This is all a plot to lull us into a false sense of security by the Global Warming Overlords, best known as the Illuminati. Like everything else, the Illuminati are behind the whole global warming conspiracy, and are buying up all the solar panel and windmill factories. In order to drive the price down, they stage these cold vortices, and then, when they own all the businesses, they'll hit us with the heat. People will then panic and they will sell their products at a huge profit.

I don't know what to make of those who deny that something is up. We can argue the causes, and while it's a very spurious to argue that this is not significantly man influenced, it's at least not as, to be blunt, stupid as to suggest that some significant climate change (not just a few outliers) is not at work.
My concern is not only the apparent stupidity involved in such a conclusion, but rather the fact that people seem so willing to keep a closed mind due to political stance when it actually threatens our nation's and world's well being.

Wrong decade and wrong theory. That would actually open up larger holes in the ozone layer and release more green house gases into space then causing global cooling. Part of the global warming we saw in recent decades was probably from our fixing the ozone problems and trapping more greenhouse gases. Oddly, the simplest and cheapest way we could solve the global warming problem by returning to the use of aerosols.
Maybe we ought to rush out and do something like Europe did; they found that the biggest use of renewable energy was burning firewood. Great idea. The only trouble is, why are they backing away from the policies the "best and the brightest" came up with, and why does The Economist call it: "Europe's Insane Climate Policies", and "Worse than Useless". Maybe the government doesn't always know best.
BTW, the US has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, mainly because of private enterprise, in spite of government efforts to throw impediments in its way. That is due to the use of natural gas (product of fracking), replacing much more carbon intensive electricity generation by coal.

My point is not about jumping to conclusions or pushing misguided policy without a better understanding of what is going on - that's just a reactionary approach that does as much harm as not admitting SOMEthing is up. And often that's pushed by blinding political ideology as well.
But if we can't be objective and reasonable enough to realize something's about and have a non-politically tainted discussion about it, we're potentially screwed and the ideologues from both the left and the right would be to blame.

2 things.
1. The global temperature average of both the 60s and 70s was higher than the 20th Century average as a whole. So that statement is demonstrably wrong on the facts.
2. Isn't this thread predicated on the idea that because it's cold today over much of the mainland U.S, then somehow the idea of global warming is discredited? And yet you are now saying we are in a warming trend.
By the way, a number of all-time high temps have been recorded in Alaska today, including 52 degrees at Denali National Park. Records not only for this date, but for the entire month of January.

You're partially right. This was the entity falsely accused of fabricating data. However, a review by the Inspector General of the Department of Commerce found that those claims were entirely false and without merit.sublimeone said:

Usually when you come out of an ice age, it is a warming trend. Overall, thank God, we are in a warming trend. Otherwise the Great Lakes would still be a frozen ice cube. What the heck caused that, buffalo farts? It is ironic from your graph that there was a significant cooling trend at the start of the industrial revolution. If CO2 was this massive driver of global temps, how come? Why have climate models been 100 percent wrong and grossly overstated the temperature trend for the last two decades? Do they really understand everything going on? It is pretty obvious that they are grossly exaggerating the impact of greenhouse gases and ignoring many offsetting factors that they yet to fully comprehend. As I said earlier, if we really believe greenhouse gases are the biggest threat to this planet, lets legalize aerosols and open up those big holes in our ozone layer. Most scientists blame people, at least in part, for global warming. Now, some researchers say people may be partly to blame for the cooling of Antarctica as well.
While average global temperatures have risen about one degree Fahrenheit over the past century, Antarctica over all appears to have cooled slightly in the past few decades.
That has been puzzling, because the polar regions are thought to be more sensitive to warming trends than the rest of the globe. Even more puzzling, a small portion of Antarctica -- the peninsula that stretches north toward South America -- defies the cooling trend. It has been warming very rapidly, about five degrees over the past 50 years, 10 times the global average.
Writing in today's issue of the journal Science, Dr. David W. J. Thompson, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University, and Dr. Susan Solomon, a senior scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colo., argue that the ozone hole, which has opened up each spring over Antarctica in recent years, may help explain both contradictory trend.
''Ozone seems to be capable of tickling the Southern Hemisphere patterns,'' Dr. Thompson said in an interview.
A vortex of winds continually blows around Antarctica, tending to trap cold air at the South Pole. In the new paper, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Solomon show that the winds have strengthened in the past few decades, keeping the cold air even more confined.
The peninsula, which lies outside the wind vortex, escapes the cooling effect, the scientists said.
They say the ozone hole may be the cause of the stronger winds.
''That's where we speculate,'' Dr. Thompson said, ''and the emphasis is on the word 'may.' ''
Close to the ground, ozone, a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, forms a large and unhealthy component of smog. High in the atmosphere, however, naturally occurring ozone is essential for life, blocking ultraviolet rays that would fatally mangle DNA.
Artificial chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFC's, once ubiquitous in aerosol spray cans and air-conditioner coolant, cause a chain of reactions that destroy ozone. In September 2000, the ozone hole opened up to a record 17.1 million square miles. With the most damaging CFC's now phased out, the ozone hole is expected to heal over the coming decades.
Until it does, however, fewer ozone molecules mean the atmosphere absorbs less ultraviolet radiation. Instead of warming the air, the rays bounce off the snow and ice of Antarctica and reflect back into space.
Scientists already knew that the ozone hole had cooled the upper atmosphere. Dr. Thompson and Dr. Solomon show that the troposphere, the lowest six miles of the atmosphere, has also cooled.
''It's a lot of food for thought in there,'' said Dr. John E. Walsh, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Illinois and an author of a paper in Science in January that indicated Antarctica was cooling.
Dr. Walsh said the data tying the cooling to stronger winds was convincing. ''My one reservation,'' he said, ''is the link to the ozone.''
He noted that the ozone hole was usually largest in November or December, but that the greatest cooling had been about six months later.
Dr. Thompson agreed that the ozone hole could not explain the whole climactic picture, and said other influences like ocean currents probably played important roles, too.
''I seriously doubt it's the only player,'' he said. ''I think it's one of many.''

Wouldn't a better way to go about this be to suggest other ideas/solutions and fight the political gains some people are abusing this issue for?
