Did he blow his talent load in "Homicide Life on the Street"?

His Detective Frank Pembleton was one of the best characters on television.

I haven't seen him do anything close to as good since.

I've seen him in a handful of other short lived roles that are good - but nothing like Homicide.

House MD

Glory

Men of a Certain Age

He was also excellent in The Tuskegee Airmen as Col. Benjamin Davis.

And another vote for B99. Love that show.

What was the FX show he had about being a thief in New Orleans? I thought that had potential but only lasted one season. FWIW, I think he's been pretty amazing in everything he's been in. And the range of those characters is quite huge.

ETA: Just looked it up and the show about him being a thief was called Thief. :bag:

I guess I should have worded my original post a little better - I think he's a tremendous actor as well - in everything I've seen him in....What I don't understand is why isn't he in more roles where his talent front and center. He's one of those guys that when I see his name in the credits or a preview, I will always give whatever it is a looksee.

I'm disappointed I don't see more of him in better roles.

He's awesome, and I think his role on 99 helps show his versatility. I can't speak to why he isn't "front and center" more, but I guess some actors just are better not being the lead, but having important roles.

That said, On The Rocks, your avatar drives me nuts every time I see it...Makes me dizzy, can induce headaches, etc....not because I have a thing for 4 eyed, 2 mouthed Asian girls.

Well, Homicide was probably one of the best shows every on television. He was the best character on that show. Huge fan of his and I'll give anything he is in a view. Awesome in Glory, Tuskegee Airmen. His character was compelling in Last Resort even if the show was weak. The only time I thought his talent was wasted was in the Rise of the Silver Surfer. I think he did that movie for the cash. His character was a joke.

I need to give Homicide another watch. It'll be interesting to see how the show stands up to the test of time.

I own the first two seasons on DVD. It's still outstanding. You'd have difficulty coming up with a better ensemble cast than the original Homicide cast, especially when you consider that this predated Belzer and Secor becoming more shticky/cliched in later series.

I was going to mention this. Really liked it, like I do most FX shows, not sure why it or Lights Out or Terriers didnt last more than a season.

I think Don Cheadle stole all his better roles.
