OK, last question (for now), when I plug my iPod in, Spotify wants to sync with it, but says I need to backup first? I use my iPod as my hard drive for music (120 GB's worth of stuff) so I'm terrified of losing anything, do I want to sync it?
I don't know, I've never backed up or had any issues syncing spotify but it seems weird they tell you to back up the whole device
I was way overdue to backup all my stuff anyway, so this whole spotify thing led me to doing an iPod dump to my external drive, started it at 6 PM, it finished after 1 AM. Still wondering what happens tomorrow if I let spotify sync. Reading on the net it leads me to believe if I sync my iPod with spotify, disconnect then resync with iTunes, I lose everything on the iPod, if that's the case I'll just use the spotify web app and stick with iTunes for desktop.Stuff like this thread terrifies me http://community.spotify.com/t5/Newcomers-and-Contribution/ipod-sync-deleted-music/td-p/566678?nobounce

Sorry I haven't been around. Completely stumped on Wannabe 80's and Ahead of their time, so I'm sticking to my mainstream goodness...

8.11 One Way or Another - Blondie - Punk/Post-Punk

http://youtu.be/KXewIR7Y7cc

:nerd: :penalty:

isn't this from Parallel Lines? '78 maybe '79?
Parallel Lines was released in '78, this song was released in '79.
I really stink at this. I thought I looked it up and thought I saw 1980.

Trying again...

Bad Reputation, Joan Jett, Punk - released 1981

Nice for the category. Think of Freaks and Geeks now when I hear this.
Dammit. Totally forgot about her... love her and love the pick.

Ok, let's tackle our non US/UK pick. What do you do when Spotify has no AC/DC? How about taking a Swiss band doing a song that sounds like it should be the B-Side to Highway to Hell?

10.2 -- Eat the Rich -- Krokus (Non-US/UK)
The spotify thing is interesting, I have to decide what I'm going to do for metal/hair metal since a certain band only has their recent (ridiculous) "soundtrack" and re recorded versions of a couple hits on there.

10.08 - Radar Love, White Lion (Cover Song)

This one was difficult because I think White Lion has both the 80's best cover song and best "hair band" song.

But since there's more good hair/metal songs than there are cover songs (IMO) I'll go with this.

This is the song I use to blast out a bad song that's stuck in my head. Those opening guitar chords are awesome.

And it's superior to the original in every...single...way.

10.5: GARY NUMAN - CARS (ONE HIT WONDER)
Thought about this for new wave - when I got off the bus and went to my grandmother's house in the afternoon she would turn on the radio while I did my homework (3rd or 4th grade?) and this song must have been heavy in the playlist because it always was on and she would comment on what a silly little song it was yet "so catchy"...

dammit just noticed release date/popularity differential on that pick. I assume I will have to repick.
pretty sure it hit #1 in the 80s- at least that what I saw when looking into draft research.

eta: sorry- meant that it peaked in 1980 (at #9). Not sure how this should be ruled.

I will keep it unless there is a big uproar. like you said, I saw it on a couple lists while doing research, so I guess it was more on when it became a hit.

10.12 Michael Jackson -

Caravan of Love isn't on Spotify.

The Housemartins' catalog is a perfect illustration of what's sometimes maddening about Spotify. There are three different versions of their debut album with slightly different demos and live bonus material. But their second album , greatest hits collection and only UK #1 single are all missing. The inconsistency is bizarre. All their material was originally released on the same label. I thought it might have had something to do with songwriter licensing but their second album has all original songs.

There's a song I wanted to take that has two Greatest hits compilations with every single song on both albums available, except the one I was going to take, which is greyed out.

There are other songs from the same original album on the greatest hits available... I don't get it.

10.xx Rip it Up - Orange Juice (post-punk)

I don't know what post-punk means but this Glasgow band always gets labelled as such. To my ears, the song really doesn't sound like what post-punk should be. It has early 80s synths, R&B rhythms and Edwyn Collins' very unpunk vocals. If my provisional mix doesn't get sniped, I'll end up moving this to a different category but I picked it as post-punk to show how broad the definition is.

Mrs eephus and I went to a high school fundraiser last night. If I'd have known the Badgers were going to be playing an Elite Eight game at the time, I would have been able to think of an excuse to skip it. For dancing after dinner, they brought out the usual guy from the Bad DJs Union. He played by the book (e.g. Old Time Rock n Roll, Blurred Lines, Celebrate) but threw in one Yaz song for some reason. It pretty much cleared the dance floor except for us and a few other couples.

Fortunately, Mrs eephus didn't punch anyone but we're going to see the Mavericks tonight so there's still a chance.

Sorry I'm so far behind. I've been mostly offline since Thursday. I'll try to catch up during the elite 8 games tonight. I'm further behind on yard work so that comes first.

I'm going to cheat slightly on the One Hit Wonder category. This song peaked at #43, but it did hang around for 23 weeks on the chart and they made it to **** Clark's Great American Bandstand. Plus, they released a DVD that is subtitled "ANATOMY OF A ONE-HIT WONDER", detailing how their one hit got them signed to Elektra records. They're probably "THE" Canadian one hit wonder, plus this song rocks so...

10.13 - This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide - The Kings

Big fan

Speaking of Parallel Lines before, there is a documentary on the creation of the album tonight at 7pm EST - on some channel called the Smithsonian Channel.

10.16 If You Don't Know Me By Now - Simply Red - Cover

"If You Don't Know Me by Now" is a song written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and recorded by the Philly soul musical group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which became their first hit after being released as a single in 1972 topping the US R&B chart and peaking at number three on the US Pop chart.[1]

The song was originally written for Labelle (a trio led by Patti LaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with "I Miss You" and The Dells passing on it, the song's composers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff gave the song to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which featured Teddy Pendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the song was included on their eponymous debut album.

Patti LaBelle later made the song as part of her concert repertoire in 1982. A live version appears on her 1985 album, Patti.
Here is Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

Ok... so I'm going to continue what I started with the ska pick on Saturday-

I played college soccer with a couple of Jamaican guys who pretty much stuck to themselves. But after expressing an interest in (and very slight knowledge about) Jamaican music, they invited me to one of their parties. Dark, smokey, sweaty, they had this album playing over and over and over again through the whole party- and pretty much everybody was up dancing wherever there was room. As the token white guy there, I had women grinding onto every side of me- including one pushing 2 bills who camped out right in front, her ### locked onto my crotch no mater where I moved. For a suburban white kid, this and the whole experience, was awesome.

As the smoke cleared, the sweat dried and the sun came up, I ran downtown to find this album. That became my own go-to music for every party I had... and it never failed to get everybody on their feet. Spotify, of course, doesn't have it- but theydo have what seems to be the source album for it... even more tunes with more artists (King Jammy's Selections).

Since the album is set up as essentially one track that different artists write their own lyrics and melodies over, it should get a little... repetitive- but somehow doesn't. As such, I could pick just about any song from it, but will go with the guy who arguably had the biggest cross-over....

10.X: Get up Stand up and Rock- Shabba Ranks (Dance)

:lmao: I just turned the song on... and my 2yo daughter stopped dead in her tracks playing with her playdoh, got up, put her hands in the air and started dancing- no joke.
