Another WWYD Airplane Scenario (1 Viewer)

You're on a plane in an economy window seat. There are three seats in your row and the aisle is occupied by a mother with her infant while the middle seat is free. An hour into the flight, the mother lowers the middle tray table and you suspect very strongly that she is about to change her child's diaper there--she mentioned the child needing a change and has a diaper in her hand.

Your move?

This is a real life scenario encountered by a friend who flies ~150-200k miles/year.

I wouldnt do anything, but thats extremely rude. I would hope the flight attendant would put a stop to it.

Non schtick answer, it probably greatly depends on my mood on the flight which would be affected by the following:

  • Is the mother milfy and have we had some friendly chatter on the flight?
  • Has the infant been fairly content and not cried the whole flight?
  • Am I going on vacation?
These could put me in a forgiving mood. I've got kids, have seen plenty of diapers. Assuming she has a zip lock to put the diaper in, it's not going to bother me.

However, if:

  • She's been a rude wench
  • Her child has been crying the whole time
  • I'm coming back from vacation or on a business trip
I'm probably protesting vehemently.

I'm not a fan of the concept of changing a kid's diaper on the same surface that someone eats on...but if I were in that exact situation, it doesn't impact me or the table -I'm- about to eat on, so I wouldn't do anything. Of course I have an 11 month-old, so at this point having baby excretions on my hands doesn't really phase me.

I've seen Airplane a bunch of times, but I don't remember this part.
It was a deleted scene. It was another flashback of Ted and Elaine's time together, but when it fades back to Ted, the woman is beating herself to death with the baby. That was considered too racy for 1980 sensibilities, so they cut it. It is available on the 50th anniversary DVD version, however.

Call the flight attendant to tell that entitled ##### to take that to the airplane restroom.

I don't care if she's MILFY. I don't want to have to smell a baby's ####-filled diaper.

I'm sort of calling BS on this scenario. Not sure how anyone could change a diaper on such a small surface.

Hit the button for the flight attendant. Ask flight attendant whether they have sanitary wipes since things are about to get messy. trust that flight attendant will do the right thing and suggest to the mother that they have changing tables in the rest room.

Alternatively use your smart phone to start filming. Most mothers would find that creepy and take the kid to the rest room. If not add to the creepy factor by asking her whether she is still nursing while checking out her chest. She will ask the flight Attendant to find her a new seat straight away.

None of this would be an issue if you were manspreading right from the beginning of the flight. (See thread on manspreading)

I had a hard enough time changing poop filled explosions with my own kids, so i would probably respond by puking on the baby.

did she ask "do you mind if I change my kid"? either way... take the kid to the restroom.

trying to rememeber what I used to do with mine on airplanes.... pretty sure I took them to restroom. may have changed a wet (not poopfilled) one if we occupied the whole row. never on the tray-table though.

This... changing a dirty diaper in the common area is HIGHLY inappropriate.

pee pee I don't really care that much

#2, I'd probably give a strong look like "really??". Or say nicely "could you do that in the lavatory?". I don't like getting into an altercation with anyone who I'm stuck being near for several hours. I'll put up with a lot.

have never seen this happen and would immediately put a stop to it. then probably need a drink due to the shock of seeing such moronic behavior up close in the wild.

If I'm in the window seat on a flight, chances are strong that I will be sleeping and wouldn't notice anyhow.

I love flying. I've fallen asleep before takeoff and waken up after landing before.

He did this by pressing the call button repeatedly until the FA came who then immediately put the mother in her place--the bathroom.

Seems pretty unsafe too. I assume the changing tables in the bathroom are a bit more sturdy than the back of seat tray tables.

Just order the lasagna. Looks the same anyway.

The woman looked at my friend and said there aren't any change tables in the bathroom. I seem to recall change tables in the bathrooms years ago.

I was recently on a flight where some lady tried to give the FA a loaded diaper when the FA was collecting trash. The FA refused and told the lady to dispose of it in the bathroom.

say, "oh, that reminds me!" then whip it out and start peeing in your little plastic cup. I mean, she'd have to be cool with it, right?

Tell her she's welcome to do what she'd like, but if that diaper comes off I'm going to start vomiting. I won't stop until the plane lands.

Well this changes my opinion a bit. Is there not a dedicated area to change the baby's diaper? Seems like the airline is just as much to blame

IIRC, some lavs don't have them- but pretty sure all airplanes have at least some with changing tables. it's never been a problem for me.

This is what I thought as well. Coincidentally I'm flying with my 11 month old for the first time tomorrow morning. Good info in here.

I would assume she doesn't know wtf she's talking about.

is the kid on the bottle? we were taught to make sure the kid was sucking on something for take-off and decent to avoid ear problems. has always worked for us (7 and 3yos) gets to be a problem sometimes on decent, when the plane starts and then circles for a while- kid would suck down a bottle and then we'd be stuck circling, them not wanting more bottle and now needing to get changed pdq.

eta: "descent" not "decent".

All schtick aside that is ####### disgusting and there is no way a diaper should be changed on a tray at your seat. You ask if she needs help getting up or go let a flight attendant know.

Yup this is our plan. I'm far more worried about the 5 and a half hours in between takeoff and descent :scared: At least now I know it's not appropriate to change his diaper in our seating area.
