Any real hope for Ryan Mathews? (1 Viewer)

Norv came out yesterday saying the ankle sprain suffered in week 2 is finally behind him. Mathews certainly plays in a high scoring offense........so he should have enough touches in the red zone to make him a viable start. But, will the "bowling ball" continue to get the goal line work?

In one league I just picked up Mathews for DeAngelo (i may regret it, but I just couldn't stomach it any longer). What does the Shark Pool think about Mathews value going forward? RB2? RB3?

RB3 at best with little to no trade value.
"RB3 at best".........I don't have a big issues with "RB3", but "at best" sure seams a bit extreme. In the Chargers offense.....the Tolbert nursing an ankle sprain......and Mathews finally healthy (according to Norm).....it sure SEAMS to me that Mathews has some upside. Anybody else?

 RB3 at best is false. He's getting over his HAS and could be a solid #2 RB in the 2nd half imo.

I am rolling him and Sproles out this week as I think they run run run all over Houston. This could be, dare I say it, THE Game we've been waiting for?

To copy what I had said in another thread on this topic... my "guess" is that Matthews has nothing but upside at this point. He's been limited thus far for a variety of reasons and can only get better.

The Chargers are traditionally (under Norv) a "second half" (of the season) team... I can see them making a push and Matthews will have to be a bigger part of the offense.

He's a rookie... and despite this summer's hype job they don't all come out of the box like Marshall Faulk or Edgerrin James.

The "glimpses" are there, so if you've got him there's certainly hope for a good late season showing, but as one poster eluded to he (Matthews) has very little trade value right now.

This is what Chargers fans have told me about the RB situation in SD and they have said it's not likely to change:

Sproles in on passing downs

Tolbert getting all short-yardage and GL carries

Mathews gets the rest.

On a team that has a terrible run-blocking line, that is 14th in rushing attempts and 15th in yards, I don't see tons of upside unless the above changes, and Charger homer are saying they don't see that changing.

FWIW I am a Mathews owner, I just don't see any back being more than a flex play in a 3-headed committee on a team that readily abandons the run when they get behind. I hope I am wrong.

If Matthews becomes more productive on his first and second down carries which could definitely be possible with more practice time and being healthy, then there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Norv has always rewarded his bell cow with goalline carries. If he continues to produce at his current level there is no reason not to continue with what they are doing, but arguments can be made that he is going to improve.

I have faith, just swapped Beanie straight up for him. Couldnt afford to roll with both Fitz and Beanie on that ARZ offense in my starting lineup.. :hophead:

Traded Mathews(who will never start for me) for Welker (who will never start for me) in a redraft PPR.

Only telling you for value basis, but I couldn't care less for either right now.

In redraft PPR that seams fair. I felt pretty good about trading DeAngelo for Mathews, but after all the debbie-downers in this thread I'm hoping I didn't F up. I, like some, still think that Mathews has some pretty good value for one simple reason: he's the starting running back in a dynamic offense

He needs to get hot in a game and take the job, it is there for him and the coaching staff is waiting for him to take it and run with it, but he hasn't done it yet. Last week it seems like they preferred Tolbert down the stretch, but I still think Mathews will continue to get opportunities to take the job but sooner or later he needs to have a big week.

terrible run-blocking line? not true, they are actually a pretty good run blocking line this year....a lot of the misguided posts in this thread are making me want to go after mathews in all my leagues

To help others assess his value, I just moved him and a 2nd round pick in a dynasty league for Spiller and Stafford.

Interesting posts. I like him for the simple fact that Norv might be coaching for his job. Its down to him and Jonathan Stewart for me. I'm leaning towards Mathews.

I'm no grammar nazi, but if you CAPITALIZE a word, at least use the right word.

fixed

RB3 lottery ticket that owners paid a RB1 price for. Savvy owners may go down to a RB2 price (like DeAngelo) but I imagine the vast majority aren't going to deal their 1st/2nd round pick for peanuts.
