Alexander close to resigning with Hawks (1 Viewer)

The Seahawks are close to a deal to re-sign free agent Shaun Alexander, the NFL MVP and rushing champion, before he hits the open market, which right now is scheduled to be at 12:01 tonight. He's likely to get between $12 million-$15 million in guaranteed money. Seattle, by previous agreement, could not use its franchise tag on Alexander. He's an irreplaceable part for the Seahawks and they are the best fit for him. The contract could be announced tomorrow.

Too much money for a guy that will not make you win the big game .

Too soft , no leadership and selfish ( like who .......Peyton Manning )

He is a creation of the system , most talented RB would do as well in Seattle.

I agree. Looks like MOMo will take his services elsewhere. I think he'd do just as well if Hutch stays.

Yep, definitely a product of the system  Shaun Alexander is what he is . . . the best player in the NFL last season.

Criticize the deal if you want based on age and tread on his tires, but there is no questioning Alexanders talent. Yeah, product of the system, almost 1900 yards and 27 tds. That is laughable.

I wonder if hawk fans will continue to bash this guy once he signs or if they'll reverse course. Alexander is a stud.

As a Seahawk fan and an Alexander owner this is awesome news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we can only keep Hutchinson.......................

Not all Seahawk fans bash SA. Some of us actually do want him back.

Here comes another multi page thread debating on whether or not hes worth what they are gonna pay him, or if they even should pay him at all. Just what the Pool needs - more pee.

Yeah, and Walter Payton was just a product of the system. If the Bears hadn't run the ball as often he would have never had the rushing record.

Put down the crack pipe and come back to reality.

Yeah, and Emmitt Smith was a product of his system and had the best OL in football period...

Alexander > Smith
Emmitt was a product of the system, just like SA is. Jeff Kent won an MVP in baseball by being a product of the "system" where you have Barry Bonds protecting you in the lineup. Scottie Pippen won 6 rings being part of the "system" where Michael Jordan was around. The "system" is part of the equation. These guys don't exist in a vaccum and SA being part of the system and being a talented runner are not mutually exclusive ideas.

Alexander is a great running back period.

The OL helps in SOME of his production.

Signed,

A Seahawk fan
No doubt SA is a talented back and very few could do as well he does in this system, but that OL is well over half responsible. If he went to another team you'd see. Both in whoever replaces him doing very weell and him not doing so well behind a new line. He does NOT handle contact well and the line keeps everyone off him. To dismiss the line as 'some help' is blasphemous. SA's had 1 of 5 playoff games where he did well, I was shocked to find out he actually had 95 yards in the SB. He just wasn't a factor. That line would make any above average back into a stud, and that's what they've done with SA. He's very, very good but without a dominating line he's a slightly above average producer, period. Now, I give him mad credit for the last two years, he dissipated much of my "problems" with him, especially his 3rd and 1 production last year. However, both of those were contract years and I just feel a "fat cat" syndrome from him. I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he will continue to improve, however I feel that it is ESSENTIAL that Hutch and the rest of the line stay together for that to happen. Not just some help, they're like Atlas carrying him to just stupefying stats.

Mad Sweeney,

I had no intention of making a blasphemous statement on a Sunday afternoon. I beliveve that the Seahawks (with Hutchinson) has the best line in football, but I also feel that Alexander is "one of the best" rb's. That combination is lethal, I hope that we can keep them all together. I used the word "some" because posters above felt that "all" Hawks fans were wanting Alexander to leave.

A lot of dynasty/keeper league owners will be breathing a sigh of relief if this signing happens. No way he would have the same production in the places he could have gone to.

He needs to learn how to catch a pass. Then I'll put him in hte Edge, LT2, LJ category. If that offense gets him in free space more it will open up the passing game even more. I'll be glad he's coming back but he needs to continue to produce and then add some pass catching skills and I'll buy the jersey. I also may be keeping him now in my keeper league which is an added bonus.

Seems kinda young to resign.
This always confused me too. Resigning versus re-signing. Why is this the same word?
They're not the same - resign is to quit and re-sign is to sign again. I wasn't going to say anything since jeter23 used it correctly in the post and it's just wrong in the title.

Than why wouldn't any team give up a 2nd rounder for him last year?Surely there were teams that could have found cap space if they felt he was the top player in the NFL

Basically its due to how the RB market has gone.RBs are the easiest to replace in the NFL right now. Great quality coming from College and there have been an abundance in Free Agency as well.

There's no use in giving up a 2nd rounder AND signing him to a big contract if you can get a slight drop off in production for much much cheaper.

Whats better for a team? A RB at 5 million a year who rushes for 1800 yards or a RB for 3 million a year who rushes for 1400 yards?

Notebook: 'Big money' backs might find they're a dime a dozen

So why is it that running backs Shaun Alexander of the Seattle Seahawks, Edgerrin James of the Indianapolis Colts and Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens all might be in for a rude awakening this free-agent period?

The veteran running back has been devalued.

The expected mega-contracts many -- led by their agents, of course -- thought could be coming their way might not become a reality. "You know why," asked one AFC personnel director. "It's because teams are starting to treat running backs like we would if we were coaching in college. You keep them for four or five years and then you move on. It's the one position where younger players can make an impact right away."

aren't most players a product of the system? Even the most talented players need good players around them to be successful.

There's a very big difference between playing in the right system and being a product of the system.

Can everyone please stop saying that the only reason SA got any yards is because of his line? Such an ignorant assanine comment. The only reason QB's get any yards is because the WR catches the ball.

Nobody's saying that. What's funny is that your comment is truly asinine since you're basically fabricating a statement to be indignant about.

Glazer on fox radio no link

8 years 62 miliion ...most of it in the first three years.
I was hoping for a change but if he's going to be wearing blue, then GO SHAUN!! Let's work on that blitz pickup and remember that you can catch the ball too.
