80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

Probably not sure WTF a couple of the categories really are...

:bag:
The only one I am having issue with is: Wannabee 80s. Is this a song not in the 80s that sounds like an 80s tune? Is it a song I wish were in the 80's so I could use it? Is it a song from 1979 or 1990? Is it a 80's flop that doesn't deserve to be in the 80's? Are we being forced to choose that horrible Spice Girls song? I have no idea.
I'm not a fan of that category
I'm glad my two ideas are so controversial. Not for the faint of heart! They complement each other, in a way

I think in these kinds of drafts once you see a few things taken for that category you will probably start to have ideas...

I've touted this before, but Britt Daniel of Spoon was in my HS class

Class of 1986

John F. Kennedy H.S. - Granada Hills, CA

The Brady Bunch episodes where Greg played football were filmed at my high school. That's all I got.
:hifive:

errr... Jefferson Airplane/starship whatever played at my HS when my brother was there (secret concert in the gym). Lots of 60s rocker types' kids went there too- Joan Baez son, Ronnie Montrose son, Grace Slick's daughter. Only other thing is that Huey Lewis shot one of his album covers at the local dive bar... and may have gone to my HS.
Nice.

China Kantner is Grace Slick's daughter, no? Must have been a great drug connection.

Yes. She pulled a knife on me once.

The entire school was one big drug connection, parents included (everybody looking for "parent dope", which was always better). Somebody grew a pot plant to bloom on campus.

I don't get what's so controversial. People really don't know modern bands that are knock-offs of 80s bands?

Just curious where everyone else is age-wise in the 80s. I graduated HS in 1988.
I married Mrs. Eephus in 1986
Were you in the Bay Area then?

I grew up out there- HS class of 86'.
I moved to SF in 1982. Lived on Oak and Divis until 84, then moved to the Mission.
What clubs were going to? I remember seeing a lot of my bands at the Kabuki, but also at On-Broadway(?) Fab-Mab (Mabuhay Gardens?) and someplace on Lower Haight.
All those places plus Monday nights at the I-Beam, the Kennel Club (where the Independent is now), 998 Valencia. The Fillmore wasn't the Fillmore for much of the 80s. It was a punk club called something else. Bill Graham reacquired it and reopened it but it had to close again for awhile after the earthquake.

These young'uns thought they were getting new-style music.

omg- yes- the I-Beam.

the last show I saw there was in the 90s... Screamin' Jay Hawkins. I think my gb and I were the only people there.

I really can't think of many (any?).
Pick any 80s act like. Google the name of the act and the word "influenced". It isn't hard.

We've had huge acts influenced by MJ or Prince. We've had indie acts influenced by Joy Division, the Smiths, Gang of Four, whatever.

Does the first song off Album count EPs? or is the first full album?
I asked the same , although I disagree LPs was the answer.
If I could read, I'd be scary...see below.

1st song off first album....Do EPs count or are we disregarding them?
I don't think EPs count, because they are not considered an album (LP).
Yeah to keep it simple, 1st song off 1st LP, it could get really complicated with singles released previously, EP's etc... otherwise

Just because they influenced them doesn't mean that they sound particularly like them. Not to my ears.

I'm sure I'll come up with some but off the top of my head, nobody really comes to mind.

The New Jack Swing has influenced every boy band since 1988

I agree, there are very few songs post 2000 that sound like 80s songs to me - unless we are talking about bands that have survived the 80s, 90s, and are still producing music now.

I feel like most of what I hear for the last 5 years sounds like 80s influenced.

The spirit of the category is to pick a newer song that would sound at home on an 80's mix.

Picking a newer song by an 80's band is cheating.

Not unless some 80's sound is being sampled. I can't think of a band right now that I would say sounds like X band from the 1980s.

I just had one shuffle onto my ipod.

Just listened to another album that I would have sworn was the latest Cure album.

Rules.

Still kicking myself for not picking Aphrodisiac Jacket for the "Awful Lyrics You Still Love" category in the last draft.

Sittin' on a mountain, looking at the sun

Plastic fantastic lobster telephone
It was on my short list for a while but I took it off thinking psychedlic goofiness was Astbury's intent. They do have some other songs with genuinely awful lyrics.

Well, he did rip off Jefferson Airplane with that line, changing "lover" to "lobster telephone". Easy to see the migration.

OK, let's get the Prince out of the way. Yeah, I could use him for Movie Songs. If it were still a category, I'd have considered using this for Breakup songs. The stuff on this album could definitely be considered ahead of its time.

But I'm going to use it for what it really is. A New Wave song.

1.17 -- Prince -- When You Were Mine (New Wave / Synth Pop)

https://play.spotify.com/album/3o0o5WPnqfGOeyx3UMJgvO

Pretty much a perfect single, even if my wife still thinks of it as a Cyndi Lauper song.

Good thing you got that one in the first.

I'll just go ahead and say it...Prince is quite possibly the most overrated artist ever.

cant link from work , on a tinkle break from meeting.

1.18 Turning Japanese by The Vapors( probably slot them 1 hit wonders)

2.01 Big in Japan by Alphaville (could be non us/uk , guilty pleasure, synthpop )

I realize Big in Japan could have gone undrafted but I want to try to work a concept album take on things. School is in session
