AOC Boycotting the State of the Union (1 Viewer)

She will be missed......by absolutely no one. 😂

So millennial of her to tantrum for not getting her way.

conservatives talk about AOC waaaaay more than liberals do.  It's really weird to me how much space a freshman representative takes up in y'alls heads.

I'm likely in the minority but my take would be you always attend. This isn't about Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I'd say the same for anyone.

This is about doing your job.

And part of your job is you show up for work. Even when it's not going your way. And even when "work" is just sitting there.

This is different than declining an offer to visit the Whitehouse as a guest. This is your job.

I'm not sure how commonplace deciding not to show for the State Of The Union is. But it feels like a lame move to me.
she didn’t swear an oath to attend the SOTU

So in Germany, let's say 1941.  It's your duty?  I know this is extreme and our President isn't on the level but he might be the most radical since then with his rhetoric for a superpower nation.

Yeah. Until people find out what's actually in it.

IDEO: Students all about Ocasio-Cortez's 'Green New Deal'...then find out what's in it

First, asking their original perception of the plan, students made clear that they were on board.

However, after walking through the contents of the Green New Deal, their tune quickly shifted.
It holds up when you walk people through the contents as well! https://www.dataforprogress.org/gnd-support#gnd:state:overall

Pelosi offered to stake Trump’s hand and he refused.   Time and time again this man shows he’s not worthy of respect.  AOC made the right call.
I’m sure he doesn’t give a crap what she does, nor does he need or want her respect.  She is a nobody and a wannabe.

Character is not about how one treats their friends or those who can do things for you.  Character is about how one treats strangers, the unfortunate, and yes even adversaries if not most especially adversaries.

Amen brother!

Strangers, yes.  The unfortunate, absolutely. People that lie to you and call you dumb? There is a point that being respectful is no longer appropriate.  You shouldn’t always be nice to the school bully.

I come from the school of thought that one can be respectful of their enemies even while stomping a mud hole in them.  YMMV

.....and how he is treated?  Hell, I believe he should be worse to some.  Namely the main stream media, the impeachment squad, and of course “the squad”.

I have no problem with Trump not shaking the hand of the person that unfairly tried to impeach him.

Seems kind of captain obvious to me.

She should have went and watch him say his mediocre 2.3% GDP growth is the envy of the world. Or how he has added a couple trillion to our national debt that he was going to eliminate in 8 years. She could have put in ear plugs and with her long hair no one would have noticed.

You can find thousands of AOC stories in every media outlet be it liberal or conservative.  I am not sure why the constant denial.  She became a rock star mostly by massive coverage from the left and still gets massive attention from them.  The right is just more likely to report on the dumb stuff she says or does which is also quite frequent.

AOC raises way more money than any other House Democrat.

AOC is connected at the hip with Bernie Sanders.

AOC tweets get covered on a weekly basis by all major media.

Netflix pays $10 million for her documentary.

She is not the most powerful, but AOC is easily the most influential member of the House

But yet it is the conservatives who talk about her waaaaaaaay more?  Right.  🤣

If this were a regular business she, and probably dozens of others, could sue him for harassment and win.
He wouldn't even have a job in most companies in America.

 breaking tradition.
So that is a "no".

If somebody wants to mew about class or tradition, you cant wipe your butt on those things.

The "broken-list" by the American right-wing is massive. If lefties want to complain about her that's okay.

Most liberals find her to be an incredibly minor player.
I have no idea how you define liberals, but she is clearly the heir to Bernie's torch to the socialist wing of the party.  She constantly is throwing out red meat to them and they eat it up.  As a minor player, she lead the call for a New Green Deal, which every major Democratic Presidential candidate ran on with some variation.  She was the key to Bernie breaking from the pack and becoming Biden's only real challenger.    She is easily one of the top 5 Democratic figures, trailing only Biden, Pelosi, and Bernie.  Minor?  Not even close.

It's probably a good thing she didn't go.  Other squad members had a poor showing just being there.  They can't control themselves.

LOL, Bernie himself says otherwise....

She’s the darling of the far left … and of Bernie Sanders.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has a “very, very important role” waiting for her in the White House should fellow Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders win his party’s nomination and then defeat President Donald Trump in 2020, the Vermont senator said.

“Her ideas are resonating all over this country,” Sanders told ABC News of the Bronx-Queens freshman congresswoman in a joint interview on Sunday. “If I am in the White House, she will play a very, very important role. No question.”

Pffffft... that guy didnt start a thread.

LOL...exactly.   And thread starter is digging in his heels.  I am not sure why so many people have such a hard time admitting the obvious.   I can't imagine someone getting nuked so badly, but yet still act like he is winning.

I find this denial of AOC to be one of the more fascinating things.

It is just so weird in the face of measurable data that conclusively proves otherwise.

Oh well, apparently the mods thought a thread called "Could Donald Trump do your job?" was too inflammatory so the thread has been axed.  I really have no idea what rule it violated but not a huge deal I guess.  For what it's worth, at the time it was deleted the vote was something like 22 no votes, 1 yes vote, and 1 unsure.

You think this is a minority  position?
Not sure. It seems like she has a lot of support for skipping.  My guess it it would split mostly along party lines.

But I don't really know. And my position or whether it's minority or majority doesn't matter really.

I do think I'm a little weird on stuff like that though. I can't stand it when people are disrespectful to a speaker. I hated the Republicans reading a book during the impeachment. I hate when people talk when there's a speaker speaking to a crowd. Just a quirk of mine. There's something related here I think. If you're part of a group or team, you show up when the group gathers and you give the meeting your attention. You don't just stay home because you're upset with the boss.

There's something in there about the team being bigger than the leader I think. But I don't really know. It's one of those things where I'm trying to figure out why I think what I think.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) announced Tuesday that she will be among a group of at least nine Democrats who are boycotting President Trump's State of the Union address.

Why it matters: The decision to boycott the address after attending last year reflects the cognitive dissonance felt by some Democrats about granting Trump a state ceremony after having accused him of being a threat to the Constitution and national security.

Other Democratic members of Congress who are boycotting for the first time include:

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas)

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.)

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.)

House Financial Services Chair Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.)

House Homeland Security Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.)

Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) will also skip the State of the Union for the third year in a row.
