Commentary/Rationale for my last two picks.
6.11 Rod Smith (WR3)
I take back everything bad I ever said about Rod Smith. He's a stud. I did say I was not so hot on Rod/Jimmy, but 20 picks later, he looks like a diamond. Call it draught goggles I guess, or maybe slevin's smashed my Rogers dreams and made me adjust my expectations with his pessimism. Rodney is old. He's not terribly fast, and never has been. He's not even that big. But he's performed well for quite a while now, plays through injury, and should come real close to 1000 and 5 Td's with a stroke of luck he could grab 7 Td's for me and be very valuable. I don't really like Plummer throwing to him, but as a 3rd WR, and my 6th overall player, he is alright as a placeholder. I can play the matchups a little bit if I need to, and if one of Rogers/Andre stay in the mediocre range, which is a definite possibility, it'll be nice to have a vet to slide in that I can feel confident in.
Mostly I made this pick to draw raves from the masses.
7.4 Byron Leftwich (QB2)
There are a couple of RB's and couple of WR's that I would like to add, but the number of starting QB's is running low. Pepper is going to have a bye week, and DID get injured last season, so even the tank can get dented, as much as I hate to admit. I wanted Tom Brady for this spot badly, but Red stole him from me. Brady was a real value at this point. He throws every friggin down. But, I had to settle for Leftwich. I flip flopped with Garcia, and it was truly hard to decide between these guys, but Byron won me over. I think, and now hope, JAX will draft another WR. Jimmy and KJ are decent, and a 3rd WR would make this corps look respectable, especially a burner to open up the field a little. I shied away from Garcia due to the fact that he's on a new team, and a team that perennially disappoints. Garcia makes me look accurate passing the ball. He is fond of "the McNabb". A maneuver best described as running forward, while simultaneously with a sweeping overhand throwing at the ankles of the intended target. I am not fond of that.
Leftwich is a beautiful passer, and has a lot more upside (and downside, I know) than Garcia. I felt I had to go QB here to both put the squeeze on the 3 teams without QB's, and assure myself of a quality backup in case of emergency. I have a feeling the QB pool will shrivel considerably before my next pick, and I have no desire to roll out Tim Couch on my bye week. I could be wrong, maybe teams will elect to fill rosters or draft kickers, but I think there will be a few QB's taken soon.
