Curious about install.

How long are the bolts to install?

I learned the hard way that I have 3 sheets of 5/8 sheet rock on my garage ceiling
just noticed theres a installation video on the pagelooks to be a simple 1 man 2 hour install

http://www.costco.com/.product.100006897.html?utm_campaign=bazaarvoice&utm_medium=SearchVoice&utm_source=RatingsAndReviews&utm_content=Default#BVRRWidgetID
Read the install pdf. Cones with 3 inch lag. Recommended 2 inches minimal into the stud. I physically can't do that. 1.5 inch sheet rock plus 2 in lag is 3.5 inch.

I'll need 4 inch lags.

Their Kirkland brand booze and wine is great. Has anyone tried their beer?
It's absolutely horrible.
:lmao: I think I had a 48 pack in my garage fridge for over 6 months. Reluctantly, people would drink one or two of them when they ran out of their beer.

It's somewhere b/w Natty Light and the Beast
I haven't had the Kirkland brand beer, but the private label beers from Trader Joes are really quite good.

Do you think the fact that Sam's is now advertising the fact that they now are tied to Amex is the signal of the end of Amex at Costco?

I know I was among the group that felt "oh, they can work it out," but that looks like the end.

Amex is done with Costco. They signed a deal with VISA and Citi (I think).

Yeah, but some of us felt that it was a ruse and Costco and Amex would work it out.

When can we start using visa at Costco?

These exclusive CC deals are stupid, btw.
April 2016, ballpark.

No ruse.

Amex didn't want to give the terms Costco wanted. Costco found good terms with Visa and Citi as new partners. Costco gets favorable treatment on their merchant services and branded card. I am happy because I was very close to getting the Costco Amex pretty much exclusively for Costco. Now, I have no reason to do that.

Only reason I have amex. And only 2 years ago

Yes. Once the Costco/amex relationship ends, I will cancel my Amex. Never liked them anyway.

Are those garage storage racks a good deal? I haven't priced them out and am currently too lazy to do so.
yes, when on sale. I have three. THey are solid, spacious and out of the way. Only thing is, you need a ladder nearby to make use of them and they're so stout, you need to be careful not to overload them or its too much trouble to get stuff back down.
easy to install?
I paid a handyman guy $75 to install it. Took him about 2 hrs but he is pretty quick and is a professional carpenter.

PSA: Victorias marinara on sale this month at least at my costco. Best jar sauce I've ever had. 6 bucks for 2 big jars is an absolute steal. Stock up.
bump

just tried this out and totally agree.. went back the next day and stocked up. 10 item limit for the sale

I don't think it's that bad. I have it as being a notch below Bud Light.

Why would you - as a customer - not like the credit card that gives you the best rewards?

I'd prefer Citi for their virtual card service and the citipass concert presales. But thought the deal is with Capital One.

Edit: just searched and see you are correct. Deal announced in March. Capital One has the Canada Costco business. I'd love it if it allows using the virtual card service for an alternative to paypal.

Dog and Cat food. The savings from those two things along off buying them at local grocery story or Wal mart pays for the annual membership fee a few times over. Now with a newborn, diapers and such. Also, amazingly their beef isn't that bad.

anyone get a Christmas tree from Costco?

I saw 7' trees for $35

we usually go to a tree farm and cut ours down but this year they jacked the prices so I will not be returning

Never got one from Costco, but Home Depot has freaking great deals on trees. We used to go the tree farm route, but the tree was like $90. Same tree at Home Depot around $40 for an 8 footer. Nice Fraser Fir.

Picked up an 8' Fraser Fir at Costco for $29 + tax.

A couple years back we got one. And immediately returned it.

We were told we had to pay first, then take the voucher to where the trees were around the side of the store. We do so. It turns out we are handed a tree from the back of a truck, all wrapped tight in netting. We are told we are unable to choose our tree or even check out the one we are handed.

Since a big part of our xmas tree family tradition involves the choosing, we took the voucher back inside for a refund.

Not sure if that is how Costco still does it, or if it varies by location at all.

Got ours from Costco the past 2 years. Quality has been comparable to Home Depot or local parking lot. Obviously it will vary by location, but we got to pick the tree we wanted out of ~10 they had pulled from the truck. They were in loose netting.

If you want an average to above average 7 to 8 foot Frasier, go to Costco and slip the guy $5 for what he thinks is the best tree. You will need to do your own trimming of the base, but you'll save 10 to 40 bucks over other places. If you want something different or enjoy the picking of the tree, go somewhere else and pay more.

They've started putting out a baby broccoli rab (raw) salad where they put all all the other cold prepared foods like the sandwich platters.  If you're looking for something healthy and delicious, this thing rules.  Besides the broccoli, it has craisins, pine nuts, red onions, a little crumbled bacon and a yogurt dressing.

We finally have a Costco opening up here locally on August 10. I've been waiting for this for awhile. Can't wait to hit the meat and seafood depts. After reading this thread and all of the suggestions I may need $1000 going in. I want damn near everything mentioned.

One question though. I see on the Costco website that the membership is gonna be $55. Do they offer any kind of discount on this when opening up a new store? Any other discount or promotions I should be aware of?

The open on 8/10 and starting 8/12 I'm off for 12 days. Will definitely be making my way over. I'm in a birthday club @ work and with my B-day on 8/15 it's gonna be my turn to get my $400.  Costco here I come.

Moving to Virginia from Japan (lived here 4 years) and have already scoped out the closest Costco.  So excited to be close to a Costco again... :excited:

We've been Costco members for about 5 years now. A year ago, Sams was essentially givung away free memberships through Groupon or some such. We signed up. It had been a few years since we were at Sams but man, night and day difference. The employees were sparce, almost a rarity to see one. And when you did, they had the "I hate my life" look about them. The service sucks, products are so-so and checkout a 20 minute long-line nightmare.

Needless to say we're never going back to Sams even if they hand out free memberships. Costco blows them away in every conceivable way.

If you're in the market for a new credit card, Citi has partnered with Costco. No fee for the card and you can get 2% back on everything you spend at Costco. So if you have an Executive account, that's an additional 2%. Pretty sweet.

Sure. They don't have a ton of stuff. They're not a specialty grocer. But if you want basics like lettuce, carrots, peas, bell peppers, kale, asparagus, cucumber, broccoli, brussels sprouts, celery, carrots, cauliflower along with whatever is seasonal and localish (we have been loving costco blueberries this summer), it's awesome and really inexpensive.

The plums this year have been amazing.  And nectarines.  It's also super cheap to buy squash there to make into squash spaghetti with a spiralizer

Doubt they will offer discounted memberships, but be on alert for special store-opening deals.

Ongoing... my local store sends out a coupon/discount book about once a month of the new deals available at the store and through the website.

If you plan on spending that much, just get the execute membership and the 2% back will pay for itself and then some

I have gotten a couple of decent travel packages via their travel website, which is certainly run by a third party, but they are the nicest folks ever on the phone and in no hurry to sell you anything and will review itineraries with you and details etc without worry about time on call.  Different discounts than you can get on the direct websites from what I have seen so far too.

Not Costco, but the poor man's Costco. I've cut out a huge food supplier (Performance/IFH) by relying more and more on Sam's. Performance is the 3rd biggest restaurant food supplier in the country (2nd if Sysco and US Foods have or still will merge), but every damn time I'd buy beef or pork from them, I'd be in Sam's the next day and see it'd be $0.15 cheaper. Same story with a lot of products. And Performance kept trying to dump off expired products on me, screwing up orders, etc. Sam's can't replace it all, but paired with another local supplier, it can. Of course, our small size means Sam's isn't inconvenient and we really have no bargaining power with major suppliers.

When in doubt these club stores (and I'm sure Costco is even better), are going have quality stuff at a damn good price. Small businesses have a lot working against them these days, but the club stores really help.
