80s music, it didn't all suck - the forgotten, obscure, neglected (1 Viewer)

I'm Supposed To Have Sex With You - Tonio K.

Goofy as it is, I love this tune. You may remember it as the background of a scene from the academy award winning* 80's film "Summer School" with Mark Harmon, Kirstie Allie, and smoking hot Courtney Thorne-Smith.

* This film won no awards that I'm aware of.

The BoDeans Fadeaway. Milwaukee’s own and I’ve seen them at Summerfest more than a few times. Most remember them by the Party of Five theme song Closer to Free
One of my favorite bands without a doubt. Saw them in Denver with about 100 other people and it was an amazing show.

Side track--this afternoon, took my 15 year old daughter (who was born 40 or 50 years too late) to this vintage shop in a real sketch part of town that literally has everything. We probably spent two hours going through clothes and albums. She loves the 50's and 60's styles. I bought her two amazing dresses from the 50's. What a great afternoon--Smithereens--Million Miles Away, the Cars, some Sam Cooke blasting in the store while we shopped. The rest of the afternoon was used book and album shopping.  You know one of those days that when we got home and my wife says to us, "Did you guys have fun" and my daughter and I say we did, but we just look at each other and nod, knowing what a special day it was. I love being a dad because there are moments like this (we have two daughters 20 and 15) that I can replay in my mind and just makes me appreciate the little things.

unlike most 80heads, i do not celebrate the obscure. one of the great things about the decade is that everything worthy pretty much hit the surface. lots of this-is-me trash which does not sustain but to point more-talented others in the right direction

that said, the best 80s acts who might never have been icons and certainly are no longer are Thomas Dolby, Los Lobos, English Beat/General Public, Was/Not Was, Fishbone. I consider XTC & Devo icons.

ETA: oh, and i'm a freakatron for Terence Trent d'Arby and early Bobby Brown
Los Lobos playing at the Canyon Club here 12/27. Probably seen them at 3 festivals last 5 years. Still bring it. English Beat is almost a house band at the Canyon now. Several times a year

More known for his 60s and 70s output, Paul Simon still found a way to keep it going.

That whole album, Graceland is wonderful.

Again, since we talking 80s, you have to take the video into account. The video for You Can Call Me Al is one of my favorites. Love how Chevy Chase and Paul Simon play off each other in the video, with all the little things that they do with the various instruments and other props.

Went to HS with her. Stunning then, but also hugely full of conviction and sense of doing the right thing. Had a massive crush or course, but also tons of respect for her as a person. Been happy to see her successes, even though we were only friendly and never real friends.

The 1980's had a number of lead singers of top groups release songs as solo artists. Sting and Peter Cetera got most of the attention, but there were other good solo songs.

Speaking of INXS, anyone else going to see Live Baby Live at your local cinema next Monday night? Its them live at Wembley from 1991 in front of 75,000 fans. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

Bad English - Forget Me Not

D.A.D. - Sleeping My Day Away

Survivor - First Night
Great song and great album (Vital Signs). Saw them perform the entire album live opening for Bryan Adams in 1985. Front Row too. Jamison was a fantastic lead vocalist (RIP).

Late to this thread so I'll multi-quote...

Any 4AD fans? I met Lush once. Sweetness and Light
Yep. Fan of both 4AD and Lush. Lush maybe isn't 80s but where'd you meet them, what were they like?

I always liked Dead Can Dance.  I think they were pretty obscure.

Obscure but probably neglected intentionally, as that sure isn't for everybody. I still revisit Dead Can Dance every few years, especially that album.

Big hint there. I guessed the band but not the song. Good mention.

Started in late 80s, but I hear ya. Met them at a meet and greet in a Milwaukee music store. Ended up grabbing a few drinks with them nearby before their show that night. This was for the Gala album iirc. They were all very nice. They signed all my albums and singles.
