Andre Ellington - RB - Clemson. (1 Viewer)

Same thing played out with Jamaal Charles. Cream risen. Congrats to those of you that have him as your RB2 or Flex.
people forget how much had to go right for charles to just receive the lesser part of the committee, let alone his current lead back position. larry johnson had to call his coach a slur. then they still ran him in a committee with kolby smith. then, despite putting up like 1k yards in half a season, they still preferred to give the ball to a washed up thomas jones more the next year.

now, charles has one of the few coaches that doesnt pigeonhole players with preconceived notions about size and role.

ellington will likely never get such an opportunity or coach.

Yep, Charles had to wait on Haley to get out.

One of the most frustrating things to deal with. Watching coaches continue to play a vastly inferior player. Not sure Mendenhall is even a top two back on this team.

He's a good young player and last week was an ideal opportunity for him. Got exactly what I needed on a bye week, won't start him rest of season. Was probably his best game this season. Arians obviously loves the guy, he doesn't want him hurt. That's a good thing. He'll get enough carries to be relevant and has a chance to improve the next couple years. All the hyperbolic bs is pointless.

The Arizona defense isn't bad though which potentially helps make the run game relevant rest of season.

bolded does not look promising.

for as much as that courelion guy is grating, he certainly looks right about this guys role and arians thinking.

I'll take my position on staff anytime you guys are ready Football Guys.

Otherwise I'm going to start my own site and hand out gems like this.
What's that saying.."Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.". No offense man, but you start a lot of "player" threads and I'm assuming you miss more often than you hit. I'm also assuming it takes more than merely starting these types of threads to become apart of the staff. If you are looking to start your own site however, good luck.

Ellington clearly earned an expanded role but it's interesting to note that he only touched the ball 3 more times than Taylor last week (17:14). Moving forward, I have a feeling we're still going to see a healthy dose of Mendenhall sadly as he and Taylor share the same role. Ultimately however, I'm hoping Ellington can average around 15 touches per game moving forward which would cement his high upside flex status.
My hit rate is much higher this year than last. I actually began watching highlights of players this off-season.

Hopkins, Patterson, Lacey, Bell, and Ellington stood out to me the most. I really like Eifert, Bernard, and Michael based purely on how they looked in college.

Michael has a chance to snap.

relevant, I didn't say he'll get 20 carries a week. Even before last week, he was averaging 8-10 touches. He'll get an average of 12-15 touches/week. Lionguy looks right based upon what exactly? I agree with the skeptics that I wouldn't want to depend on riding him to my fantasy title. But Arians loves the guy or he wouldn't be on the field. If I have a stud get hurt, Ellington's upside will be nice to have on my roster when I'm playing for a fantasy title. Sell him now if you're going to but I'll go ahead and hold.

This guy could be an RB1 if given the work, but seeing how thats never going to happen with this coach, there is still value here. Given everything that has been said by Arians, I still dont see how less then 10 touches is possible. At 7.7 YPC (more if receptions are included), thats 77 yards with a chance at a TD (or a game-breaking TD that we saw this week). For me, thats a much better flex option then a lot of starting RBs.

it would be great if he got 12-15 touches. i dont expect it. hes gone 1, 6, 6, 7, 11, 12, 5. cant rely on that imo.

It amazes me how Todd Haley still gets considered for jobs, let alone hired. Ellington gives the team such a different dimension, and I'm not even an Ellington owner..

What will be interesting is to see what happens in the off season. With Arians on record saying that Ellington could be Arian Foster if he put on another 10 pounds, it will be interesting to see if Ellington does bulk up. And if he does, will it affect his speed and elusiveness. If he does out on weight though, hard to imagine even Arians could come up with an excuse to not give him Mendenhall's job.

ya it's frustrating for ellington owners.. that's the story of my fantasy football year... First it was David wilson, then Gio, then ellington.... Talented backs that just can't get on the field or put in a situation to succeed......

Ellington is fine at 199 and 5-9..... BMI is 28+ and I think Arians needs to lose weight... He's a ####### cow with a peanut brain..... Loyal to a fault because he was with mendenhall in pitt 6 years ago... he's a fool and will never have to face the consequences because of Past success.

Speaking Monday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said he was "sure" Rashard Mendenhall (toe) would resume his early-down role when healthy.

It's, of course, an indication Andre Ellington didn't earn a bigger role with his Sunday masterpiece, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Arians back off his statement a bit following Arizona's Week 9 bye. Mendenhall has been spectacularly ineffective this season, but rookie fill-in Stepfan Taylor wasn't a whole lot better on Sunday. Either way, the Cards simply aren't ready to commit to bigger snap counts for the 5-foot-10, 199-pound Ellington. Oct 28 - 3:36 PM

Hopefully it's just inane coach speak in that he doesn't want to show he's disloyal to an injured guy in the media. No way he can look at the tape for the next 2 weeks and honestly tell himself mendenhall gives him the best chance to win. If he does come to that conclusion well what can you do.

Right now what I'm really hoping for is that Mendy isn't healthy again in Week 10 and has to be rested one more week. Let Ellington get another 15+ carries... if he happens to go for another game similar to 15 for 125 and 1 TD or something then I'd really like to see Arians give him less than 10 carries a week when Mendy does return. This teams never had a rushing attack and Ellington is far and away their best chance at one.

Yeah... I kind of wrote his comment off assuming he was just a little confused? That said, Ellington aside... it does amaze me that Haley gets to still be an OC or HC anywhere these days. Same goes for Baby Shotty and a few others out there. Who have never had success or even appeared to have success.

As happy as I am as an Ellington owner with the success he's had in a limited number of touches, the reality is Arians still hasn't been proven wrong in regards to how he's using the rookie. Only after a full season of 250+ healthy touches will we really know if he can handle it. Just playing devil's advocate that this one game still doesn't prove Arians is wrong. I happen to think he is, but...

Just frustrating for Ellington owners when there's countless teams out there like the Giants, Browns, heck even teams with quality RB's like the Texans who would give anything to lean on Ellington right now - that Arians is being so conservative with the timeshare.

Haley did this same thing with Charles early on.

arians, todd haley what's the difference, both are a## clowns.

I wanted Ellington real bad but perhaps it's better that Zac Stacy fell to me this week. Ellington is only a PPR flex unless/until Mendenhall gets hurt.
I've been able to pick up both in my keep 5 league....pretty excited for the future.
you think Stacy and Ellington are worthwhile keepers? I don't think they are even close right now unless they show us something more. I assume 12 team league so 60 keepers, don't think either is there right now
Getting closer...

This has to be one the most glaring disparities between the backup and the starter and displays of stubbornness that I can remember. He literally has twice the Ypc as mendy...not a 1 yard, 2 yard difference. He's dramatically more explosive, his qb seems to be lobbying for him and Arians just seems dense.

Could you imagine if this was Wilson and he was behind a pedestrian Andre brown but they kept trotting brown out there? That thread would have been 300 pages. Ellington has essentially produced how I thought Wilson might and yet there's still talk of Mandy being the starter. I really don't get it.

Actions speak louder than words. Coaches are notorious for trying to get a leg up on opponents with misspeak in press conferences. Arians has two weeks till his next game. So maybe he's trying to keep the next opponent in the dark as to who the starting rb is.

We won't know until the end of week 10 if arians is playing dumb or really is.

He was the nfl rookie of the week...the cat is out of the bag. I would love a sproles type role for him. Would be perfect....7-8 catches, 12-15 runs.

Are you being ironic? Didn't you say Ellington was doomed to be nothing more than a COP back literally just last week? Some of us other who called Ellington being gangbusters didn't completely jump off board as soon as he had a bad week:

I'm sure his 40 time at the combine scared a lot of those who put a lot of weight on that sort of thing, but watching him play it's pretty obvious his speed isn't an issue; I'd say he's one of the quickest RBs in the draft, and quickness is more important than long speed anyway. Besides his quickness, he can cut on a dime, he has little wasted movements, does a good job of following his blockers and finding running lanes, and he actually bounces off quite a few tackles for someone his size. After Lacy and Bernard, I'd put Ellington up there with any RB in this draft, I certainly like him more than Jonathan Franklin, who most have over Ellington.

He'll probably get drafted by a team that plans to use him as a COP back that already has a bellcow, but here's hoping the Packers take him at the end of the 2nd.

I don't get it. Are you suggesting Ellington did anything besides benefit from Mendenhall going down? Not like he stole the starting gig. He performed well in absence of the starter.

Please post where I said he was doomed to be a COP running back. For this year, yeah it looks like he's stuck in a committee with Mendy.

Please you flip flop on players so much it's starting to give me a headache. Yes, how did Ellington NOT do more than benefit from Mendenhall going down? He posted the best game any Arizona RB has had since Beanie Wells rambled off for 27 carries/228 yards/ 1 TD against STL in 2011. I think you misunderstand what benefiting from a situation is in normal context. Joseph Randle is benefiting from a player going down, he's not doing all that much but he's doing enough to become a mildly startable flex player. Josh McCown is benefiting from Cutler going down by getting playing time.

Ellington is stealing a starting job. Think of this in the same vein as when DeMarco Murray started for an injured Felix Jones and then Felix Jones never started again. Also I'd love to hear how 15 carries, 154 yards, 10.3ypc and 1 TD is 'performing well'. I'd love to know what you consider performed amazingly. He only put up half of Mendenhall's entire season total of yardage in 15 carries. But yeah, he only performed well.

Guys. This is an undersized 6th Rounder! What the #### were you expecting? His value comes from his ability to catch passes and he's got pretty big hurdle in Rashard Mendenhall to overcome.

He might get some touches in the passing game, a few draws. But when Arizona is trying to establish the run, set-up playaction, etc. Why would you expect Ellington to be in the game? They're gonna somehow pound it with a 200lb Runningback?

C'mon fellas.
I'll be waiting for your spin on these words how this wasn't you saying that Ellington can't run between the tackles because he's too small. I'll be waiting...

Interesting that Arians is now saying he'd like to increase Ellington's touches, but now it's the OC that wants to limit him. Perhaps Arians is coming around, or we're just talking marginal numbers.

Either way, week 10 should be interesting after the bye in terms of playing time for both Ellington and Mendenhall.

I'd be absolutely floored if he didn't see at least 12 touches in Week 10. I just don't understand how you could possibly take a guy like him off the field. We always use that excuse around these boards of "He needs to show something that makes it impossible for the coaches to think about having him on the sidelines". Well Ellington's been doing that for weeks now and somehow he's still on the sidelines half the game. It's boggling my mind.

So what are guys getting for him in trades?
with guys like this, I usually tend to hold them and deal a more known player. Like if I had Rice, I might deal him and keep Ellington. I like taking a risk on the potential upside and often times I tend to value these guys more than my opponents so it's hard to get the value I feel they have. If the unknown upstart does hit and you can use the name value of the guy he's replacing in your lineup to upgrade another position you win championships.

seems odd and loyalty to a stubborn fault.... Im not saying wear the guy out and give him 30 touches/game, but he should have more then 5-7 touches a game. He should be right around 14-18 touches per/game depending on situations and variables of how each plays but nothing less than 14 touches.

He was the nfl rookie of the week...the cat is out of the bag. I would love a sproles type role for him. Would be perfect....7-8 catches, 12-15 runs.
I wish Sproles can get those type of touches ....
Ya was thinking same thing, that's like almost Jamaal charles ray rice workload buddy. I would love that to.

It is the same reason that the Dolphins own players are now questioning the coaching staff......Mmmmmm let's see we ran 22 times for over 120 yards in the first half against the Pat's....with Lamar Miller gashing them at will.....let's only dial up 6 running plays in the 3rd quarter...and half of them out of the shotgun (I can't stand that play).

17-17 end of the 3rd.....we know the rest of the story.

I pounded the table about this when we lost to the Saints.....we ran at will....yet never stuck with it and then got blown out....much like the way they were blown out in the second half of last weeks game.

Coaches don't know everything.....in fact there are a lot of coaches who should be out of the league. But it is a good ol boy frat house. How the hell does Shotty have a job with the Rams?

How does Dave Wandstatt still coach on any level.....any? He is an utter clueless coach. Nice guy...but not a football coach...sorry.

Coaching can make or break a team.

EG - KC Chiefs. Wow what a little bit of good coaching and a decent (not great) QB can do for a team.

The talent level is so close in the NFL.....the difference at this level usually comes down to coaching. It is really evident. Where as in College if you recruit the best.....it can cover up some lousy coaching. Talent is far more spread out over 112 teams.

In the NFL everyone can play. It is what General you have dialing up the gameplan, plays, knowing the personel to a tee and putting them in position to succeed....that tips the scale of an NFL game. Most teams can compete (some are downright awful but most can compete) and great coaching will win more games....and lousy coaching will utterly kill a team.

I can already see the Dolphins are not playing for Philbin. They are starting to quit on him......and I feel....he is a goner. He has sealed his death certificate with his rule by intimidation style down here.

Once they finish 7-9 or 8-8 (and they will not do any better than that as long as this coaching staff keeps calling the games like they have been) bye bye......clean house.

Everyone is gone. GM, HC, OC, DC.....all of it.

Again.

As far as Arians......if he trots out 14-30 yards Mendenhall again...and keeps Ellington at bay....he is a complete and utter tool as well.

Stubborn putz. Some coaches are just plain stubborn......it's not rocket science like some make it out to be (Mayock) it's freaking football. It is a human chess match.

Play the pieces that will help you win.

It's sports.....and anyone who has played competitive sports all their life.....has a valid opinion on the game.

Because it is not as complicated as it seems.

Talent evaluation is hit or miss on a grand scale. These scouts and GMs....whiff more than they hit. So when you have a hit like this kid Ellington......why hold him back?

Play the kid......he helps you win.

Not the other guy plodding for 30 yards on 14 carries......every single game.

It's a joke.

Most of these guys are not experts.....they are not.

Where did Brian Cashman come from? What was his pedigree on baseball?

Again.....not rocket science. And guys like Arians and Philbin......will be fired in short order for their lack of ability to adapt and change on the fly and admit they are wrong about how and when they play certain guys or lack there of.

The best coaches.....know their talent.

Perfect example is Pete Carroll.......last year they bring in Flynn on a big contract......they see Wilson in camp......done.

Harbough......comes in...Alex Smith....big investment....goes down...see Colin play......done.

Andy Reid...comes in....see's Charles....features him with no hesitation.....done.

McCarthy - drafts Lacy.....changes his playcalling to feature the run with Aaron Rodgers at the helm....they are winning with this.....done.

But noooooo we get to see Philbin and Sherman forcer feed a passing game that is not really that good....use Daniel Thomas who....plods and falls...has zero big play ability and to top it...we don't stick with the run even when we are dominating with it.

Morons. Fire them.

Rant over.....take a breath.

So what are guys getting for him in trades?
I got one offer this week: Ray rice straight up... I passed
As much as I like Ellington, that's crazy to pass up. If it's dynasty though, I think it could be closer.
It's a no brainer in dynasty, too.

In dynasty you almost definitely get at least one season of starting out of Ray Rice (2014) because he's not getting cut next year. Salary cap wouldn't make sense. They'll either be paying him to be the starter or paying him to be the backup and he's not bad enough for them to draft a replacement and Pierce hasn't shown enough to take over, so Rice will be starting.

With Ellington you get zero seasons of starting RB. He probably gets the Daryl Richardson treatment in the offseason.

Huh? Since week one of this year he's been a rather reliable RB2 for me in dynasty. Better than Ray Rice has been for his owner. Daryl Richardson hasn't run for 100+ yards in his entire career to date. Ellington ran for 100+ in his first game as a starter. Richardson also only averaged 4.8ypc last season... even removing the 15 for 154 game from Ellington's record he's still averaging 6.4 ypc this season. Ellington has been doing more on 6 carries a week than Rice has on starter carries a week.

I'd love to know how you can make that statement with any justification. Signs are pointing significantly harder at this being more of a Jamaal Charles situation with Ellington than a Daryl Richardson situation.

I'd agree with Khy here, at least with the point that Ellington has arguably been more valuable THIS year than Ray Rice. In my league (PPR), Ellington has almost 20 more points for the season than Rice. And for most of the season, he's been a pretty good play. Rice's points per week have been more volatile than Ellington's.

I'm not so sure that Ellington for Rice is a no brainer (in terms of getting Rice in the deal). Rice has much more name brand allure, but turning that deal down and keeping Ellington is not a bad move. Labeling that move "crazy" is a bit far-fetched to me.

So what are guys getting for him in trades?
I tried packaging him with Peterson, but no bites for elite RB's. I'm thinking Ellington's value is down in my league since I was able to get him last week on waivers. I am still considering trading him for someone like Joique Bell only because I have Reggie Bush. I'm aware it is inferior value, but I want to cover myself too. I'm on the fence about offering him in trades or keeping him for depth. Arians' latest quote about increasing his carries though gives me a lot of optimism so that may be what I need to hold off.

This is a redraft non-PPR league that gives bonus points for long TDs and over 100 yards rushing/receiving (but not combined). The only thing I like about R. Rice this year is his ROS schedule. Rice has been hurt once (although he seems to have fully recovered) and has a low YPC. Other than the MIA game, his highest number of carries has been 15. Plus, BAL seems determined to be a passing team with Flacco at the helm. If I thought BAL would lean on Rice as the focal point of the offense I would be more inclined to make that trade, but I'm just not sure it's going to happen.

Finally, I'm trying to trade for E. Lacy instead.

I have NEVER once flip-flopped on this guy's talent. All I've simply tried to get across is that the presence of Mendenhall severely caps him.

Look over in Atlanta, Rodgers was tearing it up. Jackson comes back and Rodgers only ends up with 4 carriers.
