80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

10.X: I love a Man in a Uniform- Gang of Four (Post punk)

when I think post-punk, I think of this band... even if I don't really think of this song as much as their first album from the 70s. this song took their raw, spare guitar work into more dance territory that they'd immerse themselves in later (and as Shriekback).
FWIW, Dave Allen had already left Go4 and joined Shriekback by the time this was released. Sara Lee played bass on the song.

well there ya go. it definitely had a different sound in play than their first. I can't remember if this is from their 2nd or 3rd album...

and apparently, I can't be counted on to even remember what decade it's from. :oldunsure: ... pretty sure it's from the 80s.

I'm going to take this one only because I don't remember it ever popping up in threads or drafts- and I always loved the song... captures the spirit of a lot of what the early 80s sounded like to me.

12.X: Flaming Desire- Bill Nelson (? wildcard for now)

Nice. Glad to see this one get some attention. Kind of a Bowie/Thomas Dolby vibe.

...even if the link is to Take the Skinheads Bowling.

:lmao:

holy hell. my brain.

Flaming Desire

I loved all the Lookout bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s. I saw Screeching Weasel in 1993 or 1994 - great show - less the Nazi skinheads that always seemed to like to go the opposite direction as everyone else in the mosh pit. Those guys I could do without.

Here is what I have missing from the Google Doc.

Really let this get ahead of me, sorry. Without reading this thread I just sort of jumped in thinking we'd be doing a punk/post punk/indie/alternative/new wave draft, because that's the 80s to me. Kroq in LA was pretty much the only station I listened to post college in 1985, and that was because they played what I listened to in college.

6.06 Guilty Pleasure, Juice Newton, Break it to me Gently

I went to Chico State backinaday (early 80s) when Playboy rated it the nation's best party school. For 2 and a half years I had the girlfriend of awesome. I googled her last year and found a fresh mugshot, dui with pills, brand new Mercedes SL impounded. That's my girl. Anyway, one drunken night she took me by the hand in the legendary Madison Bear Gardens and led me upstairs to the dance floor where she convinced my hoops buddy TC the DJ to spin this song. The clientele was none too pleased but she just took me to the middle of the emptying dance floor, put her arms around me, started swaying to the music and belted out every word in perfect harmony with Juice. Can't stop smiling just typing that. :)

7.14 Rap/Hip Hop, The Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn

Wildcard (unless the hair/metal genre works)
8.06 Guns N' Roses -- Sweet Child 'O Mine

time to add some embarassing pop goodness to the mix:

11.15: Wham! - I'm your man (guilty pleasure)
I've been struggling with this category and this is perfect. Just wish I had though of it before you.
I just feel like that category is so subjective. I mean I would consider any song that someone likes by Bieber to be a guilty pleasure but I'm sure Bieber fans don't feel that way.

Maybe a better name for the category is "song I love that I'm embarrassed about"?

A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The "guilt" involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one's lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes, such as campy styles of entertainment. Fashion, video games, bachata, music, films and junk food can be examples of guilty pleasures.

Think I am past due - posting via phone and will gussy up link later.

12.xx Ozzy Osbourne - "Diary Of A Madman" (title track)
