______ Passed Away Today, RIP (3 Viewers)

Awww. He did pretty much chart his own course. RIP.
He obviously left an emotional pull on people because on the Twitter timeline there is his name and then above and below him are nothing but topics about a certain something that we can't talk about.
He was fun and funny and harmless. And he did good things for other people. That's worth celebrating.

(Also cracking up Greg Proops.)

Dave Loggins, "Please Come to Boston singer," dies at 76.

Grammy nominated song writer, was a second cousin of Kenny Loggins and wrote songs for many performers including Johnny Cash, Wynonna Judd, Alabama, Reba McEntire, Tanya Tucker, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, and Ray Charles. Little known fact is that his best-known song among sports fans is likely “Augusta,” the theme song for the Augusta Masters Golf Tournament, which has soundtracked the event since 1982.

James Sikking RIP

Most know him as the Swat leader on 'Hill Street Blues', but I'll always know him as the finance officer on the episode 'Tuttle' of M*A*S*H.
He was in multiple episodes and had one of the funniest lines of the whole series:

Just write in 'pizza' where it says 'machine gun'.
Col. Henry: Oh, that'll be great on movie night!

What was truly amazing about Newhart is that he had no designs on getting into showbiz. He was an accountant and then an ad copywriter. At the latter job, he and a co-worker would mess around developing funny situations revolving around absurd phone calls. He developed these routines further by himself after his co-worker left the company. Word of these routines got to a DJ, who loved them and introduced him to execs at Warner Brothers, who had him develop them into a standup act and a comedy album. That album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, became the first comedy record to top the album charts and won Newhart two Grammys.

So he got into showbiz by accident and never looked back.

His bit about "Crazy Walt", Walter Raliegh was pretty good:

"You spilled your what? Your 'coffee'? What is that?....you take...beans? And you do what?"

He was an accountant

My favorite snippet from his Wiki bio:

After the war, Newhart worked for United States Gypsum as an accountant. He later said that his motto, "That's close enough", and his habit of adjusting petty cash imbalances with his own money showed he did not have the temperament to be an accountant.

As a CPA that is :lmao:

Get a tv station called ANTENNA TV here in Ohio that has old tv shows on it. Right mow : Johnny Carson. Who's on it? Bob Newhart
Newhart was one of Johnny's favorite guests because he always came prepared with a funny story or anecdote, but also he could keep up with Johnny's one-liners with his own improvisations (which was a rare trait that really impressed Carson).

Evan Wright Dies: Author Of ‘Generation Kill’, Adapted Into HBO Miniseries, Was 59

Wright was a Rolling Stone correspondent embedded with 1st Recon Bn - the tip of the spear who were the first unit to reach Baghdad.

I get the sense many civilians have never seen Generation Kill? IME Operation Enduring Freedom vets are virtually unanimous in saying it’s the most accurate series of the conflict.

If you never got around to reading his book, highly recommended.

We won’t really know the reasons for a long time, if ever - but Evan committed suicide 5 days ago.

There are 19 million veterans in the United States. Everyone reading this knows one (or doesn’t know they know one.)

In this private message shared by another journalist from a few years ago, Evan talks about

1) what PTSD has been like for him and the many combat veterans he stayed in touch with,

and

2) there is nothing in the civilian world which can effectively treat combat PTSD.

This resonates as true as anything I’ve ever read. However empathetic one might feel toward veterans, other combat veterans are the single best resource for men and women who have been traumatized by war.

If you know or hear of a veteran who is struggling, encourage them to get service connected to their nearest VA Medical Center.

Also, every VA Medical Center will have a psychiatrist on duty in the ER if it’s outside normal business hours.

If you know or hear of a veteran who is experiencing a mental health crisis, the Veterans Crisis Line is staffed 24/7/365:
  1. THE VETERAN’S CRISIS LINE HAS UPDATED THEIR # TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR VETERANS TO REACH THEM.
  2. YOU CAN NOW DIAL 988 THEN PRESS 1 TO REACH THEM, IF YOU HAVE A CRISIS OR JUST WISH TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE. THE 1-800-273-8255 THEN 1 AT THE PROMPT CAN STILL ALSO BE USED.
REMEMBER YOU CAN CALL IF YOU JUST WISH TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE, OR SOMEONE TO LISTEN WHILE YOU VENT, OR JUST CANNOT SLEEP AT 2AM. THIS # IS NOT ONLY IF YOU WISH TO HARM YOURSELF, IT IS ALSO JUST TO VENT.

3. CALL A NURSE 24/7: (800) 877-6976 THEN PRESS 3 FOR ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.

Newhart would also appear with Don Rickles and they would talk about vacations they shared with their wives.
It always seemed like such an odd pairing.
