80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

Going to do a bunch of hit and runs as I've been away from the computer for most of the day.

Love this song. Wrote it down, just couldn't force it into a category I had left.

I feel no guilt for loving this song (or any song for that matter), but some may hate it or not give it the time of day, plus it's country. This is Johnny's daughter.

16.18 - Seven Year Ache - Rosanne Cash (guilty pleasure)
Nothing to feel guilty about - I was forced to listen to country music in the late 70's and early 80 when around my parents. This one I tried to convince myself I didn't like, but I did.

16.15 Welcome to the Boomtown - David + David (First song off first only album)

There's been a lot of nostalgia in this thread but the 80s were also a very scary time. This song captures the slick artifice and the rotten core that exemplified the era.
This and another song that I have on my short list are "serious" songs that I just don't think of when I think of 80's, but they are both so good they made my short list. Still trying to "shoehorn" the other one in.

17.3 Stiff Kittens, Blaqk Audio, wannabe 80s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUGDjUvoFsY
Was on my very short list for this category - having a difficult time with this category.

I was convinced I was going to the Holly Knight tree for my one hit wonder, but instead go to a total anomaly from the 80s.

A german guy who had a bigger hit in the US with this track than practically anywhere outside Europe.

Breaking Bad brought it back in spectacular style.

Was going to draft this as a companion piece to my previously drafted "Ashes To Ashes".

17.10 - Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home) - 5:00 - One Hit Wonder
Maybe I wasn't searching correctly but the best version I could find on Spotify was in German.
I think half of my list won't be on spotify. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. German will do I suppose

If you really want it I can throw it back, I have plenty of choice for this category.

I've already got Major Tom on my spotify! Load it up.

TBH, I heard Schilling's Major Tom way before I heard Bowie's, and I still like it better :ninja:

18.8 - Rush Hour, Jane Wiedlin (Guilty pleasure)

It's so catchy. I sing like a fool whenever the player shuffles to this song.

Do I get extra points for the double entendre of pairing Wiedlin with the guilty pleasure category? :s&m:

1988 remains my favorite year ever for unheralded / forgotten-about music. I'm tempted to put together one of these mixtapes solely featuring songs from that year.

I think that music is unheralded/forgotten because it's the last year of truly 80's sounding music. The tastes were turning away from that sound and more towards the type more closely associated with the early 90's.

I know saw him at some point... I think opening for Joe Jackson- and liked the easy poppy flow of his writing. This tune was the main song by the main acapella group at college, and has gotten stuck in my brain. Brings back happy memories too... so-

17.7- Mary Ann- Marshall Crenshaw (Soft Rock?... if not, then Pop)

Im going to shuffle things around a little to make my mix better (for me at least)

I am going to throw back Back Street Girl as a cover song and instead draft

9.3 Mommys Little Monster, Social Distortion, Title Track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7sUh-DX7I0

I am then going to draft my 18th rounder

18.17 Miserlou, Agent Orange, cover

Thanks for listening
awesome.

you listen to any Dwarves, acer?
I have heard some of their stuff but never really got into them. I dont own any of their CDs. Ill try them again though. Anything you suggest as a starting point

can't remember too much (I had something on vinyl way back then and hadn't really thought about them until now)... but had that garage/surf/punk vibe to them that I got from Miserlou. Similar to The Cramps, IIRC.

I always take the lead singer, David Sylvian, in drafts because I wub him. Figure it's time to take the original band, which never gets enough love in 80s nostalgia... they predated Duran Duran and were better at the sound, IMO- but not as poppy. Their glam-rock stuff in the 70s is pretty fun too, but their New Romantic albums of the 80s are definitely what define them. Their next album is better, IMO, but doens't have a title track.

If we get a decent amount of round 18 picks in here, I may do two windows this afternoon (Rd 19 11-2) & (Rd 20 2-5), rather than trying to squeeze extra picks in on a Friday afternoon.

I was upset that there was no Sonic Youth picked and was going to use my wildcard on them.

To me, Fugazi and Sonic Youth epitomize what Alternative music is

A lot of other bands that dont belong there just got lumped into the same category

There are a couple other bands I really hope get selected, which is why I'm still a little undecided on my other "alt" pick

So happy when I found this group - This screams Prince to me.

18.19 Girls - The 1975 - (Wannabe 80s)
Vike... the song you've linked sucks.
Sorry, I fixed the link. That may not change your mind though... :D
The whole album is very eightyish. "Sex" (the song) was on my shortlist for this category.

I saw them live last year with my daughter. Mrs. Eephus and I were among the few in the audience who remembered the actual 1975.

Love this album. His second has a pretty great collection of songs too but the big 80s drum sound Steve Lillywhite used hasn't aged well.

You and Mrs. Eephus are the coolest iCouple I don't know.

I can only hope to be able to drag my wife to a concert when we're in our 90's.

Yeah, looked at a couple songs from him, but they were early 90s.
