Alone ( A real survival type show) (1 Viewer)

I love this show. I think Nate has a chance to take this thing. He has that mental toughness and he is accustomed to being away from his family.
Nate should be a favorite, though you never know what could happen.  His mental toughness and attitude are extraordinary, and he has the skills and smarts.  And as a bonus, he’s super-likable.

I just watched and was a lot more impressed by this group than the first week’s.  I like the lady from Maine, but like one of the guys the first week, she’s just starting off soooo skinny.  Seems like they should have added a few fat reserves before coming on.  Did no one learn from Dave??

Pit house - First thought was hope she isn't at the bottom of a hill.  She is near the lake, so any rain and she could have a nice covered swimming pool.  Once she makes it to the freeze it will be a big advantage

Boat - I wouldn't have gone in that until I had added the outrigger.

I think it was boat guy, but someone changed into their "hiking" clothes and mentioend how tight they were, so it seems they may have gone with the "start the show fat" idea.

Swimming bear towards you- yeah I am tapping

Had the exact same thoughts top to bottom

  • Pit house 4 feet above the lake level sloping to lake.
  • Late September the water table will be low till spring.
  • Far 'enough' from shore - 'should' be safe from waves.
 I think she's good.

Interested to see how the boat 🚣‍♀️ drama unfolds.

He lives on an island up in AK so he knows how to read a lake, the winds, the jetties/currents.  I anticipate a few anxious moments out on the lake but I think that gamble could pay off.

I would definitely want to have a few extra pounds on me before going out there. Heck I tell my wife every day I am just preparing for my Alone callback. :D

I just wonder if it wouldn't be a smart strategy to use one of your allotted items as some form of food--like military biscuits or the gorp. It seems you have two camps of people--the shelter first people and the food first group. You have seen both groups fail if they only get their primary goal met and don't even get to doing the other thing. if you had some sort of food you could rely on out of the box, you could focus all your energy on the shelter building. I don't know, just something I was thinking of.

the pit house woman's accent vacillating between American, English and Irish is bothering me more than it should.

I may be wrong, but I think the 10 items are chosen from a list provided by the show. So likely not even an option to bring food.

Looks like you can choose to bring food if you give up something else:

Food

  • 5lbs of beef jerky (protein)
  • 5lbs of dried pulses/legumes/lentils mix (starch and carbs)
  • 5lbs of biltong (protein)
  • 5lbs of hard tack military biscuits (carbs/sugars)
  • 5lbs of chocolate (Simple/complex sugars)
  • 5lbs of pemmican (traditional trail food made from fat and proteins)
  • 5lbs of gorp (raisins, m&m’s and peanuts)
  • 5lbs of flour (starch/carbs)
  • 2lbs of rice or sugar and 1 lb of salt

Yeah, was just coming to post that I’m totally wrong. Full list here:

https://elementbushcraft.com/alone-survival-gear-list-and-prohibited-items

My guess is that most folks simply feel that bringing an item that will last the full time is a better choice than something that will be gone in a few days.

That list is dated.  It says last updated for season 4.  Here is the current list, from the Alone website.  You can still bring food but the quantities are significantly lower:

https://www.history.com/shows/alone/articles/gear-list

I was surprised to see food on the list as well.  I think it would be a good idea to use one of my items on food just so you can focus on the shelter and getting acclimated to the new environment before having to focus on food.

I’m definitely bringing two pounds of jerky, even if it doesn’t have much fat.

Could really help sustain if you hit a dry spell with food.

1.  Tarp

2.  2 pounds of jerky

3.  sleeping bag

4.  ferro rod

5.  pot

6. hatchet/axe

7.  fishing line/hooks

8.  gill net (I haven't seen if the lake is gill net friendly, so I could nix this)

10.  Bow

Notable Omissions

cord/rope

sharpening stone (I only recall a few contestants use one of these)

canteen/water bottle

I'd switch out the jerky for the saw.  I'd imagine that would be a plus calorie decision.

What does the saw do that the axe/hatchet can't?  It seems like for a lot of contestants it's one or the other.

Cuts building material to correct length probably 2x faster/easier than an axe.  I'd use the axe for felling  trees and splitting firewood and smashing a bear in the noggin.

So you go axe and saw.  gotcha.

Leaning that way but I suck with an axe.  I think the saw would save more calories than the 2 pond bag of jerky, especially if I was going the log cabin route.
In bear country I’m 100% going log cabin route.

I’m still trying to figure out why that dude wasn’t sleeping in his partially built log cabin.

Is there someplace that publishes the list of what each contestant brought with them? That would be a fascinating read and comparison.

I also wonder if them not bringing any food part is pure ego. At this point anyone who’s watched has seen the food almost always becomes the issue.

Here’s what I’m bringing to the first season of ALONE: fat, scared and likely to die

1. Beef jerky but the fatty kind.

2. Bear repellent.

3. A tarp, but one that I will just put over myself like a big warm blanket.

4. M&M’s for the sweet tooth. Peanut.

5. A Bible. I’ve never actually read it but I’m gonna need god out there for real.

6. Charcoal briquettes to start a fire.

7. Lighter fluid.

8. An ax, but I don’t know how to use it. It’s there to make the bear think I’m cool.

9. A chainsaw just so the noise of it at 3 am will freak the other contestants out.

10. Floss. Can’t imagine getting berries stuck in my teeth.

My wife couldn’t get past it. SHE IS FAKING BEING BRITISH
me the first time she talked:  huh, is that a hint of an English accent??

me the second time: was that an Irish accent????

me when she said she's originally from Wyoming in a perfectly generic American accent:  👀

1. Sleeping bag

2. Pot

3. Knife

4. Saw

5. Food ration

6. Ferro rod

7. Snare wire

8. Fishing line and hooks

9. Bow and arrows

10. Paracord

Nate is smart.    He sets a trot-line and nabs a good-size trout while expending no calories, so he's making a shelter and feeding himself at the same time.   Pit-house woman and log cabin guy have both said they're sacrificing food for shelter, and hoping to start getting food once the shelter is in place.   That just seems unnecessary when you could put a line in the water and put out a couple snares while you build.  Maybe it doesn't work, but it's low-risk because it doesn't take much time or energy.    Log cabin guy's 4 mile walk seemed especially dumb.  He wasted a lot of time and used a lot of energy for nothing.

Didn’t one of the dudes come right out and say his internal monologue voice is an awful fake Scottish accent too?

he did. and he talked with his fake accent, but i don't think he's trying to pass himself off as actually having a Scottish accent. he acknowledged that it's ridiculous.

I’m very interested in that underground shelter.  Her construction skills were impressive.  It isn’t exactly Rock House but still looks solid.

Callie said there was ice in her fireplace.

To me that screams that the log cabin design iisn’t warm enough and you need a shelter with earth/rock insulation to stay warm.

Finished S1.  Alan man.

What are the top two or three seasons from S2 to S7?
I'd rank them 7,6,2,3,5 (returning contestants),4 (two person teams).   My favorite contestant ever was in Season 2, but he taps after 3 weeks because he got bored, but he could have survived indefinitely.

We are just getting caught up with this season and started episode 2 tonight. My wife, my son and I are like, “is this woman’s accent changing?” We think she’s a fake but are intrigued with her pit house.

I'm about the same here, though I liked 6 better than 7, and 3 better than 2.  I didn't even watch 4 as I hated the premise.  One of my favorite of all contestants, season 3, also tapped earlier than necessary because she felt she'd accomplished what she wanted.

Btw, was he the guy who'd set up his own bowling alley and other games?  Whoever that was, I loved that guy.

Yeah.   He whittled dice and created a football game.   He also had a table, chairs and a sink with running water.

Same with that dude in 6.  He built like a fricken house with chairs and had tons of food.

*didn’t he build a washing machine too so something like that?

I'm shocked at the # of people who are trying to find themselves or prove something or blah blah blah.

If I'm ever on the show (narrator: he will never be on the show), I'ma look right at the camera (Day 1 - 7:36am)...

"I'm here because even if I have to stay for 208 days to win the $500k you're paying me $100 an hour, 24-hours a day, to do it."

I knew they were paid if they won. I thought you were saying everyone was getting paid something. I understand what you are saying now.
I wouldn't be surprised if they got a per diem.

I think Survivor contestants do.

I guess I thought everyone was gambling they were going to win the $500K and just quit their jobs or they had income from other sources like their significant other, family, savings, etc. to float the family until they came home.

The per diem doesn't pay that much, but, on Survivor I think there's an escalating set of payments... 2nd place still pays like 100K? But first one out you might only get 5K? And it ramps up from there?

I don't think many people quit their jobs, but a few seem to have the type of job where you can take 40 days off and not have it matter. Models, actors, baristas can do it easily. Union teachers, sure. Anyone with a government job (mailman, cop, firefighter, etc).

Plus Survivor is a huge show on a network.

But I imagine these guys are getting a little sumpin sumpin for the effort. Likely nowhere near Survivor per diem numbers, but something.

A lot that do well seem to have their own related company to teach primitive skills.  So there's pay in the way of free advertising also.

Cracking up in S2 now.

The Cop, Barb's Guy, Sweat Lodge, Black Guy and Stumpy are all out already.

So Spanished, who seems like he could comfortably stay in the wild for 1000s of years, is up against the Starving Christian, Potty Mouth, Hot Bear Lady and Vet Guy.

It's like watching Tom Brady play peewee football for half a million.
