All Android/Google All the Time (1 Viewer)

Using my Nexus 5 today.

The launcher only have 2 screens and swiping into Google Now is a bit different. Got to figure out a new layout.

And holy cow is this thing BRIGHT red. Kinda regretting that choice at the moment.
I use the Google Launcher on my Nexus 7, I am a bit indifferent to it. If you want something more similar to what you have give Nova Launcher a test drive, it is great.

And oh yeah, that is a very red red - lol
My tablet (N7) is very well set up with widgets I like and use, so I never went with launcher. My phone, I didn't have it, but I honestly think I can pare down to the 2 screens. I'm giving it a whirl.

You can add screens... just add a new widget and drag to the right.

So.... who is using Inbox so far?

I am pretty particular about my Gmail inbox, and use all sorts of filtering and labeling to keep the content under control - it works well for me and I am very comfortable with it. I am not so sure how I am going to like Inbox.... that being said, it sure is pretty (and I love how I can snooze emails).b
i'm a heavy gmail apps user so i don't think inbox will be for me. but it looks like a great way for average users to get a handle on their emails.

Check out Boomerang by Baydin and let Lauren know the dog collar guy sent you. It allows "snoozing" and other email management features. Absolutely could not live without my Boomerang now

Been an iPhone user since day 1 and after the 6 was released I knew it was time to jump ship and got myself an S5 and love it. Still trying to get used to it given I had an iPhone for 7+ years but def glad I made the jump. Wife did the same thing and also enjoying the galaxy.
I'm not sure how i could switch platforms. Unless you are someone who doesn't buy any or many apps... wouldn't you lose a lot of content making the switch?

i mean i have the no-ad pro version of about a dozen apps and while that's less than $70 spent, it would still suck to switch.

Having said that, you did the right thing.

just got my play store update on my N5... looks pretty slick and futuristic.

cannot wait for the week of Nov 3... Lollipop is going to just be so much fun. Probably the 'biggest' change from a previous os in Android history so far, imo

Any comments about the battery life of the Nexus 5 would be appreciated. Love my Nexus 4, but the battery life when I am out and about is killing me.

My N4 battery was sucking bad... it got worse and worse over the 4 year.

Battery life on the N5 is supposed to be mediocre. However, Lollipop is supposed to increase it significantly (like 30% I think). I took mine off the charger about 5 hours ago and I'm at 60% and I've been toying with it a fair ammount since its my new toy.

So, I'm thinking post Lollipop, it will get me through the day 98ish% of the time, which is good enough.

depends how you use your phone, tbh

I always get thru the day on it... w about 3-3.5hrs of on screen time. LTE/wifi... location services on.

The battery on the n5 isnt very big... so some misconstrue that as poor battery life.

if you LOVE widgets galore and every service on, ya... youll need to recharge.

you use it like a normal human being, you should be more than fine.

I can get through a day with mine of moderate use. The N5's default brightness is pretty high as well which makes for a nice screen but does eat battery.

AnandTech's review of the iPhone 6, which normalizes for brightness, shows the N5 to be a middle-of-the-pack performer on battery life and much better (almost 50%) than the N4.

I love my N5 and unless Google produces a next-gen version, I'm going to stick with it for quite some time. The N6 is just too big for my tastes. And too expensive.

I'll echo everyone else comments on it being just OK - less than desirable, but will still get through a day of normal use without feeling the need to conserve juice. I added the app Battery Doctor and it's helped extend battery life with no real drop off in performance. After 24 hours from full charge, I'm typically at 35-50% power the next morning.

this is exactly what is horrible about phones without replaceable batteries.

If you had an LG or Samsung you just keep an extra battery on you when you're going to be out an about and thus not a slave to a charger and when your battery hits like 5% you turn your phone off, pop in a fresh battery, and continue to enjoy your life

If I had a Samsung I'd have to look at Touchwiz everytime I turned it on. No thanks. I've done that before and it sucked.

Thanks, but I don't want to have to carry around an extra battery. I really would like to see more phones concentrating on battery life as opposed to all the latest and greatest processors and ultra hd displays. My ideal phone right now would probably be the Sony Xperia Z3 compact. Love the size, and its battery should last a couple days of moderate use. But I don't want to spend 500 dollars off contract.

This is so dumb. You buy one of these and then you have power for your phone or tablet or whatever. I really don't understand why someone would buy a phone with a replaceable battery when there are cheaper, better, smaller solutions. :P

Swipe right your in day view, again your in week view, again in month view. In any of those views swipe up or down and advance to the next day week or month. If your in month view and you want to see a particular week swipe left on that week. If you want to see particular day hold day and swipe other direction. Sync all calendars. Press hold day to set Apointment. Best widgets ever. I seriously could go on and on. I actually saw a recommendation from an earlier post and downloaded it. Slight learning curve but once mastered you'll laugh at the crappy Google app.

That, and there's no stock Android option offered by Samsung with the same features of this phone at its price point.

i get those that just dont want to carry around an extra battery but for those that do, i never understood the aversion to just carrying around something like this

Yeah, and enjoy walking around with your phone tethered to another device via a USB cord that you hope doesn't get knocked out in your pocket for the next 4 hours. Convenient.

ETA: Not to mention how fun it is when your phone is 2 years old and now your battery, which used to be great, has to be plugged into one of those things after 4 hours of use instead of being able to just swap it out with a brand new battery that works like the 1st day you got your phone.

I've had non-replaceable phone batteries before. Never again. Never.

I used to have a replaceable battery on my Motorola StarTAC. I understand the benefits just fine. I've since moved on from my StarTAC. There's a number of people in the must have removable battery camp so it's not like your Datonn-weird. I just thing it's a strange feature to get hung up on.

This x 1000000.

No way is a portable charger...cheaper, better, or smaller than a replaceable battery.

I have a 2013 Nexus 5 and the battery sucks, IMO. After an 8 hour night shift (so maybe 3 hours of use) I'm usually at 30%.

I didn't know there was a difference between an app so I dont want to confuse you. My understanding is that it is an app but when you download it it also has widgets you can use. I use the full screen widget. So it takes up a complete page on my phone but shows me my schedule between 8 and 5, it also shows the month and some other thing. If you want active view you click on it and it launches the calendar.

I use it with g mail but will work with yahoo etc. I have about 6 different calendars imported to it (family members). I dont know if it will work with exchange. When I set up a meeting it will either give popup, sms or email notification. Can auto fill alarms for every event. So basically create a template. Also say im in month view and have 10 meetings on a particular day. Click on the day and a box opens with tabs that will have an individual tab for each meeting. Download the free version and check it out. You may get frustrated at first trying to figure out all the diferent views but once you get it down it is awsome. Also when you buy it the give a percentage to some wildlife fund in aferica or something. Kind of cool of them to do that.

UPDATE on Note 4: Really enjoy the phone. Battery life is tremendous. Easily go the day with heavy use. Charges super fast too. Still havent used/learned to really take advantage of the s pen. Overall I would highly recommend this phone. I've also read that Samsung has hinted to updating the phone with lollipop sometime in november.

Someone above mentioned getting the nexus 6 because it has 32gigs of storage vs 16 on the note. Who needs that much storage? I understand before apps like spotify you'd put all your music on it but now its not needed. I can easily expand my phone to 128 gigs if i really need that much space but I highly doubt I would ever use that much space.

Someone please explain touchwiz to me like im an idiot. I have it, no idea what it is
Its like a skin over the top of android. It works well as far as im concerned and im perplexed at all the hate it gets. I have no problems at all with it.
Its really something only people who are REALLY REALLY into their phones care about. I bet that's 0.5% of all android users. The rest of us are like AcerFC and could give a F about it as we dont even notice it.

Boots,

I think it is HIGHLY optimistic to think Samsung phones will get Lollipop in November... I think even getting it in 2014 would be a pretty big surprise, imo.

Usually Nexus devices are the test subjects for a release or two, before other devices get the release, tho it may be slightly different this time.

The MicroSD slot makes it all moot (and actually makes it an advantage for the Note 4), but there are plenty of reasons why people would need all that extra storage.

Spotify lets you download the songs to your device which I always do. No sense spending all that data streaming with the aggressive data caps of modern carriers, and of course if you stream it you can't access it on an airplane or out of service range. Same goes for GPS and downloading offline maps when you're going out into a rural area or out of the country.

That's not to mention movies/tv shows on your phone. I would think people buying phones with giant crisp screens would be more likely to use them for movies.

Normally I would agree with you as Samsung is loath to release an update. However this time they have the BUZZ of a new version of Android and the new Nexus. Note is more expensive then Nexus and I think Samsung will aggressively try to compete with it and try to level the field by offering the new OS on their flagship asap. Perhaps not November but surly by the end of the year. They already are competing for share against the iPhone and all the iBots who are buying them. They dont want to lose more against the Nexus. Just my guess.

could be. I have one and dont know because if i need more memory I'll buy a card. Cant with the Nexus.

I've had my Nexus 5 for about a week now and am slowly adjusting to it coming from an iPhone 5. If any one else is switching here is what I did to prepare for the switch:

- I moved all of my contacts from iCloud to Google by going to iCloud.com and exporting all of the contacts to .vcf and importing to Google contacts

- I moved all of my calendar items to my gmail calendar. Had to do this one by one with all of my appointments by opening/editing the item and changing the calendar in the drop down...not as time consuming as is sounds.

- Shut off iMessage when I ordered the Nexus 5...didn't work. Some messages from iPhone users to me are still lost in the iMessage ether. Not all of them just intermittent ones

What I miss from iPhone:

- Lock screen notifications. This should be coming with Lollipop so look forward to that update

- Physical switch for silent/ringer, seems more assuring that your phone won't ring at an inappropriate time.

- Battery percentage in the notification bar...also battery in general, iPhone just seems to manage power better.

- I think the radio is not as good...e.g. same location, iPhone shows LTE, Nexus shows H...what is H?

- Message app...Hangouts seems harder having to always choose hangout or SMS to send messages. I tried Textra, but for some reason when sending a group text (MMS) iPhone users could get the group text, but Android (Samsung Galaxy) could not. So switched back to Hangouts

What I appreciate about Nexus:

- Google Now. The cards it provides are eerily useful. I get traffic/accident notifications. ETAs for destinations where Google Now thinks I am headed to like work in the morning or home in the evening. Showtimes for movies when I am near a theater. Directions to restaurants that I recently searched for...etc

- Widgets. So far I am only using Dashclock, Hangouts, and Calendar

- Screens not cluttered with icons for Apps

- Choice about launcher and icon packs...using Nova and Belle UI icon pack. I should probably just buy the pro version, but will I get the updated when Lollipop is released or will I have to buy it again?

- Screen size...Kindle reading app is actually usable

I have not rooted yet, but want to try tasker. I'd love to automatically disable my lock screen when I arrive home and enable when I leave home. I think you have to be rooted for this.

Yah. All these can be done on nexus 5.

I am in Mexico and the google Now cards show some pretty cool things.

Maybe one of the tech guys can help me

Three times in the last week, my phone has restarted itself as I used a map app. First it was google maps. Thought maybe it was the app. Downloaded waze and happened again this morning.

Is it a app issue or a phone issue. Still have a few months left on my year so if its phone, ill go see what I can do
