Alone ( A real survival type show) (1 Viewer)

Great Season.

Roland really owned this.  They kept playing up how lean the ox was, but then he still has bone marrow to share with his sister.  He could have lasted longer.

Too bad for Callie, once she got frostbite, it is really difficult to keep that part warm.  She would have made it otherwise I think.

Kielyn just couldn't get enough fish, was really hoping she would have made it longer.  Her lack of sunlight took a toll.

Fowler now in 3rd place with 87 days (not the arctic though)

Hope they keep this format.

Rock House.

How he knew exactly what he needed out of a shelter, found the material, and went about building it with brute strength right from the start when he was at full strength.

The key to both Callie and Roland's shelters were the chimney.

Callie got that clay and smoothed her's out.  Roland built his as a bump-out.  Did you notice how much creosote was built up at the top of his chimney the final day when we got a good look around his place?

Too many people got taken out by fire on that show and Kielyn had to deal with smoke and wasted valuable energy late in the game re-configuring hers.

One day the temperature was -53 below zero F.

Has anyone experienced that sort of temperature?  Can't imagine living in those shelters in those temps with only an open fire that you have to stoke to keep it running.  Oh and then I think of Starbucks Joe, lol.

Yeah, those temps are brutal.  Someone mention they had their hands right by the fire and the back of their hands were freezing.

The Rock house was a great way for him to try and keep some heat.  The other shelters would not hold the heat at all.  Roland knew what he was doing.

I’ve been on a mountain with a thermometer that bottomed out at -30. Not only was it at least that cold, but there were 30+ mph gusting winds.

Barely enough time to construct a wall out of snow/ice, to protect our tent from the wind. Exposed skin was instantly numb, and one of my buddies got frostbite on his feet, which eventually forced us to descend.

Even with a -30 sleeping bag, frost condensed on the inside of the tent. And I drooled while sleeping, which froze to my face. My lips were pretty inflamed by the whole ordeal, swollen to the point I looked like a bearded Angelina Jolie.

Hi there.

I've been in -25 to -35 several times.  Oddly enough, never even a whisper of wind and usually sunny.  Wasn't too bad being out and preferred it over 15 degrees and windy.  Of course I was moving and not trying to sleep outdoors.  I'm sure the Northern plains FBGs have numerous experiences in this weather.

Callie said she would have her fire raging and their was frost building up on the back rocks.

One thing I don't quite understand is he had a door made from his tarp.  I get that you need sunlight especially for filming and the show doesn't exist without the cameras and yeah I noticed how Roland set up a camera on the ice in a 'white-out' and filmed himself walking when he obviously had to go back to pick up the camera to get the footage.  Phoney-staged.

I worked at a ski resort up in the mountains of Colorado.  The first year we 'would' have set an all-time Colorado low temperature but the town thermometer froze at -56 below zero F.

A few years later during the Christmas rush we had to get to work an hour early which sucked because the bus line wasn't running so we had to hitchhike to get to work.  Normally not an issue but this day it was only -27 below zero F.  I THOUGHT I had enough layers on when I left the house and had walked about a half mile when I realized I was in trouble, the cold cut through five layers and was stabbing into my chest.

I looked up at the bank sign that had the time and temperature that showed -27 below zero F and I got scared and considered running back home when all of a sudden I look up and..

The temperature dropped to -28 below zero F like it was mocking me.  I remember letting out a yelp but kept going.  I got a lift only a few minutes later but I'll never forget how F'ng cold I was.

Yep, no wind when it gets that damn cold but you have to be prepared.

When I experienced -56 below I had on a full snorkle parka and don't recall it being that cold but I was prepared.

Did anyone ski that day?

I’m usually a first lift, pack a granola bar and skip lunch kinda guy, but I couldn’t tolerate extended periods below -10 skiing. To her credit, my Hawaii born-and-raised wife was willing to stay out a little longer. I think she enjoyed the role reversal of badgering me to do another run, plus she wears a few more layers regardless of the temperature.

They close the upper mountain when the temps dip -20 zero F but the lower mountain was open and busy.

Roland is easily the best person they ever had on this show and likely ever will have.

I laughed so loud at the end where the showed 3 weeks worth of wood behind him. Hour earlier they tried to drum up drama by pretending like he was running out of wood. :lmao:  Guy ate bone marrow before he left.

Roland had 2 cords of fire wood chopped and split on day 100.

LOL at the white out drama.  You aren't setting up a camera showing you walking to shore if you're concern about not getting back.
:lmao:  I said that to my wife. They showed him walking off to the distance and disappearing. Lol he had to go back to get the camera.

If I remember right, the first two seasons, I don't think anyone killed anything big. Other than fish, mice, and maybe a squirrel, there was no game caught. Then like in season 3, someone finally got a bird with an arrow. It was a huge deal.
This is what I recall, too.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here in that I really did not like Roland on a personal level.  Great contestant and worthy winner, sure, but just not likable to me in the way Jordan was.  Jordan was completely humble, while Roland just talked all the time about how he was the best.  I was rooting for Kielyn, but again I understand that Roland was more deserving.

Now there's moose, musk ox, wolverines, countless rabbits, porcupines... Not sure if they're just getting better hunters, or the location just has more animals. But it's fun to see. critters
In the Alaska location they were tucked between an ocean and a cliff as I recall.  Most critters don't like walking hills any more than we do.  Fishing from shore is much easier in a lake than an ocean too.  That said, I'm surprised there was that much game in those cold areas.

Oh I am certain I would find Roland to be a despicable person IRL but I found him fascinating in the context of the show.

Great show. Never watched before and just binged the season. Fun characters.

As someone's who loves bare bones camping and below-freezing camping.... I Loved the survival insights.

I've never camped in anything ever close to those temps... I think our closest was -5F or so and that was bitterly cold in a tent. The only time I've ever had my mummy bag cinched down w as small of an opening as I could get, with a wool blanket over and under me. Thermarest was a godsend. Can't imagine -30 or -50... even in a makeshift shelter with fire.

Roland is an odd dude but his survival knowledge / skillset is the most comprehensive I've seen. From using the brain for leather/lip treatment... burning the porcupine to maintain fat stores.. finding pockets of fat in lips, eyes, marrow.... utilization of various hide sections for functional needs (ball sack pouch).... Building the meat locker for the ox to stave off predators.... Butchering/processing skills....  tanning the ox hide inside his roof while also providing insulation.

Dude just knows his ####.

I imagine they had to cut a LOT to make it seem like the guy was even remotely in danger. It was over for me when the guy used brains to lube up something. Next level.

Truth.
You aren't starving if you're using a nutrient Dense fat source to make your gloves softer

He only put his heavy parka on toward the end. In one scene he was talking about how bitterly cold it was, and his jacket was unzipped and he just had a thermal Henley and base layer under it  :lmao:

I was hoping to see him put that Musk Ox skin/fur/hide to 'better' use.

In -53 zero F he had a tarp for a door.  I thought for sure he would use that Musk Ox to create an air tight door or we'd see it in use as a blanket/comforter.  Roland said he was going to bring it down and use it over his sleeping bag when it got really cold but we never saw that used that way.

Using it up on the ceiling as insulation and to tan it was great but I thought that was the first step and he'd use it for direct warmth or have it as a much better option for his tarp door.

I think Roland even recognized this trait in himself. He said something along the lines that he has had a tendency to be “to much” or to strong for most people. He said that even when he was around other people he felt like he was by himself.

We just started mimicking the way he talked. We tried to come up to the equivalent to “Rock House” “Danger Rock” and my personal favorite “Calendar Tree” in and around the house. It’s been a few fun days around here. 🤣

Sucks to get a med evac on day 89 when lasting that long would have won any other season.  Was thinking she should have put some flat rocks around the fire and put them into her boots as make shift toe warmers, but might not have had the extra room in her boots.  Or made some sort of bag that she could bring some larger warm rocks with her when she was out on the ice.  Of course I thought of that sitting on my couch.

When they showed Roland's sister walking up Rock House, part of my was expecting Roland to charge out the door and try to club the unexpected vistor to death.

Next season should be, last 100 days and get a million, then get a 5k for every day past that, see how long they can last.  With all the wood Roland had, and his leftover food reserve he could still be out there.

They can create all the drama they want and talk about lean meat or what not but if you kill a big animal it's pretty much game over. Two seasons in a row now.

Roland and Jordan could have stayed out there all winter.

He was just toying around at that point he knew he was in.
Definitely. He was stocked up no problem...edited together to make it seem at least a little dramatic as to whether he's get there.

The desert marrow to share and lifetime supply of neatly stacked firewood were telltale signs.

Still love that he clubbed that porcupine instead of...oh- any other method of dispatching it.

Felt really bad for Callie. She was making it 100 days no problem if not for the toes. Even that much more impressive considering she'd never done this stuff in extreme winter conditions.

On Grizzly Mountain, bears are the top of the food chain. A new season of Alone premieres Thursday, June 3 at 9:30/8:30c. Watch only on The History Channel and the HISTORY app.
I'm remembering S1 when that one guy had bears sniffing around his tarp covered sleeping spot the first night...tapped out the next morning.

Nfw I go near any of that..other than watching on tv. Looking forward to it!

I have camped in the back country of griz territory more than a few times.   Got knocked over by a black bear up in Alaska ... while in my tent.  I won't go into detail but it can get chippie.

I'll be watching.

Would love for you to share the details.
1990 up in Valdez Alaska while working in a fish processing camp.  The town closed down the makeshift camp next to the plant so workers were forced to 'seek out' accommodations around town.  Many illegally bushwacked campsites in the woods while me and my buddy used the local campsite.

Their is a looooooong story about my buddy leaving out peanut butter and waking me in the middle of the night, clapping his hands to scare the bear but unwittily treeing the sow bear's cub up the tree right next to our tent forcing a very scary situation.  That was just the start with that bear and cub.

The night it 'HIT' me and knocked me over in our tent was truly terrifying.  The bear had run off a few other campers in the park, one was a 'friend' who thought it would be 'funny' to throw a dog treat right next to our tent the night he was fleeing the campsite.  Haa haa.

The bear ran UNDER our rain flap and smacked me in the back with it's body trying to get the dog treat.  That caused me and my buddy to set off a bottle rocket attack which ended in hilarity of sending one too long and the bear turning and running right at us and a bottle rocket with a  short fuse blowing up in our hands but scaring the bear back into the woods.

Three years ago I was solo camping on a very small island.  I won't disclose where but it was in the back country of a NP.  I saw steaming urine of a large animal within the first fifteen minutes while scouting out my campground, thought it was an elk so I didn't give it much thought.

A few days later I saw the scat and undeniable tracks of a large griz.  I didn't realize how small the island was but it had to have been very close.

The day I was breaking down camp to leave I saw a HUGE claw mark on the newly painted bear box.  That freaked me out because it wasn't there the previous day.  I got out quick.

Those pale in comparison to the most terrifying encounter I had in the back country but I won't speak of that on these boards.

Amped for season 8!

They need to make a fantasy/betting game for it.

I forgot this was on last night so I started watching about a half hour late... and fell asleep about a half hour after that (bag)
