Anyone else in the Shark Pool not sold on Grossman? (1 Viewer)

just wanna say that I'm still not sold on Grossman, despite the gaudy numbers that he's put up the past couple of weeks

I think that Grossman had the benefit of playing two of the NFL's worst defenses in Green Bay and Detroit and I will wait to see him play against a real defense before naming him the 'steal of the year' or even and every week starter

what do you guys think: you sold on this guy or still pessimistic?

He's gone in all of my league's, the managers rushed out to pick him up this week. Are they getting themselves a 'steal' or will they be disappointed if they make him their starter?

He is not going to keep putting up these #'s. Defenses have been all about stopping the bears running game. Now they have to respect the pass, which will open up the run game. he is playing great right now. Don't expect 280 and 4tds everyweek. 220 and 1-2 tds is realistic.

 
I'm not sold that he'll continue to put up these huge numbers, but I am sold on him as a legit fantasy starter with a chance at top 5. Injury concerns aside, he's done an excellent job this year.

 
I was very impressed with Grossman's arm strength and accuracy on Sunday. He can thread the needle to a WR 20 yards down the field mainly due to his powerful arm. It's kind of funny, you look at Grossman, all 6'1 of him, kind of a chubby guy, and you don't expect much. But the guy has a cannon and he is poised beyond his years on the field(his offensive line allowing 1 sack in 2 games may have something to do with his confidence). Berrian/Moose/Clark all look much better than advertised. I think the Bears D will hurt his value a bit, and opposing d-cordinators will obviously start paying more attention to the Bears TE's and Berrian, but the guy has all the tools to put up 25 TD passes this season. The Minnesota game should give us all a better idea of Grossman's prospects for this season. I wouldn't start the guy at this point, unless Collins and Losman were my QB's, but it appears that the UofF finally produced a QB that has what it takes to be top-notch QB.

If I had Grossman instead of Bulger at this point, I would not hesitate to start Grossman until both of them proved that I should do otherwise.

I'm a Bears fan and own Grossman in one of the two leagues I participate in. Personally, I am sold he will be a decent fantasy QB this year. Not top ten, but decent. Maybe in that 15-18 range... good QB2. The Bears seem to be set on running the ball and letting Grossman throw deep (thats his strength it seems). Grossman will throw a good amount of INTs I believe, and his completion percentage doesn't seem likely to be great, but he should finish the year with solid yardage and TD totals. The big trick for him is staying healthy... and thats a risk, in my view.

What I like about him this year:

1. The Bears have an easy schedule this year and will play both GB and DET again.

2. The o-coordinator, during his first stint in CHI, had an offense with very respectable passing numbers.

3. Grossman has shown he can complete deep passes and the coaches seem fine with him airing it out quite a bit (deep passing is something that all together disappeared in CHI for quite a while). He isn't dinking and dunking a ton.

4. Grossman was very productive in college. He may not have the great measurables that you like out of your QB, but he seems to get the job done (when healthy).

5. If teams start really scheming for the passing game, I believe that the CHI running game will go wild for a couple of games and teams will start focusing on that once again... as that is truly the strength of the offense.

Obviously much of my reaonsing is speculation, but for me, it makes sense that Grossman will have a solid year if healthy. He definitely won't keep pace with what he's done thus far this year... but I think he could make a solid QB2 this year (and as a Bears fan, I sure hope so).

Grossman has always been for real. His problem is not talent but health! If he had been healthy last year, he wouldn't have snuck up on anyone right now. I would like to see him make it through the year but if he does, the numbers will be there.

 
i dont think most people say he's an every week starter. but i see him as a solid backup, or great in a QBBC - especially since everyone (who picked him up) got him for FREE

Didn't the Detroit defense hold Seattle to 9 points the week before :confused:

Well, 220 yards and 1.5 TDs per game is 3,520 yards and 24 TDs over 16 games. I could definitely live with that production for my back-up fantasy QB.Thinking of dropping Plummer for him. He could be the new Plummer; guy who puts up solid fantasy numbers largely as a result of defenses respecting his team's running game.
 
I've seen both Bears games this year - Grossman has been consistently making BEAUTIFUL throws. He's hitting his receivers in stride, putting the ball where they have a chance to make plays and the defense does not.

Will he throw for 4TDs every week? No.

Will the defenses he face get better? You bet.

Is he a worthwhile fantasy back-up/matchup starter? Sure thing.

The problem with this thinking is that by waiting, you will miss out. Dependant on who you have to drop to get him, why not take a flier now, before he faces a 'real defense' and lights it up, ensuring that everyone in your league will be after him.And as for Detroit not being a 'real defense', please enlighten me how this fake defense kept the defending NFC champs out of the endzone the week before...
 
Grossman was my deep sleeper QB last year before he got hurt. This morning, I dropped Leftwich for Grossman and hope I found a sleeper. I think he's worth a chance for those who do not have a good QB. If not, I didn't lose much.

I have McNair and Grossman :bag:

 
only reservations i have is that i'm sure the teams that have played chicago have game-planned against the run, seeing as chicago had a hard time completing a forward pass last season...so this may just be catching the first two opponents with their pants down.

other one is that the weather will eventually be #### in chicago, which i assume would limit the passing game. other than that, if you don't have to pay a king's ransom, why not take a chance. he could be the new erik kramer :o

So if we expand that line of thinking, then all Hasselbeck owners would be absolute fools not to drop him for Grossman. I understand that's what has happened the first two weeks, but I think you need to have a larger perspective than that. Grossman doubled his career TDs in one game. That is both testimony to the brilliance he showed on Sunday and also to how injured and ineffective he has been prior to these past two games.Don't pretend that he is anything more than a gamble at this point. I wouldn't cut more proven QBs to try to catch lightning in a bottle. Where it gets interesting is for people who have a QB who is already struggling, like a Culpepper. Grossman may appear to be an upgrade, but let's see what happens the next two weeks.

Bledsoe had 11 TDs in the first five weeks of 2005, then 14 TDs the final 11 weeks.

Peyton Manning had 2 TDs in the first three weeks of 2005, then 26 TDs the next 10 weeks.

Ridiculous example, as no one was dropping Peyton for Bledsoe (I hope) but the point still stands. Grossman could end up a top 10 QB this year, but there is no track record of sustained health or producition, and that means risk. Culpepper also is a health risk and a recent production decline, which is why he is an interesting comparison.

Why didn't you drop McNair?! He looks absolutely terrible this season and Leftwich has probably the best sked for QB's not to mention 3 young and talented WR. I think Leftwich will finally come into his own this season. He played pretty well against the SB champs yesterday. McNair looked terrible against a terrible Raider D that was missing it's #1 CB.

I think Leftwich will finally come into his own this season. He played pretty well against the SB champs yesterday. McNair looked terrible against a terrible Raider D that was missing it's #1 CB.

I don't think McNair has had the opportunity to really get into a grove since the Baltimore D has dominated the game. Plus, we have a short bench so Simms, Plummer, Leftwich, Carr etc are available. If this is wrong, I should have other options.

As of this writing, there are a few FBGs who have some 'splainin' to do about their projections... ;)

now that Brooks is hurt, we'll never really know what he could have done over the course of a full season, had he not been struck by injury at such an unfortunate time for OaklandI admit that he was terrible in Week 1, but again, that's only 1 week. Who knows whether or not he would have been able to turn things around

What are you talking about??? Rex made alot of mistakes against the Vikes, but he stood up after a bad interception, came back and won the game. Yeah, that's what bad QB's do. It's his freakin' 10th game in the NFL, he still has alot to learn, but he's doing pretty damn good so far.I am not a Grossman owner.

He got exposed in Minnesota. He made downright awful decisions when he was pressured. It was the first time this season he had hands and bodies consistantly in his face, and you can bet your biscuits it won't be the last. He had one or two decent drives, and made one good throw on blown coverage to win the game.He's certainly better than Orton was last year, and he's got a great arm, but I'm not sold on the kid yet.

Hummm, what other QBs make poor decisions when pressure is consistently getting to their body and face? Maybe every QB in the NFL.....

his atrocious interception in the endzone almost got me thrown out of the bar i watching the game at (i was up against an owner who had the lousy minn defense).i think grossman will be so-so...once teams start actually game-planning him a bit, the bears fix their run game, and the weather sets in, he'll calm down quite a bit and settle into a 210-1.5 TD per game that we would expect from a chicago QB.

Pardon bumping up another Grossman thread, but thought this one had better info/discussion going.

Grossman continues to make those of us keeping him on the bench pay. No I don't expect the TD pace to continue either, but he has done really well vs a variety of Ds (granted no amazing ones - glad he doesn't have to play his own D). I sat him for POS Bledsoe (Owens is back, etc etc). No more.

Grossman's not injury prone. He had two different injuries on two entirely different parts of his body.If you had a 300 pound man roll over your ankle, and it broke, would that make YOU injury prone? If that 300 pound man rolled over Favre's ankle, it would have broken, too. Would that mean that FAVRE was injury prone?Grossman hasn't been injury prone to this point in his career, he's just been unlucky.
 
200 and 2 tds is a good benchmark he will reach way more time than not. A 3/4 td day is not going to happen much. he is my backup behind Mcnabb and I'm thrilled.

 
There have been two knocks on Grossman:

1) His injuries: In my mind this is not a reflection of his talent.

2) He was a QB at Florida: It's worth noting that the scouting reports and his combine results were good enough to warrant a 1st round draft selection. Most UF QBs have been 2nd day picks. Grossman came out at the height of Spurrier's success and was painted with the brush of failed UF QBs in the NFL so it must have been Spurrier's system not his talent. Redskins and Gamecock's have proven that to no longer be accurate.

IMO Grossman is a leader and a talented QB who will draw comparisons for the next 10 years to Brett Favre.

 
Two things I'm really worried about with Grossman.

1. Weather - Chi is always a defense/running team for a reason.

2. Playoffs - the way they're playing, they could have the North locked up and be starting their backups in the fantasy playoff weeks of 15 and 16.

Other than that, it looks like all systems go for Rex. Too bad I had to trade him away for a RB upgrade... he looks good.

I don't truely think we will ever know if he's for real this season, they don't play ANYBODY that is any good the rest of the year...

By the end of the year the schedule will be fine. Giants/Pats/Seattle? Not a complete grind, but who else do you expect?

300 pound guy didn't hurt his ankle. In 2005, well wait lemme paste this:Grossman was hurt with 11:08 to go in the first half on a 4-yard completion to Darnell Sanders. He was flushed from the pocket by Jeremy Loyd and Trev Faulk and spun and dropped by Faulk, initially getting back to his feet after the hit.But then, limping, Grossman signaled for a trainer. He sat down and grabbed his left knee in pain, slamming his helmet on the cart before being taken off the field. Grossman knew immediately it was a serious injury after feeling something pop in his ankle.
Grossman hasn't been injury prone to this point in his career, he's just been unlucky.

Let me complete that sentence for you.If every season had ended with an injury, Grossman wouldn't have been playing in week 17 of 2003. Guess what- Rex Grossman was playing in week 17 of 2003, after making it through the season uninjured.

He left that game with a broken finger
 
Luckily an "injury-prone" QB isn't a huge worry compared to other NFL positions, well other than K and P. If he can make it through this season, I think the label will begin to fade.
