Track 1 side 1 of a debut album is usually a good indicator of what type of artist you are likely to find.

I'd heard good things about this Liverpudlian band and heard snippets from their first 2 singles, one of which qualifies for the one hit wonder category.

I asked to listen to the debut album in the record store and with the headphones on I was blown away by the stereophonic assault this track offers.

Unlike most who dropped off the band after their 1st album, I love everything they ever did and have watched the lead singer Ian McNabbs career get smaller and smaller until he was offering to play in peoples living rooms and backyards. His solo material is more patchy than the bands, but has highs just as high.

Ant had to recruit his new band band from scratch and his new Ants, led by Marco Perroni established him on a more commercial path.

McClaren introduced Ant to the heavily drum influenced music of the Burundi beat and Ant used it to form his 2 drummer sound for the Kings of Wild Frontier Sound which at school we managed to successfully reproduce on school desks using our hands.

Up late coding - putting in my early Saturday pick. There are literally two dozen Smiths/Morrissey tunes that I could choose and be content with a solid choice. I already have a song from Ferris Bueller's Day Off so I am leaving that Smiths song off my list. And while Charmed did have Alyssa Milano (a favorite of mine since the 80s) I am leaving that theme off the list as well.

Okay, my turn to be a Richard about a bunch of the picks that have been made all at once in one post.

Time for my next Genre Bending pick.

This song would be ineligible for every other category except this one.

Originally released in 1978 it was eventually included as a B-Side to Computer Love in 1981 and some DJ's realized that the B-Side was better than the A and it fit well with the burgeoning New Romantic movement in Britain. Kraftwerk were the era's equivalent to the Beatles in influence and many artists helped get this to Number 1 in the UK in 1982. It was released as an A-Side against the bands wishes.

In case I haven't made it clear by now, I'm not in here to worry about genres/rules, etc... I just want to find new music and discuss some great songs that came out in the 80s, sure people are stretching the rules but don't expect me to come down with some great ruling.

I've been guilty in the past of getting too involved in the minutae of detail, but it ultimately is pointless. People gonna draft what people draft.

Peer pressure is a great leveller if someone wants to circumvent the spirit of the draft.

If someone seriously wants to sneak a Flock of Seagulls into the Rap/Hip Hop section they will do so in the last few picks whenever everyone is too busy with 3ITC or whatever monstrosity is employed to finish the draft quickly.

If more than 5 people listen to a mix it will be a surprise. When we were able to use megaupload to download and burn, we had a much higher uptake of people listening to other peoples stuff.

Ultimately I want to see more post draft posting and reviews of peoples mixes incorporated. Too many times once the draft is finished it dies and the mixes never get listened to.

What did you think of Radlands? I really liked it, especially the title track, "Someone Purer" and "Greatest Hits" but seems like it was mostly panned.

On that title track, the lyric "May the bridges we burn light the way..." I think it's pretty awesome, but also seems like someone should have come up with it a long time ago.. it seems mostly attributed to Dylan from 90210, someone tell me it's deeper than that please.

What did you think of Radlands? I really liked it, especially the title track, "Someone Purer" and "Greatest Hits" but seems like it was mostly panned.

On that title track, the lyric "May the bridges we burn light the way..." I think it's pretty awesome, but also seems like someone should have come up with it a long time ago.. it seems mostly attributed to Dylan from 90210, someone tell me it's deeper than that please.

I like the band a lot but they're kind of at a career crossroads after four albums. A lot of press they got in the beginning was about Blaine's disability and relationship with his father. Their last two albums have been more ambitious but didn't have any charting UK singles. Their big break opening for the Mumfords on their US tour was unfortunately cut short when the headliners cancelled. I'm looking forward to see where they go next. They have the talent to be career artists but they need an audience to be able to do that.

As for Radlands, I'm always suspicious of any British bands that make a record in the US that's inspired by touring this country. My first thought is of Spinal Tap harmonizing at Graceland. The songs you mentioned plus Lost in Austin were the standout tracks but there were some clinkers as well. I think Serotonin was their most consistent album but was kind of lacking in highlights.

Yeah occurred to me this morning that my drunk posting was likely inaccurate.

I work with a guy who is a scout for the Greyhounds, so they've kind of become my western conference favourite.

Pretty typical soul/dance jam of the early 80s. Still had that tendency to turn a 3 minute song into a 7 minute song, which means it probably lasts longer than all the guys trying to take the song's advice. I still dig it, and since I got sniped on the Gap Band (now I can't tell my story about how that song is always playing when I visit Ben's Chili Bowl), I'll go with this.
