Any Trading Cards guys? (Sports, etc) (3 Viewers)

Just curious for those that send PC cards to get graded. Why do you spend money to grade if you are going to keep the cards in your personal collection?

Preservation.

Hard to damage the card once it's encapsulated.

Also authentication...would suck to have a Willie Mays RC in your family for 33 years and then you go to sell it and people doubt it's fake...or God forbid it is fake.

Grading companies offer a simple authentication with no grade.

I went in on a box of contenders with a buddy and we didn't hit much 😢

About to pull the trigger on a box of FOTL contenders by myself and then get in on some national treasures (football) and prizm (basketball) group breaks in the next few weeks.

Not even lying when I say there's plenty of value in prizm soccer right now.

Let us know so we can sweat.

Yeah I've been trying to catch up on the industry after taking a LONG time off and have seen a bunch of soccer stuff. I really only follow football so even basketball is a stretch for me but at least I know the big rookies.

Going to wait for NBA Prizm and NFL National Treasures for an online group break but I did order a box of 20 NFL FOTL Contenders today though. It'll be here next week 🤞

Is there any players anyone is trying to buy up and invest in?

NBA: Tyler Herro, Ja Morant Luminence (cant get enough of the dunk card!), Jamal Murray

AWESOME card. I got my son one for Xmas along with the Zion Luminance which is pretty sweet too
Curse you guys for making me aware of this card.   ;)   I started stalking them on eBay but seems like its tough to get a good read on the condition of the sides and corners with the image going all the way to the edges.  Decided to stop doing breaks and use the money to look for a deal on a PSA 10... should arrive today.   :pickle:

It is going to be a great day--off to a flea market that usually has some card deals, then hitting one or two card stores on the way home.  Wife is out of town--got a case of beer--March Madness on..my 16 year old daughter in tow (who loves shopping for cards). Masks and hand sanitizer will be in full effect.

But I have to point out the madness that is Panini One that just came out.  One pack per box--one card per pack at $700.00 a box. If you go over to Cardboard Connection and look at the checklist,, sure there are the possibilities of some nice pulls, but can you imagine paying $700 for this product and getting a Cole Kmet or a Jacob Eason card? Heck, half the cards listed, will not fetch you a return on your investment.

Struck out at the flea market--probably too early in the year for there to be many vendors braving the elements. My daughter is looking for a Game Boy--the original one. We have one, but the screen is damaged.

The card store was empty of most new basketball and football packs--several overpriced boxes. Lots of baseball. I wanted to open something/anything, so I ended up buying three packs of Hoops at $19.00 a pack and my best pull was a Jamal Murray numbered card.  :(

Just don't trust anyone in this industry at this point, maybe the card grading/cutting/etc corruption has always been rampant but I'm just done with it. Sorry for the tangent, this hobby has become a playground for those with too much money and too little morals. Wish you all the the best

You hit the nail on the head.

You hit the nail on the head.
Yeah it’s been pretty disappointing to see as I’ve tried to get back in the hobby. Makes me VERY leery about buying anything on secondary market. I know I’m going to lose 90% of the time with boxes but at least I know the cards are legit lol.

$19/pack?  wow
Yep, the same product we would have gotten for 4.00 a pack last year WITH A GOOD ROOKIE CLASS!!.

I have a closet full of old ( a lot junk era) wax boxes--maybe 75 boxes of various sports. I almost opened one tonight just to feel what it is like to open a wax box.

Are you looking to sell any of them?

I have a bunch of '78, '79, '80 Topps baseball cards in the attic. Complete sets I think ... With a bunch of extras.

Is it worth my time to pull these down and sell them now?

What's the best way to move them? Sell as a complete lot or sell off the individual cards that are worth something?

Nice

I was just messing with those same wxact years.

Yes, worth your time now imo.

Best way...will always depend on condition

What do you want.

2 quick ways

List as a lot for local PU on the platform of your choice.  Sell all as a lot.

The other quick way. Pull the 5-7 major cards and sell them on ebay individually.

The long way and maybe more money but definitely more work sell each set on ebay.

Been selling off all my remaining cards. Well, I may keep the 57 Topps Football. Some day maybe I'll complete it. Have 35 cards now.

The rest brought in some nice cash so far. About 20 cards left.

Just pulled down my cards from the attic today.

I have what I think is an almost complete Topps 1990 set. Might be missing 3 or 4 commons.

With about 2000 duplicates ... including 4 additional Ken Griffey Jr. And 3 Frank Thomas.

All to be in what I would consider excellent shape. (But I'm not a real card guy)

I'll give my fellow FBGs first crack ....Anyone care to make me an offer?

I can send photos.

ETA: what is this Ken Griffey Jr. Bloody Scar error card? All 5 of mine have a bloody scab on his arm.

Ozzie Smith 1979 and 1980 Rickie Henderson are the key cards there.

I just finally threw out / recycled about 5,000 1990 Topps cards a couple weeks ago.

I'm sure I had the commons you were missing, bad timing.

Careful when tossing out those commons.  There are some decent valued error cards of common players.

Decent valued as in $2-$25

I was looking at a card for sale online the other day and it had a PSA label on it -- but with a "MINSIZERQ" designation. Looks like it was slightly miscut on one side.

Do I understand correctly that PSA verifies it as "authentic" but can't grade it because of the miscut? And how much of a hit does that typically give to a card's value?

Usually means it did not meet the size requirement. Usually an indicator the card was miscut at the factory but not to be confused with a miscut qualifier which typically holds for cards at a normal size.

My dad is a football/baseball card enthusiast and recently I got the itch. Obviously all the retail locations I've looked at have been sold out, so I've only gotten a few ungraded Bobby Witt Jr. rookie cards from ebay so far. So much hype surrounding that guy here in the KC area. I don't have nearly enough disposable $$$ to be buying boxes or anything at these prices, so I'll probably be waiting a while to really expand my collection.

So I broke open my FOTL contenders box and pulled:

CeeDee Red Zone rookie auto)perfect condition!)

Kittle auto

Charles Haley auto (haha!)

Bunch of inserts so I am probably at even value based on current market but I'll get the CeeDee graded at some point and hope that I'm right about him being a stud.

you get it off the Panini site via the auction pricing deal? how much?

Ripped a 2020 prizm football blaster box with my daughter today. She's really started to enjoy football more over the last year or two and has had fun going through cards with  me. She got another couple of Cowboys and Chiefs players to add to her collection so she's happy which means it was totally worth it. I got a Justin Jefferson rookie at least.

I am going to start trying to find the retail stuff locally. If this is something she wants to get into I'd love to have a shared hobby but I can't justify a hobby box every month lol.

So glad to hear about your daughter enjoying this. This is how I got both my daughters involved in Pokemon because they would buy those packs when i got mine. I also had my wife going for a bit on Xfiles and Disney cards. However, good luck finding anything retail these days--breakers are cleaning things out and leaving nothing for regular collectors.;

Here is my situation. .I have participated in breaks for many years and I have had great success getting all my Colorado teams.Last June (2020) I paid for a break from chamaxcards. They are located out of Canada. You pay a flat rate for the team of your choice, with the value priced differently per team. I paid 39.99 USD for a 2018-19 Certified NBA Denver Nuggets case break.. I was after Porter Jr. RC's. I had completed a previous break with them for the Av's--so i felt they were a good company. but Hockey is a different beast. .

Here is the catch, the break doesn't take place until there are only 5 teams left not purchased. I waited for the remainder of teams to be sold and I wait and I wait. I finally emailed them in January of 2021 because when i searched Ebay the listing was no longer in my purchase history. They responded that now 18 of the teams had still not been purchased, but they would be willing to give me credit toward another break--no refund. When I originally purchased the Nuggets, this number was 15 teams left. Well, i didn't want another break--I wanted THIS break because Porter Jr. is really coming into his own and I believe he is going to be a star. They further stated the break is advertised on their website and they are actively trying to sell the remaining spots Out of curiosity, I go look at the listing.and the remaining spots are priced beyond belief--like to the point there is no way they will ever sell. The teams without even good RC's or stars are at a level no one will buy because there is no way you could get any value back.  I understand the Dallas spot being close to 3k, but some of the lower teams being close to 1k and there is literally not a  card that could be pulled to justify that amount.

I tried to chalk it up to the COVID/exploding basketball market., etc....but then i find this thread at Blowout---link

It appears this company makes a habit of doing this. They advertise product and then when the big name teams sell, they relist the common teams at such inflated values, there is no way the break will ever happen. Meanwhile, they keep all the money they were given on these breaks and probably use it to buy future product.

I don't care about the money--I am content to let it sit there for as long as it holds up this break because I am sure the plan is to wait me out and hope I request credit and then they relist the Nuggets at 10x--15x what I paid. I am stubborn like that, but what do you all think about this? What would you do?

That's cool that you have a shared hobby with your daughters!

Yeah I've discovered that this week lol. We'll keep trying to see what we can find. Grabbed a couple baseball packs (which I know nothing about) just to see if she cared. She doesn't lol so now I have some random baseball cards in my collection?

Going to enlist the help of some friends and family to check when they're at Target or Walmart to see if we can get lucky.

For $40 I'm petty enough to wait indefinitely lol. Very lame though.

So like a bunch of others this thread inspired me to go and see what was in my attic. I have literally 10s of thousands of random early 90s ish cards when I was like 8-12. Mostly baseball.  I can list things out if it helps but I’ve been going through the unsorted randoms and just keeping the HOF type players. Is there an easy source for the valued commons? It’s annoying because I seemed to have them sorted by teams when I was a kid so it’ll bounce from topps to fleer to donruss and from 90 to 94 to 88. There’s probably no easy way to do this right?

No easy way honestly.

If you have them sorted by years I can ramble off certain cards from sets that have some minor value
