As the resident bipolar I have to disagree with the bolded. We gotta work where the money is, and being creative as a living is damn near impossible when your creativity comes in manic bursts followed by hating absolutely everything you have ever looked at let alone done yourself.
You also are competing against "stable" creative people for work. Unless you offer something truly unique, like Kanye for instance, most firms perfer your creativity to be within an established box. Try making an ad for any Google product, Google will never have a "I'm on a horse" moment. They want safe "creativity", which can really chafe someone with bipolar.
Point is, I would love to become poet laureate of the US, but I need to eat in the meantime.
Totally fair. As I said in another post, I’m trying not to make generalizations or paint with too broad a brush. And I’m definitely not an expert in bipolar disorder. I spent years with someone who was well-controlled, and have met others over the 54 years I’ve been on this blue marble - creativity was a pattern I’d noticed, but I’m sure it varies wildly.
For example, my ex was in marketing. She was an artist first & foremost, but as you say, that don’t pay the bills. That said, she couldn’t focus enough on acquiring career-supporting skills until she was balanced with lithium. And again, I’m sure it’s very different for everyone & there are degrees to both the depth of the condition & the desire to remain medicated. There are always degrees to everything, so apologies if I overstepped there.
Do you think AB’s antics fit the description of manic BP episodes?
