have a second board available for analysis.

Not a huge deal, but I guess we should have an official ruling

Technically what you guys are doing is the modern version of correspondence chess. That type of chess allows for using opening books/databases and moving the pieces however you'd like to help you analyze the game. Since the majority of you wouldn't know that one way or the other, I wouldn't have done it myself, but that needs to be clarified at the outset of the tourney IMO.

As long as I still lose, is everyone good with me starting to cheat? I figure it will make for more of a challenge.

I need to apologize to psyhopav - I've been in Vegas all week and made like one move a day and then played fast while watching a keynote. I suck and he rightfully kicked my ### but it probably wasn't very fun for him.

I had no idea this was frowned upon. I've always fooled around with the analysis board in correspondence games going back to the FBG chesshere teams days. Never even crossed my mind. It's a resource available to everybody....

I don't see any problem with using the analyze feature so long as no advice is given. But if other people object, we won't do it.

My issue with this is that it's NOT the same as two guys sitting down to play chess. It can take a full day sometimes before an opponent takes their turn. For me personally the free board often helps me get back on track with what I was planning to do.

so is the interweb...

True. And the point about correspondence chess is also true. I guess I'm ok with it, but we need to make sure everyone knows. I had no idea this even existed.

Agreed

Also, the game lets you touch a piece without requiring you to move that piece; whereas OTB, you would need to move that piece.

Here are USCF's rules of correspondence chess so you guys know.

3. You may consult chess books and periodicals but not

other players. You cannot use a computer or computer program

(chessplaying algorithms) to evaluate a game, but you

may use computers for record keeping and databases.
I had no idea.I'd be okay with outlawing it, if people want. We need an across the board yes/no ruling though.
I think it's too hard to police. I say we allow it but we just have to make sure everyone knows it's ok.

FYI, I wouldn't use any other type of app or GUI to analyze a game in other than the one that comes with Chess Time. The reason being that the Chess Time app will allow you to make illegal moves. Something else that notifies you that your move is illegal because you're in check or something would be "giving advice".

I'll stop using the other one. Only reason I use it is because it's easier for me to analyze from an internet browser with a mouse than on the ipad/iphone touchscreen.

Does Chess Time have a browser version?

I Skype each of my moves with Baadur Jobava and he either nods in an approving manner or gives me a disappointed look when he does not approve. We don't really talk.

Is this acceptable due to the language barrier?

I endorse the use of the Chess Time analyzer. I think of it as a temporary bridge that allows lower class players to improve their tactics. It's the literal equivalent of setting up a real chess board and allowing one to make hypothetical moves to their heart's content - nothing more, nothing less.

I assume, and safely so I think, that no one is using a chess program. Why bother?

I will also confess that I use chess opening resources, primarily for educational/training purposes. It helps me with recognizing subtleties in complex openings such as the Sicilian defense, and the Ruy Lopez too.

I'll quit doing this if the majority consider this poor form; personally I'm just trying to improve.
