AcerFC - Did you decide on an Artist for Dancing With Myself?

Ok... so I'm going to continue what I started with the ska pick on Saturday-

I played college soccer with a couple of Jamaican guys who pretty much stuck to themselves. But after expressing an interest in (and very slight knowledge about) Jamaican music, they invited me to one of their parties. Dark, smokey, sweaty, they had this album playing over and over and over again through the whole party- and pretty much everybody was up dancing wherever there was room. As the token white guy there, I had women grinding onto every side of me- including one pushing 2 bills who camped out right in front, her ### locked onto my crotch no mater where I moved. For a suburban white kid, this and the whole experience, was awesome.

As the smoke cleared, the sweat dried and the sun came up, I ran downtown to find this album. That became my own go-to music for every party I had... and it never failed to get everybody on their feet. Spotify, of course, doesn't have it- but theydo have what seems to be the source album for it... even more tunes with more artists (King Jammy's Selections).

Since the album is set up as essentially one track that different artists write their own lyrics and melodies over, it should get a little... repetitive- but somehow doesn't. As such, I could pick just about any song from it, but will go with the guy who arguably had the biggest cross-over....

10.X: Get up Stand up and Rock- Shabba Ranks (Dance)

:lmao: I just turned the song on... and my 2yo daughter stopped dead in her tracks playing with her playdoh, got up, put her hands in the air and started dancing- no joke.

I'm assuming everyone is still good with 15 minute clock this AM? If so, since only one person has picked, we can say 11.01 went on the clock at 10 Eastern and go forward every 15 minutes from there.

Busy day so posting this now. If someone ahead was going to take it no big deal

11.08 The Tubes -

I interpreted the category differently I guess. The song is about strippers which is a guilty pleasure... If that doesn't fly I can change it later

I am having internet issues that won't be fixed until tomorrow morning. I'll make one pick today on my phone, and then skip me today, and I will catch up tomorrow.

11.02 - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me - Culture Club (UK #1)

Always really liked this song.

11.05 Same Old Scene - Roxy Music (TV/Movie Theme)

Sang ran under the credits for Times Square, a 1980 movie that's semi noteworthy as one of the first US mainstream films to delve into punk. The first 30 minutes or so are on Youtube via the link above.

11.12 - Under The Milky Way, The Church (Alternative)

At the ARIA Music Awards of 1989 "Under the Milky" won 'Single of the Year', though Kilbey refused to attend the award ceremony. He said, "You will note that I didn't collect the award. I don't give a #### about winning that award. I've been a big critic of the Australian music industry. I think the whole thing is utterly embarrassing and repulsive."

In 2006 Kilbey said of the recording, "It's actually flat lifeless 'n' and sterile. Great song, sure, but the performance, the sounds are ordinary. We coulda got that in Australia in a week or two for a 20th of the money we spent. Hey, it's sold almost a million in the US alone, but we'll never see any money 'cause it cost so much to make".

Kilbey's assessment ignored its second life as a much-licensed track. In December 2011, he told News Limited reporter, Cameron Adams:

"There is almost nothing, except for maybe a cigarette ad, I'd say no to 'Under the Milky Way' being used for [...] It was used for a car advertisement in America, very lucratively for me. You'd think people would think it's been overused, but the more it's used the more people seem to want to use it. I'm signing off all the time for TV shows or chocolate bars using it. Sure, have it, it's just a song, do whatever you like with it. You can hear it wasn't written for profit. It's an accidental song I accidentally wrote and accidentally became a single and accidentally became a hit. It's been a nice earner [...] I've written 2000 songs. Thank God one of them came through! [...] The others aren't pulling their weight. They sit and grumble about 'Under the Milky Way' and I say, 'Well, boys, go out and earn the same dough as that one'. I never see 'Under the Milky Way' - it's so busy out there working..."
Sounds like a real tool...but he wrote a great song.

Great tune. I took this in the last draft - was gonna do it again, but looking to mix things up.

no... really- I'm confused. I have that memory SO clear in my head... but I had graduated by then and haven't seen those Jamaican teammates since. ... unless... :bag: .... the memory is right, sans Jamaican teammates. This must have been while I was in gradschool. I have no memory of how I got to that party.

I'll repick.

10.X: I love a Man in a Uniform- Gang of Four (Post punk)

when I think post-punk, I think of this band... even if I don't really think of this song as much as their first album from the 70s. this song took their raw, spare guitar work into more dance territory that they'd immerse themselves in later (and as Shriekback).
