80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

9.Whatever -- Take Your Time (Do It Right) -- S.O.S. Band (1 Hit Wonder)

Pretty typical soul/dance jam of the early 80s. Still had that tendency to turn a 3 minute song into a 7 minute song, which means it probably lasts longer than all the guys trying to take the song's advice. I still dig it, and since I got sniped on the Gap Band (now I can't tell my story about how that song is always playing when I visit Ben's Chili Bowl), I'll go with this.
That was on my very short list.

Wait... when did the Gap Band get picked?

No more. I promise. 80's, I thought, would be my weakest decade, so I didn't join. Ugh. My bad. Much love to y'all.
No problem! Join me in waiting until the draft is over and then making an even better '80s playlist using only songs that went undrafted.

Show these guys how it's done. :bowtie:

Visiting D.C. in June. Is Ben's really worth the effort?

You Americans get every episode of Bob's Burgers, The Wonder Years, Peep Show, Cheers, Law & Order etc.. on Netflix?!!

VPN set up, have access to spotify, have no idea how to use it

Not much effort.. just don't make eye contact

Nice work Novo, welcome to the first world!

How do I find people to follow on spotify?
Here's my playlist for this !mine so you should be able to get my profile from there. I'll IM you with a couple other people around here I follow, all B&M info so I'm not going to post it up here

It's easier if you're integrated with Facebook.. but it's still a pain in the balls to find people

OK, last question (for now), when I plug my iPod in, Spotify wants to sync with it, but says I need to backup first? I use my iPod as my hard drive for music (120 GB's worth of stuff) so I'm terrified of losing anything, do I want to sync it?

I don't know, I've never backed up or had any issues syncing spotify but it seems weird they tell you to back up the whole device

Spotify can also index the tracks on your computer. I found this to be pretty useless personally but your mileage may vary. You can disable it in Spotify preferences.

SOS Band was one of the groups that I was surprised was a one hit wonder. They had a lot of songs on the R&B charts but only crossed over once.

Just Be Good to Me has been sampled a lot. I would have used Beats International's remake but it came out in Feb 1990.

Yeah I have one folder where I keep stuff for spotify, and just tell it to worry about that one. I can't imagine it would try to take over your whole ipod so they're probably just saying to back up as good practice.. but I'm not sure.

9.12 - Like Flames, Berlin (New Wave)

The Youtube version isn't the best but it'll do for now. Terri Nunn is awesome. Hard to pick this song over another Berlin favorite...but oh well.

Moved "Don't Change" to Ahead of its time.

So uh, is that VPN thing safe and easy to set up for a computer layman?
I'm on the free trial of unblock-us.com, then it becomes $5/month. Apparently it's completely legal and it only took me about 10 minutes to set up (using a Bell 2wire wireless modem/router)

I'm not sure, by the time it's done, that all the songs I would have taken won't have already been taken.

But I'm always interested in seeing the songs picked, if not for discovery at the most, then nostalgia at the least.

I don't think I"m the only one in the draft taking stuff that's not the usual songs from the usual bands ("usual" to me, at least). There's a lot of 80s "standards" that just aren't being drafted- which I'm pretty happy about. I think we've done enough of these to move on past the same old, same old.

But I'm looking forward to seeing anybody else's lists- I know I'm leaving a lot of my draft-list undrafted.

9.X: Ghost Town- The Specials (UK #1)

I was in the UK when this song was huge there- kept hearing it everywhere. Young teen me wasn't quite sure what to make of it (first exposure to ska), but I knew I liked it.

Man... I listened through a bunch of songs from this category last night- woof. Also surprised to learn how many #1s the Jam had- and prefer one of theirs to this, but seems like the Jam are pretty well represented so far in the overall draft, so I'll throw some ska out there. Will lead in pretty well to my next pick, if I'm still in the mood to take it tomorrow.

No doubt. And see, I would have taken the Specials somewhere.

Ghost Town is an awesome song.

Best song in the category IMO. I would have picked it and figured out a way to work it into the mix except I drafted it the last time we did the 80s (sans categories).

Good stuff. The Specials 1st album is in my top 10 faves

When trying to pick my 1 hit wonder most gravitated around Holly Knight

Animotion - Obsession

Scandal - The Warrior

Device - Hanging on a Heart Attack

Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything

In checking I realised that Animotion had 2 other top 40 hits, the god awful Let Him Go and with an entirely new lineup Room to Move made the top 10.

In an incestuous move Animotions singer for this was none other than Devices lead singer Paul Engemann

Rob Fisher from Climie Fisher originally wrote Room to Move and had also been involved with Naked Eyes (Always there to Remind Me cover)

In looking at Climie Fisher I rediscovered a nice song from the late 80s which fills a big hole in another category.

One hit Wonder will have to wait. This is a brilliant remix of a nice soft ballad.

For now

9:10 - Climie Fisher - Rise to the Occasion (Hip Hop Mix) - 4:15 - Hip Hop/Rap

I was surprised that Scandal was a one hit wonder but upon further review, they had two songs that topped out at #41. Mrs. McEnroe had a #2 hit as a solo artist though.

Sorry I haven't been around. Completely stumped on Wannabe 80's and Ahead of their time, so I'm sticking to my mainstream goodness...

8.11 One Way or Another - Blondie - Punk/Post-Punk

http://youtu.be/KXewIR7Y7cc

:nerd: :penalty:

isn't this from Parallel Lines? '78 maybe '79?
Parallel Lines was released in '78, this song was released in '79.
I really stink at this. I thought I looked it up and thought I saw 1980.

Trying again...

Bad Reputation, Joan Jett, Punk - released 1981

Nice pick, I considered choosing this tune for the same reason (add some ska sound besides the Op Ivy ska-punk) but I just don't like this song as much as probably a dozen or so of their other hits.

Nice for the category. Think of Freaks and Geeks now when I hear this.
