80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

JZ picked at :06, valence timed out at :21, which means I'm up.

This category is/was pretty tough for me. Not sure whether to go with a really well known song being covered or just pick the best song that is a cover, this one falls under the best song, plus it was Nirvana's first single, so influential, etc...

8.13 - Love Buzz - Nirvana (Cover Songs)

Skips are piling up, maybe at the end of round 8 we should stop and let everyone make up any picks owed, then everyone can make their round 9 pick on Saturday and their round 10 pick on Sunday. We'll go back to 15 minute clock on Monday.

8.15 Love Is All Around - Hüsker Dü (TV/movie theme)

I have no current way to work this into my mix so I may end up throwing it back next week but the theme for Pee Wee's Playhouse and Holiday Road aren't on Spotify

Fine by me. No timer over the weekend then? One song each day first come first served?

No defense needed for Whitesnake.

Unless you select the version of Here I Go Again where he sings "hobo" instead of "drifter." Hobo generally doesn't work in a song unless you're Roger Miller.
Could be a good category. Songs that mention hobo.

ETA - I'm wrong about 70's, that was 82
I was pretty sure you knew more about David Coverdale than I know about anything.
I know his overall best stuff is on "Slide It In"

But Still Of The Night is the teets
Agreed on both counts.

7.12 - Magic Power, Triumph (Non US/UK band)

Thanks again, Canada! :hey:

The song is just so...freaking...triumphant.

Haven't we all felt like this before?

She climbs into bed, she pulls the covers overhead

And she turns her little radio on

She's had a rotten day so she hopes

The D J's gonna play her favorite song
Or this?

The world is full of compromise

The infinite red tape
But then this happens...?

But the music's got the magic

It's your one chance for escape

So turn me on, turn me up

It's your turn to dream

A little magic power

Makes it better than it seems

I'm young now, I'm wild now

I want to be free

I got the magic power

Of the music in me!!!!!
OUCH! Sniped. Was going to use this as my guilty pleasure. One of my favorite songs, easily fits into my top 10.

ETA: Here is the video. Very cool. ;)
Just wow. Flyin v as the enterprise. Doesn't get much more guilty pleasure than that

That would be a cover of a tv theme, though- right?
Kinda opens the category up in a big way.
Big is a bit of an overstatement
hUGE?

8.8 - Kayleigh, Marillion (Soft Rock)

Kayleigh, I'm still trying to write that love song,
Kayleigh it's more important to me now you're gone.
Maybe it'll prove that we were right
Or it will prove that I was wrong.

I really like how he delivers that last line.
love these guys, saw them open for Dream Theater once in SF.

Jesus, what this is what happens when someone gets sick and pukes for most of the afternoon. Tom F'kin Petty?

Sorry, please skip me if I'm not here for the rest of my life.

4.19? Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) - Garth Brooks - 1989 (Country)
Just found out Garth is not on Spotify, so I may change this Country pick but for now I'll let it stand.
Turns out a few artists are not on Spotify (mild spotlighting) Not on Spotify

Garth being one of them, so if it pleases the court I'm changing my Country pick to one I thought was more of a soft rock cross-over but it turns out was number one on the country chart in 1981 so here it is:

4.19 Step By Step - Eddie Rabbit - 1980 - (Country)

Okay, my turn to be a Richard about a bunch of the picks that have been made all at once in one post.

Time for my next Genre Bending pick.

This song would be ineligible for every other category except this one.

Originally released in 1978 it was eventually included as a B-Side to Computer Love in 1981 and some DJ's realized that the B-Side was better than the A and it fit well with the burgeoning New Romantic movement in Britain. Kraftwerk were the era's equivalent to the Beatles in influence and many artists helped get this to Number 1 in the UK in 1982. It was released as an A-Side against the bands wishes.

4.09 - Kraftwerk - Das Model - UK Number 1 - 3:38
In case I haven't made it clear by now, I'm not in here to worry about genres/rules, etc... I just want to find new music and discuss some great songs that came out in the 80s, sure people are stretching the rules but don't expect me to come down with some great ruling.
Who stole your lollies?

I wasn't expecting you to come down with some great ruling. I like the way you are running this draft.

I've been guilty in the past of getting too involved in the minutae of detail, but it ultimately is pointless. People gonna draft what people draft.

Peer pressure is a great leveller if someone wants to circumvent the spirit of the draft.

If someone seriously wants to sneak a Flock of Seagulls into the Rap/Hip Hop section they will do so in the last few picks whenever everyone is too busy with 3ITC or whatever monstrosity is employed to finish the draft quickly.

If more than 5 people listen to a mix it will be a surprise. When we were able to use megaupload to download and burn, we had a much higher uptake of people listening to other peoples stuff.

Ultimately I want to see more post draft posting and reviews of peoples mixes incorporated. Too many times once the draft is finished it dies and the mixes never get listened to.
