Im A Rookie

Just watched clowney (Jets) nail two deep bombs with ratliff at QB. 160 yards, 2 tds. I know cotchery, coles werent in, but is he worth picking up? I looked at yahoos depth charts, and his name wasnt even listed. Possible deep threat with Favre?

Hi I'mHere's how we saw it heading into this game:
WR: Laveranues Coles, Jerricho Cotchery, Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, Marcus Henry, Wallace Wright, David Ball, Prechae Rodriguez
He's been the talk of camp for the WRs according to some folks. He's fast and that's always good with a guy that has a big arm like Favre. He's sort of a choppy runner but he's quick. Definitely worth rolling the dice on as a deep sleeper guy.J

Clowney was drafted by the Packers last year (5th rd). He didn't make the team, but he at least has some familiarity with Favre, for whatever that's worth.

He struck me as a Pinkston type at Va Tech and the Senior Bowl and I wasn't surprised that he was cut, but Pinkston did hang around the league for a while.

Pinkston's main problem was heart. He had plenty of skills to stick in the league and even produce as a WR2. If Clowney plays with heart, then he can go farther. Either way, this guy's a HUGE flier.

I grabbed him everywhere about mid 4th qtr :goodposting: ... hey, Jet fan anyway, and with Favre, well, why not? It's preseason, etc, but this is where it starts.

Maybe, but with Royal looking really good for DEN and Morgan getting some good pub in SF it could just be that the Va Tech offense really screws up the evaluation of the WRs.

The Hokies emphasize RB, Defense, ST, and passing in that order.QBs have been modest since Michael Vick. Bryan Randall and Sean Glennon have been serviceable at best. WRs and TEs have suffered as a result - but there have been glimpses of what these guys can do. The WR corps from Va Tech are better than their collegiate numbers.

Just another sign Ted Thompson knows what he is doing. Unfortunately, their wr corps was too loaded last year to keep him.

I'm actually stunned to see someone say, "We just witnessed the biggest blunder in sports history." I know we're in an era of hyperbole but c'mon. A month ago Favre wasn't part of the Packers game plan and the consensus was they were a playoff team with legitimate Super Bowl potential. Now, because...Brett Favre isn't on the team...it's the biggest blunder ever?!?!?Heck, that's not even the biggest QB blunder in their own division this year. The Bears decision to re-sign Orton and Grossman and let them compete for the job is worse, as is (IMHO), the Vikings doing nothing to protect themselves against Tarvaris Jackson failing to improve.
Of course not that dramatic. But yesterday was the culmination of one of the biggest managerial mishandlings in the NFL for quite some time in my opinion. This is a bottom line game. And the bottom line is that they were unable to deliver their best player to the starting line up this season. And I believe it is mostly their fault. Now all of this is based on the assumption that Favre would have been a lot better than Rodgers will be. If you don't believe that, then obviously, it's not a blunder.J
and there is no consideration for what the Packers do next year without Favre... or the next year?Eventually Favre needs to give someone something, and this back and forth stuff is  especially this year since he actually retired for most of the off-season...
Do you think Favre would have retired if Thompson or McCarthy told him he was wanted back in February?

I will bet Favre doesn't even know who he is but GB was very high on him last year, he just couldn't make the cut.

He may be worth a shot in very deep dynasty leagues so I hope that is what we are talking about. I am not near the pulse of any Jets information but we know Coles and Cotchery are the two starters and pretty solid ones. From what I have heard the Jets also really like Smith and Stuckey. It would seem Clowney has a pretty good shot at making the squad with a peformance like that and I don't think it would be out of the question that he could jump Smith and Stuckey if he outplays them in camp. I guess I am saying he has some opportunity but temper the enthusiasm because at best he could maybe be a WR3 for the Jets and presently may have earned the inside track on the WR#5 job.

fixed :) anyways I seem to remember Clowney with a sick 40 like in the 4.3's

I get the feeling it goes: Coles / Cotchery / Stuckey / Clowney / SmithSmith was a project from the start... Maybe he sticks cuz he does a lot of different things and can line up under center????But, I get the impression they want Stuckey in the Slot role and Clowney as the top back up on the ends and the deep threat....

Well, yeah - they don't call it "Beamer Ball" for nothing....

Lost in this is that Stuckey had decent stats last night as well. I still think he is the value WR in the NY Jets camp right now.

:goodposting: That catch Stuckey had on the 3rd down conversion to set up the field goal was fantastic and exactly what you want a slot guy to do.

Chansi Stuckey made his NFL debut at cornerback during Thursday night's game against the Eagles. That doesn't bode well for his chances at fantasy value as the No. 3 receiver. Coach Eric Mangini is looking to use Stuckey in a late-career Troy Brown role as both a receiver and a defensive back.

I'm holding him at the end of my bench in a very deep dynasty league, but this situation puzzles me. He was good enough for the team to keep him on the active roster despite a serious shoulder injury (broken collarbone?) at the end of the preseason, and his explosiveness intrigued me, but I'm seeing no signs that the team has him in its plans this year.

Does anyone have any more information about Clowney, his injury, and any plans to play him?

Nothin', huh? This is all I could find through Google News:

Jets coach Eric Mangini said Thursday that there is no timetable for David Clowney (collarbone) to return.Clowney impressed in preseason, but will be low on the depth chart when he gets back. "He’s doing well. He’s moving along with his rehab," Mangini said. "I’d say he’s plugging along and at some point he’ll be back with us." Sep. 18 - 3:18 pm etSource: Newsday

Stuckey has killed any chance Clowney had at fantasy relevance

PS Chancey and Stuckey, sounds like a good followup act to barnum and baily

Actually, according to reports, on 3 WR sets Keller is lining up at WR...Also, Stuckey is a slot WR and Clowney is the Jets best Deep threat with the most speed.Different roles... If one of the top two goes down, a healthy Clowney could get more of a chance than Chansi.

Jets blog

David Clowney, the Jets WR who tore up the preseason before breaking his collarbone, has been back on the field in the past few practices, but is being watched closely. Clowney is wearing a red non-contact jersey and reportedly has extra padding on his healing collarbone to protect him. It’s good to see that Clowney is back on the field and the Jets could use his deep speed to help the deep passing game, but with a pretty functional set of receivers, and Dustin Keller and Chansi Stuckey coming on strong, there’s no need to rush Clowney back into action.

Collarbones can take as long as 12 weeks to fully heal, and Clowney is now at about the seven week mark. A lot of times, doctors will tell collarbone break patients that they shouldn’t do X if X causes them discomfort. If he’s practing, then that is a good sign but I wouldn’t expect him to be ready until next week at the earliest. He should be getting close, but it’s clear the team is taking precautions and not looking to re-aggravate the injury.
