Are you a Costco member? What do you buy for your household? (4 Viewers)

We are currently Sam's Club members. Anyone had both that could give us the pros to each? Our Sams has what we need but we have friends that absolutely love Costco but never had Sams.

Been to both. Costco seems cleaner, neater and better organized.  The employees are much better and go out of their way to help, at Sams it seems they went out of their way to not to help.

Costco has better/higher end items (more organic/prime meat/nicer electronics/etc) in my experience with both.  This could vary by location.

I am still a Sams member though I have only set foot in one a couple times the last several years.  Costco is a Saturday ritual.

Costco's peripheral services (travel packages, return policy, etc) have been a better experience as well.

I like it. Use it for cooking sous vide. I bought a big package of pork chops on rebate today from Costco and was planning on sealing them with some salt, butter, and rosemary and throwing them in the freezer to be able to pull directly from the freezer and drop in the water bath. For anything that doesn't have liquid it's great. For anything that has liquid it sucks.

I really want a chamber vacuum sealer but don't have an extra 800 bucks I'm willing to spend on one just so I can vacuum seal something with liquid.
I love my vp215

I've pretty much quit shopping  @ my local grocery store since I joined Costco 5 months ago. I get about 85% of my groceries from Costco. Love the produce and meats. I also save a good bit on Gatorade.

Perfect timing.  I keep pondering the purchase of one of these, for I feel like we end up with a lot of wasted food suffering from freezer burn.

Any thoughts on the foodsaver??
It's great, though I don't use mine as much as I used to. One thing I do use it for (and makes it certainly worth having) is for steaks. Go buy a whole ribeye from Sam's, have them cut it into steaks, then vac seal all the individual steaks at home. That process can take 30-45 minutes, but it's worth it to me. Having 12 or so delicious steaks in the freezer to grab whenever I need on a weeknight is great (often saving a trip to the store). They thaw pretty quickly. Choice ribeye for about $8/lb is fantastic. It's rarely less than $13/lb at the local Kroger.

The return policy alone make it worthwhile.  I bought some sun dried tomatoes for 18.00.   First time I used them did not like the flavor at all.  Since I go there once a week I just kept them in the fridge and took them back.  They asked if anything was wrong..I said no I just don't like them....OK refund of 18.00.

One of my daughters friend is a manger at a Costco and I was asking her about the return policy..she said none of it comes out of the Costco account but they force the companies who made the product to credit them.  Because their high volume purchasing makes nice profits if your products are in Costco they are more than happy to do so.

Also any kind of birthday or graduation cakes are a steal at Costco.

don't think ive seen that picked rotisserie chicken before. im going today will have to take another look
that stuff is really handy.  quick dinners. I also add it to those bags of salads they have like the asian salad. use those for lunches all week.

Their deli makes a delicious bolognese ravioli lasagna (think lasagna but with large ravioli instead of large flat pasta) for $16-ish I think. We'll eat a quarter of it one night for dinner and pack the rest into small lunch containers. Crazy good deal at $16.

That is good.  We also like the stuffed peppers in that section.

Middle Class Trap...once you enter there is no getting out until you stand in a long line of people with mini-SuV size carts and sometimes 2 of them, eager to part with 300-500 bucks all in the name of saving 50 cents on a 4-pack of Barilla Pasta Sauce, oof!

Costco might be slightly more economical on certain items but many are not really saving folks money but instead are convenient for one stop shopping.

Their pay plans for employees are similar in a lot of ways to Whole Foods which is passed on to the consumers and you know how overpriced they can be, right? Costco is no fairy tale but rather suburban hell for the masses.

I'm MoP and that's how it works in My World.

Just bought a pack of 3 ribeyes as big as my face and 2 inches thick, for 42 bucks. More than enough for 6 meals for my wife and me. Their meat is awesome.

Just joined a week ago. The closest one is about an hour away but they just approved one to be built about two miles from me. Love that place and look forward to getting my next TV from there!

Haven't been in Costco in almost a year.

But my $800 rebate check is on the way. So I'll be pissing off a bunch of people when I cash it.

Why you have to go to a normal register is beyond stupid

I always cash it at the customer service counter.

You go for the damn footlong Hebrew National Hotdog and drink for a 1.50.......if there's anything else that you want to buy....that's just gravy on the mashed potatoes, Tuna Man......

Is there some type of rebate by being a Costco member? My wife told she heard something about it but I didn't think anything about it. Could it be true?

That's odd. Ours is substantially cheaper for everything from clothes to furniture to electronics to jewelry to alcohol to toilet paper. The lines aren't bad either. Maybe you're comparing prices of supermarket sized items to the larger sizes they sell at Costco, or Florida is some weird place where Costcos are more expensive. I know a lot of really crazy people live there so maybe that's it.

CNBC did a profile of their business model which was really interesting. All of their products go through rigorous testing/comparisons to other brands and they are ruthless with their price negotiations. For the holiday shopping season they rented out a big conference center for all the toy manufacturers to show their stuff. The Costco buyers put them through rigorous evaluations and demanded changes if something wasn't quite right. Then they were showing how their toilet paper was put through all kinds of quality control testing. Another neat thing is that the founder decreed that the hot dog & soda deal would always remain $1.50, and those dogs are enormous. Just a little thing he wanted to do for his customers but it speaks volumes imo.

In my experience every Kirkland brand product has been as good or better than competing national brands, and they're cheaper. As if all of this isn't enough, their employee satisfaction & retention is always among the top percentile in all of retail.

In the summer our Costco has a little temporary garden center outside.  6' Leland cypress trees are $60, about a third of the price of any place I've seen around here.

If it's a middle class trap, they've got me and I'm not complaining.

You'll love Costco but if you are gonna be 2 miles away get ready for the increased traffic near / around your house.

I get what you are saying, but just like everything else, you have to be smart about it.  Yeah, I am not saving on my 5lb drum of Jelly Belly's because I wasn't going out to buy those.  Then it's just a waste of money if you aren't getting #### you probably would have been getting before, so yeah, you have to curb the impulse buying a bit when you just see something and think "ooh, that's cheaper/lb".

However, we more than cover the cost of the membership on their bottled water alone (I know, but we have to).   I have come to learn what is cheaper for us there - milk, water, bread, some fruit, coffee, booze, allergy meds, etc.. and go in there for that and hit the Woodman's across the street for other stuff.

If you spend an extra $55 and upgrade to the executive membership, you get a 2% rebate at the end of every year. For us it's the biggest no brainer in the history of earth. Then you get an additional 2% back on the Costco Visa if you've got that too.
What is that, 2500.00 to get your 55.00 back?

The sausage, peppers and onion is really good!! I think it may be more than $1, but not that much and it's still cheap!!

The only minor annoyance with the rebate is the fact that gas purchases don't qualify for the $2750.
Yeah, but you get 4% back through the Visa for gas, so it's pretty much the same as 2% through the Visa and 2% through the executive membership
Interesting. We only have an AMEX card in addition to the couple debit cards we have from a couple bank accounts. We do all of our purchases on that unless the vendor doesn't allow AMEX. I might have to look into the Costco Visa, I was disappointed when they switched last year.

Random question: How do you get all of the replies nested?
If you highlight the stuff that you want to quote, and hold your pointer over the highlighted area, you get a black box that says Quote This. Click there and it copies the highlighted stuff in the response area. You can do it with more than one set of responses, but you have do do each one separately. The Quote This immediately puts your quote in the response area, you can't combine it with others for the multiple quote.

HTH!!

2 questions. How are you getting a big rebate check when you haven't shopped there in a year? Does Costco not cap the yearly 2% rebate? (Sam's caps it at $500/year).

I have the Costco Visa, used to be Amex.

I don't pay for the executive membership because I don't shop there that often. I get plenty of ℅ back for all my purchases

If you're in the market for a nightstand safe Costco has one called sentrysafe. I got it on sale for 100 bucks. Biometric, push code and key opening. I've yet to have a failure using the biometric pad. I have a different biometric safe from amazon that sucks. It opens about 80% of the time. Not acceptable.

Maybe this isn't the right thread for this, but for those interested in comparing...here's a link to sign up for a Sam's Club membership.  $45 for the year and you get a $25 gift card, a free large pizza and 18 pack of cookies

I have both. I'd say the Costco is worth 3-4x more than Sams
