All Android/Google All the Time (1 Viewer)

Thinking of making the jump from an iphone to a Pixel.

Pros for the pixel:   Google Fi, Daydream View (I'll admit I'm nerding out over the potential of the 360 photos posted on google earth), headphone jack, supposed compatibility with other google services, better for work due to ability to run a couple of useful apps

Pros for apple: security, privacy (not sure I really care much about this), excellent quality control, share apps with my ipad, slightly faster

Both cameras look awesome, with the primary differences being the apple is much better at portraits, and the pixel is much better in low light conditions

Anything I'm missing?

More random thoughts. The text on this website is so tiny.

It's not true 5.5 inch for all apps. SOme don't take away the button bar but others do

My Note 4 seems to have some issues since the last update, mainly with Spotify.  Previously, when I pulled out the headphones, the music paused.  Now that is hit or miss.  I listen to Spotify all day at work, so it is a little annoying to pull the phones to get up from my cube and then have my phone blast Ice Ice Baby and have to scramble to unlock, open Spotify, the pause.

The other issue is that when Spotify is playing, it used to show up on the lock screen with the ability to pause without unlocking the phone.  That's gone now too.

I don't see settings options for either of these, so just a couple of new "features" with the newest upgrade.  Thanks Obama!

Now I know why people ask for calendar apps and such.  The Samsung TouchWiz stuff has all that built in
Why wouldn't you use Google's own calendar app, which I imagine comes preloaded on the Pixel? I personally love the experience of pure Android over something as bloated as TouchWiz.

I should rephrase. Google calendar widget is horrible. The one I had was a month view on a full screen.  It looks great when I click on the calendar but I want the widget to be month view. Can't seem to get that. I resized to full screen but it's still a daily view

Okay, that makes much more sense, and I agree that the GCal widget sucks.  This one looks pretty good https://play.google.com/store/search?q=calendar widget&hl=en (the first one)

I know what your saying about the TouchWiz calendar.  That's the one thing that was good about TouhWiz.  I went through the same thing when going from TouchWiz to the Google launcher on my Note 4.

Thanks for the updates.  Mine shipped yesterday.

Thanks. And the text size thing seems to be a difference in Chrome renderings. For example note 7 had a home button top left.

Pixel does not.

The text on any webpage is tiny compared to my note 7 but all my phone/app text looks fine. It's like it's rendering the full webpage and making sure it fully renders so it shrinks everything, if that makes sense.

I can pinch zoom but that is a pain.

Anyway only been tinkering for a couple hours because of work. So far no regrets ?

This is just me comparing what I am used to from Samsung.

I actually love the Google Calendar widget. Shows everything I have going on for the month (in month view) and with a quick touch takes me to the full month calendar view. Those other widgets are a bit tougher to read and then clicking on the event I want to look at can be cumbersome.

How do you make the widget month view?

OK some phone stuff.

So far the camera has been really nice. I haven't played with it a lot and don't take a ton of pics but really nice.

Battery so far has been great

Video is really good also

Still tinkering as the dark skin said it's in beta testing.

Didn't think I would like where the fingerprint scanner is but I do.

Google assistant is ok but I'm not into the voice stuff. Rather just click on app for weather etc

Hopefully this weekend I get some good time.

Didn't think there would be this much of a curve. I did like much of the stuff Samsung did with email, weather etc

Ok. How did the text end up 2 sizes. The text to the right of battery is perfect

Some updates for apps just installed. Much better. Weather is better now. Among other tweaks.

Now if I can just figure out how to get the Google app off the home screen....lol

How big of a difference is it having a software home button.  That's what I'm dreading in will miss most about the note.

There is a virtual home button. So far pretty close to the same for me....I think

I dont think I could live without a fingerprint scanner any more. So much easier to open up your phone, so much easier to get into all my secured banking apps

Ok did side by side compare of both phones and the pixel Xl on this forum for whatever reason is a touch smaller

I guess that extra screen does make a difference lol

Ok after spending more time I'm really starting to dig the phone however I'm not thrilled with all the big brother stuff that Google has that it's sort of like apple has . I gotta turn on a bunch of stuff  like the cards and feeds to get a couple of the options that I want but overall I don't like the feeds. and my other complaint is the os feels a little unstable as in options I select ed sometimes work and not work if that makes sense

The only feeds I care about are the weather, commute (this is my favorite for the traffic alerts), and places. I have the rest turned off.  I gave up caring about the Big Brother aspect of technology long ago, its a fight you cant win.

I suppose you are right. I'll have to spend more time with it, I suppose.

Not sure of the set up on the Pixel but on the 6P my Google Now Feed is a swipe left of my main home screen. I do not find it intrusive at all. What are your issues with it?
That's how this is but I turned it off.

However I had to turn on the feeds to get weather to work on the home screen.  I just never liked it. I always felt I would change setting and notifications to be off. Then I would end up with stuff in my feed again and get notified. . I am pretty "basic" and plain with how I like my phone.

One thing I don't like is the inability to customize the app drawer.  I'm used to putting folders in the app drawer. For example I put all Amazon apps in a folder.  I can make folders on the home screens but I don't like a lot of clutter. I'm an app drawer guy ?

So you are turning certain notifications off in your feed but are still getting them? I would like the ability to organize my app drawer. I am with you, I dont like a lot of clutter on my home screen. I now have 4 folders on the bottom of my screen with my most used apps.

Yes about the notifications. But I think I found an option for those.

My problem now is I can't find the 2 options I turned off to turn them back on to try something lol

Three line button on the upper left of the Google Now Screen - Your Feed - Commute and Time to Leave (Turn this On)
I don't have that. Not sure if it's because I'm on 7.1 or the new assistant

I think things like traffic only pop up on Now when they are relevant.
Thanks.

The feed stuff is new to me.  I've never used it. Figure I'll try it out. I always disabled Google now.

@belljr would you mind posting a screen shot of your google now home screen feed and of your settings menu within GN. I am curious as to what your settings look like vs mine on a 6p

Got my Spigen case yesterday and my Pixel XL today. Will try to activate over lunch. Initial impression is that the phone is heavy, but comfortably heavy if that makes any sense.

So far digging the Pixel. I used it pretty extensively on Saturday (streaming audio while working in the yard, an epic Candy Crush run and just wanting to keep playing with it) and went to bed with 30% battery still left. Haven't used it as much today and currently still have 65% left. So the battery has been nice. The camera is super quick with some great pics and the video stabilization worked really well. The screen is beautiful. The fingerprint sensor has worked flawlessly.

The only issue I've had is that today I wasn't able to make or receive calls. Contacted Fi support and they were able to fix it in a matter of minutes (service outage in my area that required switching carriers).

Obviously a way too early review but after 2.5 days I'm happy.

Is this something you can resolve on your own? This would be a deal breaker for me with Fi.

I've only had Fi for 2 days so maybe someone that has used it more often, like @Buddy Ball 2K3 can confirm.

Support gave me a code to dial which would switch carriers if one has an outage. It connected me to TMobile (I was on US Cellular at the time). Not sure how accurate it is, or how many codes there are, because the follow up email I received said I could use that code "anytime there is an outage with Sprint"

That being said, I also downloaded an app called Fi Info (There are others but I just grabbed this one to start with). It tells you which carrier and what Wifi signal you are currently connected to. There is an option to switch carriers but I haven't tried it yet.

The only issue myself or anyone on my new group plan (I have employees on it) has had with service was when we were out of country. We would not have service and would have to select the actual carrier. Fi support didn't mention this the first try and finally did this past time when we had someone in Canada.

After a few more days really liking the phone.

Here are some things I'm still not liking but probably fixable.

1. My notification light seems wonky. Feel like sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

2. Gmail as all my email client is just not working. I have my 3 emails through that. Even if I mark as read it doesn't always do it on the server, for yahoo. (Yahoo is my catch all account) so it's not a huge deal but bothers me.

3. Can't customize app drawer , probably my biggest gripe.

4. Missed phone call identification on the phone app. One thing I liked about Samsung was if I missed a call I would have a little number on the phone app and a notification.

5. White background on notifications/menus. I like dark backgrounds and the invert colors option doesn't look good.

6. I touch the stupid virtual home button when typing way too much. I also don't like the stock alarms lol

Overall love the phone though.

My one feature I do super love is long press the square to make split screen
