Apple (AAPL) : Tim Cook announces iForum. Dodds and Bryant prepare shut down operations (1 Viewer)

I'm utterly shocked there's nobody here touting they sold at $705. What's happening to FBGs?

Engadget

For the the company's recently ended quarter, Mac sales totaled 4.1 million -- that's in stark contrast to the 5.2 million sold in the previous year-ago quarter. This startling nugget comes despite the fact that Apple issued a refreshed iMac just before the close of the holiday season -- normally a boon time for sales.
There's still nothing close to the iPod out on the market IMO. My wife asked me to research those kinds of gadgets as she wanted to buy me one for Christmas...there's NOTHING CLOSE to an iPod Touch.
How is the ipod touch any better than one of these?http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop/cell-phones/htc-one-v-phone/features/I picked one of these up for $50 brand new over the holidays. I listen to a ton of podcasts so it's nice to have an mp3 player that can download directly to the device rather than the need to transfer files from a computer to the device. I think they've hit that $50 price point two more times since then.
That's a phone. I wasn't looking for a phone.

Apple was priced for perfection.
- P/E Ratio of 11.- Sell some of the highest-quality and 'coolest' gadgets on Earth, in a market that's growing astronomically.- Enough cash sitting in the bank to just outright BUY companies like 3M, Altria, or Caterpillar.- 2% dividend. This has to do with expectations and momentum, not value. Apple is a screaming buy as a cash cow value investment. You just don't want to get caught holding when they disappoint on earnings.
What are they going to do with all that cash? Raise the dividend?

I hope it drops to 300. Maybe we can get a good sex scandal or something scurrilous to drive the price down even farther. I'll buy a tonload. For now I'll ride my shares. It will be a cash cow for years to come.

But if you simply don't activate it... how does it function any different than an ipod touch?

They made almost as much in one quarter as google or microsoft does an entire year.Of course the expectations were ridiculous last year and it was pumped up way too high, but at this level there isn't much downside. That doesn't mean it can't go lower, but they aren't falling off a cliff anytime soon.Apple has double the market cap of goog or Microsoft, but they make 3x's as much money and have a lot in the bank.

137B in cash on hand. That's crazy.
Yup. Take a look at how much debt the average company has; typically about 2/3 equity and 1/3 debt. Apple has no debt. The cash on hand is equivalent to $150 a share. Some big hedge funds are going to make some big money on Apple, while the skittish investors, as usual, will get fleeced.

sure is. way too much, bad management of cash on hands. They should return it to their investors.
They are starting too, but they'd have to crank it up to like a 10% yield in order to even start chipping away at their current stock pile.
then they should make appropriate acquisitions. having that much cash on hand is dumb.

Buy iPods.

Diworsification? :XMuch better off with upping the dividend if they choose to divest themselves of cash.

So what's the play here? Do we just short this puppy into the ground? Does Tim Cook starting making calls asking if there's any TARP money left over?
Just wait for Siff's PI & ToG to say "bull". Til then, sit tight.
Exactly. Logical, practical and unemotional. Based on the fact of price action in there here and now.Apple is a perfect example of a "what to buy"...we just have to wait on the "when" in order to buy it.

maybe that's why it costs 10x as much as the competitors?
How much are you paying for your ipods?

I don't know...again, I wasn't looking at phones.ETA: Looking at the spec sheet, I'd have to add a 32G chip to this phone, the screen is smaller and the processor is slower. Not really sure where you're going with this. I can go get a cassette tape player for real cheap too, doesn't mean I should be comparing it with the iPod because they both play music.

Right...my wife got me the 5g one, 32G for $250. Not sure where she got it though....everywhere I saw, they were $299.

???I'm not sure why you are desperately trying to make the distinction between a phone and an mp3 player. So the One V has the ability to be a phone if you choose, but it's certainly not a feature you have to use. I'll take a $50 One V + $20 microSD card(that I can use in all my future "mp3 players") any day of the week. I can assure you that any 1GHz processor is plenty fast to play music. If you choose to stick your head in the sand and claim, "there's NOTHING CLOSE to an iPod Touch" that's fine. I'm sure the "ecosystem" is worth at least $200, maybe $250 or more all by itself.

:lmao: You are really barking up the wrong tree here. You can continue to say a bunch of things that I didn't and attribute them to me to attack all you want. My comments stand. There's not another device of it's type out there close to the iPod. If you want to bring phones into the mix, go for it....have a party. I compared the iPod to that phone and noted the screen was smaller, the memory was significantly less and the processor was slower. I made no argument one way or the other that what was in the phone you listed was sufficient for playing mp3s. I simply pointed out the differences. Go pick slapfights with the fanboys if that's your thing. Keep me out of it. FWIW...a quality mem card for that thing appears to be between $40 - $50 for 32G.

AAPL trading at 450 has wiped out every dollar coming into ETFs 3 times over this year. This is really going to sting some people that don't even hold the base shares. The volume on open was 11Million. That money is going all over the place and somehow the broad market isn't selling off. Amazing.I can tell you what they could do with all that cash. Stock buyback.

Having no debt with a big cash stockpile they can't figure out how to invest isn't really a good thing. It doesn't sound like a company that is expanding. It doesn't sound like a company with a pipeline of new ideas.

I was holding 100 shares, hoping there'd be another split in the near future.....I'm not holding my breath any longer.

Yeah, people keep saying things like this, along with increasing the dividends, but I don't think they realize what it really means.

You guys hammer Apple for holding a stockpile of cash, then turn around and hammer Amazon for investing heavily in their future because it causes their PE ratio to look terrible

I looked at this actually. For the price and 32G the iPod was actually cheaper. When I priced them, it was $220 for 8G. The sim card was another $45 to get it to 32G. The iPod has a nicer camera, smaller screen, faster processor for $16 cheaper.

Fun, but useless facts:In Netflix dollars Apple shares would be priced at $8,100 apieceIn Amazon dollars Apple shares would be priced at $149,000 apiece

A friend of mine who lives in silicon valley saw Tim Cook having dinner with his boy toy. (not kidding)

Which generations of each were you comparing? ipod 4th gen vs Galaxy Player went to the galaxy in my opinion. The newest ipods look like crap but do have better specs. Then again I don't know if Samsung has refreshed the line recently or not.I would have to look up the specs but I am pretty sure the Galaxy had a faster processor, 3mp vs sub 1mp camerae, GPS, and supported way more audio and vidoe formats such as flac and ogg. The only thing I recall the ipod having a step up on the Galaxy was the resolution which on a small screen is not a deal breaker. Then as you mention expanding MicroSD.

It was the new iPod. 5g?? Curious what you mean about the looks? Mine's a black iPod that's very plane. I personally don't care what the stuff looks like as long as it does what I need it to. This thing looks like an iPhone only thinner.

The two tone design. White face sides and back colored. I do recall the black looking a little better. I also did not like the cheesy strap and pop up button on the back. So your telling me you wouldn't have waited or went somewhere else to get the black one? You would have just grabbed the pink or lime? The Galaxy would have served you better in playing all music formats and videos. So I think the fact that it was the Apple design also pulled you in not just being able to be the most capable device.
