5 reason's 49ers fans should have hope for the off season! (1 Viewer)

While last season was very disappointing for the 49ers, there are many reason's to believe that things will get better next year. I'm going to give you all 5 reason's that you should be excited about the team in the off season and towards next season. The OffenseMike Nolan knows how to pick offensive coordinators.Say what you will about his decision making in game, but if there is one thing that Mike Nolan has proved throughout his time with the 49ers is that he knows how to pick offensive coordinators that will get the best out of the players they are given. Aside from Jeff Hostler (who was a last minute replacement after the chargers waited until the last minute to hire Norv Turner) Mike Nolan has had nothing but success in this area. Mike McCarthy and Norv Turner were both leading their teams into their respective championship games, and seeing as how only 4 coaches get there i think it's amazing that half of them were 49ers offensive coordinators the last 3 years. The hiring of Mike Martz will instantly make everyone on offense a little bit better (if not greatly) and at the very least will make it an interesting season. The Quarterback SituationWe all know the woes of the quarterback situation well being 49ers fans and all, but last year gave us a glimmer of hope with the emergence of Shaun Hill. While it is not set in stone whether he will stay or go, my feelings are that he will stay and compete with Alex Smith and 1 other quarterback for the starting job. This will work out in the fans favor, because Alex Smith will be forced to improve or sit on the bench. Shaun Hill showed tremendous heart and poise in his first 2 starts, and i think most 49ers fans would agree they feel comfortable with him behind center. The addition of Mike Martz will also prove to help both quarterbacks, as he has helped many quarterbacks go from obscurity to the summit of greatness. Also of note, as Eli Manning has shown us this year, it takes time for quarterbacks to develop. This is a promising reason not to just dismiss Alex Smith, even though many of us would like to.The DraftBy now most of you should know that the 49ers traded their first round pick to the New England Patriots to move back into the first round and get Joe Staley. Many people believe that he proved he was worth such a lofty trade and i agree. Time and time again Mike Nolan and Scott McCloughen have proved that they have what it takes when it comes to evaluating talent through the draft. Say what you will about picking Alex Smith with the first overall pick, in that same draft they got Frank Gore in the 3rd round. Vernon Davis might be a bust? How about drafting perfectly capable players later on in that same draft like Micheal Robinson (4th round) Parys Haralson (5th round) and Delanie Walker (6th round). We all know of the success of Patrick Willis and Joe Staley. Also, the 49ers have the Indianapolis Colt's first round pick this year (29th overall) and we know how Mike Nolan loves trading up in the first round. If this year is the same, look for the 49ers to be very productive in the draft. Free AgencyWhile the 49ers have been notorious under Mike Nolan for not being able to get a quality number 1 receiver, that can hardly be blamed all on him. The production (or lack thereof) of the quarterback has lot to do with that as well. The addition of Nate Clements (while overpriced) and Michael Lewis helped the defense significantly. There also are rumors that the 49ers might go after Lance Briggs or Bernard Berrian. The 49ers have a significant amount of cap room left (around 20 million) and I expect them to be minor players in this years free agency, adding one or two big names and a few quality players as well. Patrick WillisIt was a joy to watch Patrick Willis grow as a player. Towards the end of the year when most rookies are hitting the wall, Patrick Willis was actually getting better. They started unleashing him on the opposing quarterback more, and he responded with hurries, sacks, and turnovers. Also, Mike Singletary appears to be out of the running for the open head coaching positions, which means he will most likely be around to further his teaching of Patrick Willis. Add the return of Manny Lawson and the possible addition of people like Lance Briggs in free agency and you have the recipe for the 49ers defense to have a monster year.

Nolan has a history of success at the draft?

They're unable to land a #1 wr in as a FA? Who have they tried to go after but been unable to snag?

Staley was worth a top five selection?

Some decent stuff in there but don't quit your day job.

Antonio Bryant FAIL Darryl Jackson FAIL as wide receivers brought in in FA to be

the number 1 spot, none of them being able to produce even close to one, both got in free agency.

Staley was not worth a top 5 selection, (the 49ers traded the 7th overall not top 5) but he was worth where they traded up to grab him in the draft.

Mike Nolan does have a history of success in the draft, who else has gotten the quality of players they have in the last few years later rounds (frank gore 3rd round = amazing choice) and for success in the draft, see PATRICK WILLIS

DJax was not brought in as a FA. Antonio Bryant was expected to accomplish more than he did, but he wasn't expected to be some kind of SF saivor...At the time, nobody expected the Niners to have a lousy a season as they did, so I agree the Staley trade was a good one-only with hindsight do we regret that move.Frank Gore and Patrick Willis - two great picks and you love his drafting ability? Don't get me wrong, those are fantastic selections but imo it's still too early to judge his drafting talents. When they become like the Colts/Steelers/Patriots in regard to an obscene % of their active players being acquired via the draft, THEN I'll agree he's remarkable.

the thing about it is its just focusing on the positives, you can positively look at his drafting and say that he has done well. And as for Staley, he is worth it because after a year he has proven that he can take every snap on the line and he had solid play all year long. No one can say that about the number 7 draft pick next year, because no one knows who they are or whether or not they will do anything well. How many first round busts have you seen over the years?

as for the number 1 WR, the article says "Free Agency

While the 49ers have been notorious under Mike Nolan for not being able to get a quality number 1 receiver"

so you think mike nolan HAS gotten a quality number 1 receiver!?

anyways thanks for having this debate! its fun

He's seriously reaching. "Mike Nolan knows how to pick offensive coordinators"? Is that why the offense has ranked #32, #26, and #32 in his three years there? Shaun Hill? Pretty much the only bright spot is Patrick Willis.

Wow. Nicest thing I can say, fellow Niner fan, is that every point you make is highly debatable.

I agree with the resident niner-hater; you are reaching dude.

Norv Turner leaving us last year at the last possible second was the worse thing that happened to this team last season. Hostler had no experience being an offensive coordinator and we had no chance of having a productive season because of it. .

I think Alex Smith gets a bad rap because of what happened last season. He led to team to a 2-1 record, got injured, and then was rushed back by Nolan and the situation went all to hell when it apparent he was nowhere near 100 percent. He is still a young QB and I haven't given up on him as so many other fans have. I pray he can stay healthy and thrive in the Mike Martz system.

Defense was definitely more improved, it just didn't show because they were usually on the field the whole game because of our anemic offense

Patrick Willis will be a stud for the next decade.

I actually think the McNolan drafts have been above average, grabbing great players in the early rounds and getting some good players and depth in the later rounds. I think they will be unfairly judged for the Alex Smith pick if doesn't produce more in the near future, but they have made some solid drafts.

Frank Gore in the 3rd was a risky pick (note: surgery to both knees). The 49ers had no choice but to gamble on him. The idea was if he pans out great, if not, well they sucked any ways.

How was it a risky pick if they had nothing lose to begin with? I realize he had two knee surgeries, but this guy was number one on the depth chart in Miami ahead of McGahee and Portis, so it was obvious that he had talent and was worth picking at that slot. Turns out to be one of the steals of that draft.

It was not a steal...it was a gamble. Everybody knows he has tons of talent, but they were not sure if the pick will not be wasted.

When they picked, it was a gamble. But, gambles pay off sometimes, and this one did. There is no such thing as "steal of the draft" until we see what the players do. Gore in the 3rd, after seeing what he does = SOD.

The article says Nolan is great at choosing OC's. He doesn't seem to be very good at retaining them though. Does anyone know if Martz is biding his time for another head coaching job, or will he stick around long enough for the Niner's to build continuity?

<hoping for the best this year.>
