CBS SportsLine has confirmed that the Lions and Broncos will complete a trade that will send CB Dre Bly to Denver in exchange for RB Tatum Bell, OT George Foster and what is believed to be a fifth-round pick in the 2007 Draft. According to Troy Asmus, one of Bell's agents, the Lions have already given Bell the starting RB job. Bell's agent "talked to the running back coach, and the coach said, 'Look, Tatum's coming in here as the starter, he will not be looking over his shoulder about No. 2. He is going to be the guy.'" Last year's starter in Detroit, Kevin Jones, suffered a Lisfranc injury late last season and likely is not ready to start the season when he gets healthy.

Notice, he's the starter because Jones will not be ready. Thus, he's #1 until Jones comes back and then he really is #2. Call it what it is!!!

Did you expect Tatum's agent to say that he was going to be the backup?

When the RB coach says he is the No. 1 starter ... then I listen ...

I can hear him now, "my client is going to detroit to keep the starter's seat warm while the much superior talent, Kevin Jones, recovers from a foot injury. But let's not kid ourselves here. When KJ is 100% my client will be back where he belongs - spelling KJ for a breather and mop up duty."

 :lmao: :goodposting:

He does have the ability to bust off a long one now and then, I don't see how his value has taken "a major hit". There wasnt much value to begin with and now he'll be playing on a faster surface

KJ can't really workout in the offseason, so I do think Tatum would get his chance to start a few. However, Tatum would be very lucky to get anything more than RBBC as the season continued.

When KJ does come back, expect to see them both back there quite a bit. Martz loves to throw to his backs and create mismatches for the D.

But Martz does not like RBBC. Never has. Even when he was drafting guys like TRung Candidate and Lamar Gordon way too high....

Lions | Team to keep T. Bell on trade market?Fri, 2 Mar 2007 09:22:22 -0800John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports there are indications the Detroit Lions may keep RB Tatum Bell, recently acquired by the Denver Broncos, on the trade market between now and the NFL Draft to judge his value around the league, and then make a decision on him based on how free agency and the draft plays out. The Lions may be willing to trade Bell if the price was right.

:D
Wise move. There are still a few serviceable RBs in free agency. If the Lions get value for Bell and acquire another stopgap RB on the cheap, Millen will have earned his March paycheck.

And so Tatum Bell begins the Trung Canidate phase of his career.
Heheh, ditto from Rotoworld:
MLive.com expects the Lions to use Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell in two-back formations once Jones gets healthy.Mike Martz tried to do the same thing with Trung Canidate and Marshall Faulk back in the day. Jones is like his Faulk and Tatum is like his Trung.Source: MLive.com

first of all, the lions were forced to have to deal Bly anyway. they got that done, and now they can gauge Jones' progress and the league's interest in Bell to maximize their value. if a guy like Marshawn Lynch slips to them in Round 2... they'll DEF take him. though its just an example, not a probability.

second of all, even IF bell starts... he'll be hurt by week 4. then calhoun comes in, and plays and gets hurt around week 7. the Jones will come in, and finish out the season while sporadically missing time due to injury. point is, no one in this backfield is worth depending on.

eta: i know no one is giving this any credence anyway, but to those who are/might: if Bell couldn't succeed in DEN, what makes anyone think he'll do well in DET???

Bell didn't succeed in Denver? :bag: He averaged 5.3 yards per carry his first two seasons, and had over 900 yards in 2005. Then he broke 1000 in 2006.Sure, he didn't show he could handle a full-time load, and he had fumble problems, but he was still a pretty effective runner. I don't see any reason to completely write him off.

Free agent prices are going to be steep. I don't think they can acquire a player of Bell's caliber for peanuts. If they trade Bell, I would speculate it's because they expect to get something out of Calhoun.

Calhoun's coming off major surgery/recovery as well as Jones. I don't think they will get rid of Bell for those reason's and $.Even if KJ and Calhoun are ready to play there's no guarantee they will be what they were before.

As per Rotoworld: T.J. Duckett-RB- Redskins Mar. 2 - 4:54 pm et The Jets and Lions have interest in free agent T.J. Duckett, according to the New York Daily News.Detroit must be really worried about Kevin Jones' Lisfranc injury as well as Brian Calhoun's ACL to want another tailback after acquiring Tatum Bell. The Lions reportedly already have a visit set up with Duckett.Source: New York Daily News Maybe KJ is worse than they will let on, and really want depth. Or Martz is just a maniac?
